Rain tapped against the classroom windows, lulling Nene into a light sleep.
Just as she closed her heavy eyes, a soft voice called her awake once more,
“Yashiro-san?”
Humming in response, Nene raises her head from her crossed arms to look up at one of her classmates.
Blinking in surprise, it was the girl that sat in front of her, Tanaka Yuki. She was a part of the student council and intelligent.
“I…” Yuki trails off, tugging her soft black hair. Her brown eyes looked at Nene with concern, “I just wanted to see if you’re okay,”
Nene nods her head slowly.
Yuki nodded to herself, “Good. Good. As our class rep. — and a part of the student council, I have to make sure my peers are at optimal performance,” she paused, her smile tightened, “I suggest you… have a bit more effort in maintaining a healthy attitude while you are on school grounds, Yashiro-san.”
Nene’s eyebrows furrowed slightly, “huh?”
“Oh!” Yuki gasped dramatically, “I didn’t mean to offend you. I was just letting you know that this streak of showing up late, being so predecessor visibly injured, and, well–” she glanced to the side, tilting her head, “other behavioral indicators of being a delinquent is, quite frankly, ruining our reputation as not only a school but our class.”
Nene’s red droopy eyes stared at her, unblinking, “...You think I’m a delinquent?”
“No!” the dark-haired girl shook her head, “No, no. I don’t… but we have been receiving letters from concerned parents and students regarding our school’s atmosphere,”
Yuki smiled at her, “Just… wear the winter uniform from now on and smile, okay?”
Why not stop the people bullying? Nene thought, her eyes settling on the desk in front of her. After all, she has seen it. The entire student council sees it.
Nene nodded.
“Good to see you so cooperative!” She giggled, twirling her hair with a finger, “Well, that wraps up what I was required to discuss with you….”
Nene nods again. She couldn’t help but think that Yuki would keep talking. Maybe it was her way of being kind, not letting anyone come to harass her, even if it was only for a few minutes,
“I actually had a bit of a personal question, if you don’t mind,”
Personal? Nene knew she couldn’t afford to let anyone get close, she started to shake her head, but Yuki paid no mind to her refusal,
“Why did you start growing your hair out?”
Nene inhaled sharply, furrowing her eyebrows,
“Um… It’s not like a big deal or anything. It’s just… you had short hair a couple of years ago and suddenly started growing it. I was just curious!”
Nene hummed, tugging on a strand of her hair, “I grew my hair out… because… Someone I was friends with said that I should,”
Ao-chan said boys liked long hair… Hanako-kun liked my hair.
Yuki giggles at that, “Friend? You don’t have any, though,”
“Um…” Nene looked out the window briefly before staring at her desk once more, “I—”
“Oh my goodness!” She laughed, “I totally didn’t mean to say that. I was so just joking with you!”
Yuki… almost seemed embarrassed,
“Tanaka, Yashiro, Shouldn’t you be going to your clubs?” A male voice called out to them,
Nene quickly looked at the doorway, finding Tsuchigomori standing there, a binder in his hand,
“Apologizes, Tsuchigomori-sensei!” Yuki bowed, giggling at Nene, “I hope we don’t need to discuss this again, Yashiro-san~!”
Nene watched her bounce to the door, slipping by her teacher.
Tsuchigomori walked into the room, “...You know you should join a club, Yashiro,”
Sighing, Nene stared at her desk once more, “I don’t want to,”
-unfinished.

“Who is Yashiro Nene?” Amane’s voice draws Nene out of her daze.
If Nene had a heart, it would have dropped at this moment. Her ruby eyes were wide, unmoving, as she heard her own name come out of Amane’s mouth.
“I keep feeling like I know someone named Yashiro… I heard it one day. I’m not sure where. I thought maybe you might…?” Amane trailed off and glanced over at her through the mirror; his hand stopped when he noticed her expression.
“Hanako-san?” Amane turns around to face her, leaving the cloth he was holding in the sink.
Tears filled her eyes as she looked at him.
“Ah..” She tried to speak, but her body didn’t cooperate with her.
It shouldn’t have bothered her, but hearing him say that name forced all the emotions she hid away to resurface.
Amane frowned, taking her hand and holding it.
“Hanako-san,” Amane starts, watching her try to recompose herself,
She just shakes her head, using her free hand to wipe the tears in her eyes.
Just how long had it been since she heard him say her name?
Her head dropped, staring at the ground. Contemplating if she should let him know.
“Forget you heard that name.” Nene’s voice is firm, “I don’t know where you heard it, but that girl is long dead,”
“Sorry, I just heard it from somewhere,” His voice softened to almost a whisper as he rubbed his thumb over the top of her hand, “I didn’t mean to make you upset,”
“Just forget you ever heard it.” she whispered, leaning into his hand, “Please, Amane-kun…”

[cross-posted]
...
Life was stressful. She was only a first-year, and yet she was expected to balance everything.
With school and Hanako, she felt like she was going insane.
She didn’t want to be home. Don’t get her wrong; she loved her parents; she did! But… all she wanted to do was to get away from everything for a few hours. Once she cleared her head, she would be able to go back and face reality.
