enemies to lovers - alamar x zarathos - fictober day 1
DAY 1: "It's not too late. Let's go."
-
"It was worse when Amayia was a baby," Alamar stammers, his eyes squeezed shut as he clutches his fathers torn tapestry in his left hand. "All I saw was my father. His disappointed face, his cutting words, the pain---I didn't want to do that to my son. But my mind always told me I was going to."
Zarathos isn't new to these attacks. When the memories and pain of Alamar's childhood seizes him in a vice like grip and the sins of his ancestors weigh heavy on his shoulders. They were close once. They could comfort each other then.
Now, Zarathos can only try.
"And yet, you didn't." He whispers, leaning close and letting Alamar rest his head on his shoulder. A dark wing stretches over top of them, dark purple blending with iridescent gold. If he payed attention, Zarathos would notice the faint glow coming from his companion at his mere presence. "When I see Amayia, I see a strong heir. I see someone who can hold a Kingdom on his shoulders. He's strong, but not recessive. You raised him well, Alamar." Alamar sniffles, ignoring that his bones are protesting to sitting this long on the floor. "I hope I have-" "-I know you have. And I can do that for the both of us if you need me to."
For a moment it's quiet. The rising sun dances through tinted glass into a royal hall that's been host to several different Lords. Zarathos, as much as he fights it, finds himself overturning the last few years in his own Kingdom over and over in his head. His own daughter hadn't had the same split second desicion made, what did that say about him? He'd followed tradition---thought he was doing the right thing. On one hand, she'd fallen into step with ease, she's a strong warrior now and makes him unbelievably proud. But, if she had a choice, would she choose this?
Should he have chosen for her, all those years ago?
"Hey," A soft whispered voice catches his attention. "Don't do that. You had no choice." Zarathos shakes his head. "We all have a choice-" "-You didn't. We both know why. I'm...feeling a bit better, fancy a walk among the orchards, before the kids get up?"
The orchards. The place they used to meet when they were kids with too many feelings to count that would never be spoken on. Well, until now. "It's not too late," Alamar whispers as if he's just read his mind. His hand interlocks with Zarathos' and it feels so right.
"Let's go."
