Finally watched Pearl’s POV of Double Life and I am LIVING. Holy moley that was so much fun to binge. The DRAMA the betrayal right from the start and coming out a winner with the only true companions, dogs. What a queen.

convex but they're a vex and an allay that meet in a woodland mansion and fall in love-- that's about it (completely unrelated note, wouldn't an allay-to-vex corruption arc just be SO quirky of the narrative)
As always, click for better quality! Reblogs much appreciated <3

I feel like with the new ~fandom drama~ or whatever going around, I should re-introduce my favorite theory of fandom, which I call the 1% Theory.
Basically, the 1% Theory dictates that in every fandom, on average, 1% of the fans will be a pure, unsalvageable tire fire. We’re talking the people who do physical harm over their fandom, who start riots, cannot be talked down. The sort of things public news stories are made of. We’re not talking necessarily bad fans here- we’re talking people who take this thing so seriously they are willing to start a goddamn fist fight over nothing. The worst of the worst.
The reason I bring this up is because the 1% Theory ties into an important visual of fandom knowledge- that bigger fandoms are always perceived as “worse”, and at a certain point, a fandom always gets big enough to “go bad”. Let me explain.
Say you have a small fandom, like 500 people- the 1% Theory says that out of those 500, only 5 of them will be absolute nutjobs. This is incredibly manageable- it’s five people. The fandom and world at large can easily shut them out, block them, ignore their ramblings. The fandom is a “nice place”.
Now say you have a medium sized fandom- say 100,000 people. Suddenly, the 1% Theory ups your level of calamity to a whopping 1000 people. That’s a lot. That’s a lot for anyone to manage. It is, by nature of fandom, impossible to “manage” because no one owns fan spaces. People start to get nervous. There’s still so much good, but oof, 1000 people.
Now say you have a truly massive fandom- I use Homestuck here because I know the figures. At it’s peak, Homestuck had approximately FIVE MILLION active fans around the globe.
By the 1% Theory, that’s 50,000 people. Fifty THOUSAND starting riots, blackmailing creators, contributing to the worst of the worst of things.
There’s a couple of important points to take away here, in my opinion.
1) The 1% will always be the loudest, because people are always looking for new drama to follow.
2) Ultimately, it is 1%. It is only 1%. I can’t promise the other 99% are perfect, loving angels, but the “terrible fandom” is still only 1% complete utter garbage.
3) No fandom should ever be judged by their 1%. Big fandoms always look worse, small fandoms always look better. It’s not a good metric.
So remember, if you’re ever feeling disheartened by your fandom’s activity- it’s just 1%, people. Do your part not to be a part of it.

Really do not get the arguments about who the strongest avatar is. Like, the answer is clearly Szeto. Dude canonically worked as court bureaucrat, meaning he not only mastered the four elements but on top of that also administrative law. Administrative law. This is a man to fear.

Imposters, they were called.  Shapeshifters.  Changelings.
Just the latest in a long line of names given to them by other species, but they all meant the same thing.  ‘Other’.  ‘Not one of us’.  ‘Doesn’t belong.’
Their species hadn’t belonged anywhere for a very, very long time.
Not since their homeworld had been attacked, destroyed, by the very species they preyed upon, in hopes of stopping the scourge.
All that was left were the ones who had been out hunting, away from Homeworld at the time of its demise.  A far-flung species, homeless, scattered to the corners of the galaxy.
They couldn’t help being predators, nor could they help how much food they needed to gather the reserves to reproduce.  They had hunted by integrating themselves, changing their forms and voices and even their scents to fit in with their prey until time to strike, for millennia.  They knew no other way.
Ships were perfect for an adult Imposter looking to become a progenitor.  Kill and consume one of the crew before launch, take their form and integrate with the rest, wait until far out in space, and boom, buffet time.
But the other species were getting good at ferreting them out, after centuries of experience.  Their numbers dwindled by the year, and the few times their solitary-by-necessity species met up with their own kind, they whispered of fears of extinction.
And then, humans became the latest species to join the Federation.
They were perfect prey.  Nose-blind, substandard hearing, they were a visual species primarily, which made them easy to stalk in the dark.  They had little of the defenses that other species had built up against their kind over time.  While humans were strong, and could easily overpower an Imposter in a small group, alone and unaware they were easy pickings.
What the Imposters were not prepared for, though, was kindness.  Especially not from a Deathworld’s children.
They had no reason to.  Cooperation was a necessity among any species that had managed to get far enough to travel in space, but no species in the Federation were such aggressively pack creatures as humans.  They would pack-bond with anything.
Including, it turns out, with Imposters.
Small gifts.  Extra servings at meal times, because ‘Oh you look peaky, are you hungry?  Here, have part of mine.’.  Affectionate arms across shapeshifted shoulders.  Kind words.  Inclusion.
The word ‘friend’.
For a species who had been alone by necessity since they were old enough to shift, it was a balm to a wound they didn’t even know they had.
Prey ships became their ships, fiercely defended against others of their own kind who would prey upon their too-kind humans, suffused with pheromones that no human could smell but were a blinding ‘STAY AWAY’ mark of territory.
With kindness, and inclusion, and belonging, came another change.
Stolen touches.  Longing glances.  Soft words in private.
And oh, wasn’t kissing a trip.  What kind of species put their teeth so close together as part of courtship?
For one Imposter, things came to a head unexpectedly.  It was their eighth outing with their ship, one that had become comfortable to them, the crew a pack that they had never known they wanted.  They had learned all of the human’s idiosyncrasies, Pink’s tendency to hum without realizing when he was happy, Black’s fondness of cooking, Green’s love of reading on her time off, White ordering extra meat for them when restocking supplies, Blue’s… well… ahem. Everything.
They should have realized, but they had never been a progenitor before, they didn’t know the signs.  They were safe, and well-fed, and their body made the decision for them.
The terror they felt when the door to their quarters hissed open to reveal a worried Blue was only matched by the whimpering mewls of the small litter against their belly.  Only three, not as many as one who had preyed upon a full ship, small and still blind and unable to shift.  They tried to curl around them, hide them, when…
“Oh Red, if you needed the time off, you should have said.”
Blue’s warm hand, stroking through their hair and wiping away sweat from their face, as the human crouched down to get eye to eye.
“You know, we’ve known what you are for a long time.”
Red went still and cold with fear.
“Hey, it’s okay.” A soft brush of lips against their forehead.  “You’re crew, and that’s what matters.  We trust you.”  The look Blue gave them now was a little scolding.  “You should have said you were going to have kids, though.  We could have prepared better.”
“You’re not… you won’t…”
“As far as any of us are concerned, we just gained three adorable new crewmates.” Blue cupped their cheek in one hand and gave a wide grin.  “So long as they aren’t gnawing off any toes, I don’t think there will be any problem.”
Red went nearly limp with relief, turning their head to nuzzle into Blue’s hand with a soft trill of contentment.  “I’ll teach them.  Humans are crew, not food.”
Blue’s smile grew brighter, if possible, then faded slightly.  “So, uh, I’m not sure how things work with you guys, but… I know we’ve been… yannow… I mean I never really thought about being a parent, at least not yet, but… are they, uh… related to me?”
“It… doesn’t quite work like that, Blue.”