She glanced down at her shoes, sighing.
Hanako made her mop, not once, but twice, because apparently, she “didn’t do a good job the first time”.
Her back hurt, but it was not like she could just leave her bag there. After all, once she got home, she had homework to do.
Her lips tugged downwards even further into a pout.
And if she went home to drop her bag off, her mother would question her, and then she would end up not even leaving for a walk.
She slipped the strap of her bag over her shoulder with a huff.
No point in complaining. She could always soak in a bath later if it still hurt.
The streets were quiet. A storm was approaching— or something like that, Nene wasn’t paying attention.
She walked. Letting her feet take her away, not concerned about the destination. Nene allows her mind to wander.
Nene vaguely acknowledges walking up a hill and across several streets.
From silly romance stories that will remain only conceptualized to all the supernatural encounters she’s had to face over the school year.
Tears filled her eyes before they were quickly wiped away.
Now wasn’t the time to cry. She could do that later when she lays down to sleep.
She glanced around at the fences and houses.
It was unfamiliar.
Nene stopped, looking around, her lips pursed together.
She might have wandered too far. She was clearly in a residential area. Not one she recognized.
Pulling her phone from her bag, Nene was quick to open the map, gasping at how far she had walked. She was far away from the school, even farther from home.
A park was nearby. Only a few minutes of walking away.
Glancing at the time on her phone, it would be just before five when she got there. And she could rest for a while before heading home.
She zoomed out, paling at what resided next to the park.
A graveyard.
Water lands on her screen above her thumb, causing Nene to flinch.
Nene scoffs at herself. It was just a graveyard. Nothing to be scared of… no supernatural entities should bother her.
Shoving her phone bag into her bag, Nene forces her feet to continue walking.
There was nothing to worry about. She wasn’t stupid enough to go into the graveyard. She would only be in the park.
The gray clouds that filled the sky started to give way. Light rain sprinkled on her.
Nene sighed once more, picking her feet up faster. Hopefully, she could rest under a tree until the rain, which was quickly falling faster, would calm and allow her to go home.
“Ah,” Nene ran, feeling scales form on her skin. She cursed at herself internally for not bringing her umbrella.
She ran past the entrance of the park, her feet splashing small puddles that started forming.
Under trees and small coverings, she saw people around. Her heart was in her throat, and her scales itched. She couldn’t stop now.
Nene couldn’t let people see her like this.
So Nene kept running.
And then she fell.
Tripping over a root of a tree, she crashed into the mud and rolled down a hill.
She yelped and cried out. Landing on her stomach.
“Owww…” Nene whimpered. Mud clung to her scales.
The pain she was in before was amplified.
She pushed herself up onto her knees, wincing at the pain shooting through her body.
Glancing up at the gray cement, she freezes.
Yugi Amane
Tears filled her eyes at it, reading the dates below.
This was Hanako-kun’s grave. Besides, it was his brother’s.
Nene gasped for air, sobbing.
Hanako-kun had a gravestone.
It was funny. Not really.
Why wouldn’t he have a grave? He was dead, after all.
Nene’s head spun as she crawled to the stone. Falling down onto the damp grass where his body would presumably be buried underneath.
The tree above protected her from the ongoing rain.
They were old, unkempt, and in need of care.
Nene sobbed until her throat hurt and her eyes burned, pulling vines that wrapped around both stones.
She threw the leaves on the base aside, scrapping the mud that clung to the stones off as best as she could with her hands, not caring about how rough the stone felt against her hand.
Hanako-kun and Kou-kun arguing over something stupid in that stupid bathroom.
Hanako-kun eating donuts that Nene had made just for him.
Hanako-kun playing Hanafuda with the mokke.
Nene wiped the mud caked on her hands off on her uniform. Cringing at the amount of time it would take to clean it off.
Amane-kun smiling at her on the rooftop.
He was really dead.
Sniffling, Nene shut her eyes.
“Hanako-kun…”
She was going to have to grow up… that’s what Hanako wants.
Nene was going to become an adult. And get a job that she’ll hopefully like, and pay taxes and fall in love with someone how could she possibly love anyone who isn’t–- and maybe marry them, and get a house.
She’ll have a garden and give vegetables to her friends. She’d make lots of good food.
And a child of hers could go to her school. And meet Hanako-kun.
She would graduate and leave Hanako-kun behind.
Inhaling, she counted the seconds.
1… 2… 3… 4…
She held her breath, slowly counting to seven. When she finishes, Nene will be grounded.
Nene couldn’t— wouldn’t allow herself to break down completely in front of the grave of someone who died in the sixties… even if she was his friend.
She just couldn’t do this to herself.
…6 ….7
Exhaling, she lets her eyes wander around the clouded sky. The rain had finally slowed to a temporary stop.
… 5… 6… 7… 8… As she slowly stood, Nene’s lips tugged into a small, albeit sad, smile.
“Mom must be worried,” She said softly, glancing at the graves once more, “Good night, Amane-kun… Tsukasa-kun.”
She turned her back to them, fishing her phone out to get directions to her apartment.
“See you tomorrow, Hanako-kun,”
