Fishuary 2024: Day 19 - Arctic ocean @fish-daily
The mysteriously named fish doctor (Gymnelus viridis)--from what I've found it is also known as a type of eelpout, a term which similarly explains nothing to me.

Fishuary 2024 - Day 17: Tropical fish @fish-daily
A black variant common molly (Poecilia sphenops). The images I referenced were those of a male, as you can see with the modified anal fin. As with other livebearers, it uses its gonopodium for internal fertilisation.

Fishuary 2024: Day 16 - Freshwater fish @fish-daily
The tawilis (Sardinella tawilis) is a species endemic to Lake Taal in the Philippines, and the only entirely freshwater species of sardine. It came to be when the Taal volcano erupted and sealed off the lake from the sea in the 18th century, after which it adapted to a fully freshwater environment.
Though its life history interests me, it was very difficult to find images or footage of this little fish where it wasn't dead or dying. I hope that conservation efforts are succesful and that it continues to exist in spite all that stands against it.
Though it is a traditional food of the Philippines, in recent years it has been threatened by overfishing, pollution, predation by introduced species and of course, volcanic eruptions.

Fishuary 2024: Day 15 - Aquarium fish @fish-daily
The red parrot cichlid is a type of fish that can only exist in an aquarium because it is a hybrid of different species of cichlids. Its existence is controversial, to say the least.
One of my first memories of using a computer was the interactive screensaver MOPy fish, which happened to feature a red parrot cichlid. It is so old that it doesn't run on current versions of Windows.

Fishuary 2024: Day 13 - Big fish @fish-daily
I'm often trying to find obscure or lesser known examples but there was no way I'd choose anyone but a whale shark (Rhincodon typus) for the big fish prompt.

Fishuary 2024: Day 12 - Small fish @fish-daily
How much smaller can you get than a guppy (Poecilia reticulata) fry? Today I found out it was named after one of it's discoverers' surnames. I never wondered why. I just thought that it made sense for an animal that looked like that.

Fishuary 2024 - Day 11: Deep sea fish @fish-daily
The Antarctic toothfish (Dissostichus mawsoni) is a keystone species of the southern and Antarctic seas, currently at risk of overfishing. Its growth rate is slow--it can live for almost 50 years and matures at between 13 to 17 years, and even then does not reproduce every year.

Fishuary 2024: Day 10 - Symbiotic relationship @fish-daily
For this one I chose a bluestreak cleaner wrasse (Labroides dimidiatus) and a roving coral grouper (Plectropomus pessuliferus). They're hanging out.
I keep telling myself that if I continue making one or two fishes a day I might catch up and do all of Fishuary. At this point it's still possible, just a matter of willpower and pacing!

Fishuary 2024 - Day 9: Ray @fish-daily
The giant electric ray (Narcine entemedor) or Cortez electric ray is a species of numbfish that, as its name suggests, is capable of giving electric shocks.
At first I was meaning to draw the lesser electric ray (Narcine bancroftii) until I realised that the pictures I was using for reference looked more like the giant electric ray. Then I went to Wikipedia and saw that it was possible that they might be the same species. So technically this is a drawing of both!

Fishuay 2024 - Day 6: Catfish @fish-daily
The glass catfish (Kryptopterus vitreolus) is a small, transparent catfish endemic to Thailand, though nowadays it can be found in the aquarium trade. Most of its organs are located close to its head and it must be kept in schools to remain healthy.

Fishuary 2024 - Day 5: Triggerfish @fish-daily
Catching up with Fishuary by drawing an ocean triggerfish (Canthidermis sufflamen)!
There's so much variation within the species that at first I thought I had confused them, but looking at more pictures there really are so many ways an ocean triggerfish can look like.
