to my half-Filipino brothers and sisters (or full-Filipino brothers & sisters who grew up away from the Philippines)

sometimes, you will hear your Tagalog-Filipino cousins say (usually with a morose sounding laugh that carries the tune of both hopelessness and the wish for the sweet embrace of death) something like “oh my god, I’m so sabog” or “HAHA sorry, bro, I’m a little sabaw” or “fuck man, i’m basag.” Using context clues, you can tell that these words mean “I am in a state of extreme fatigue and incoherence” but here is something you must know:

These three words connote different things.

1) Sabog - you’ve had thr– thir… teen? cups of coffee. your sure your heart is practically vibrating at this point. you can hear colors and see music– disembodied voices of self-depreciation have begun to whisper in your ears. but you’re still going because this paper is due at midnight or your boss expects those numbers by this afternoon and you’re willing to do anything. you draw a pentagram on the floor but you summon God because you chanted the incantation wrong and He is worried about you. “you must sleep. you have not slept in a week, child” He says. you blink up at Him, your eyes burning red because you’ve poured crushed coffee beans in them this morning (an accident you roll with because you’re late for work and dead inside, anyway). “What is that word?” you ask Him. “’S-Sleep’?”

2) Sabaw - the world is hazy through the tears in your eyes. every time you yawn, the voices around you get dimmer and dimmer– “coffee? no thanks, i’ve had a cup.” your thoughts are molasses, and your movements are shaky, like a new born colt. “hey! how are you– what? can you say that again?” they repeat it. “what?” they repeat it again. asking them to repeat it a third time is embarrassing, so you laugh instead. are you underwater? are they underwater? has your requirements finally smothered you? physically manifested into an invisible force that is blocking all your senses from perceiving the things around you? you laugh and you laugh. the person you are talking to is shaking you by the shoulders. “call a doctor!” they shout, desperate. by their feet, an unconscious man lays. “he’s dying, for crying out loud!” you still can’t understand them, so you laugh. “haha, yeah.” god, you want to take a nap.

3) Basag - you’ve had four jaeger bombs, three glasses of lambanog, and an entire pitcher of weng-weng. you doubt you’ll wake up tomorrow. you don’t care.

Bonus:

4) Wasak - ha, the world hates you. you wake up. you have a hangover. and you successfully ruined your life last night by throwing up on your boss’s shoes, breaking up with you significant other over something they’ve only done in your dreams, and telling your mother you never loved her. oh, and you jump-started the apocalypse. on top of that, your head hurts.

oh, well. at least you’re not sabog anymore.

Filipino Pseudo Verbs

Pseudo verb = a verb without conjugations

Mayroon/Meron/May = have/has/there is/there are

Example phrase 1:

Mayroon/Meron akong asawa.

I have a husband/wife.

Example phrase 2:

May libro sa mesa.

There is a book on the table.

Kailangan = need/have to

Example phrase:

Kailangan ko ng umalis.

I have to go.

Puwede/pwede = can/could/may

Example phrase:

Puwede/pwede ba kitang halikan?

May I kiss you?

Dapat = should/must

Example phrase:

Dapat matulog na ako.

I should sleep now.

The Parol The Symbolic Pilipin@ Christmas Lantern

A symbolic icon representing the Pilipin@ Christmas, the parol is a star shaped lantern that is traditionally made with bamboo sticks, rice paper, and a candle or oil lamp. Though people still make it this way, it is now also traditionally made with local capiz shells, an indigenous resource in Pilipin@ crafts and designs.

In practically every Pilipin@ home and business you will see a parol hanging by a window lit up with a candle or blinking electric lights that sparkle and change to a rhythm for the more elaborate lanterns. It is a recognizable symbol among Pilipin@s and an important aspect of our culture.

The parol for Christian Pilipin@s represents the star of Bethlehem that guided the Three Wise Men to the manger of the newly-born Jesus Christ. The Pilipin@ Christmas season, the longest one in the world, which starts in September and ending in January, is not complete without the parol, and because of it the lighting of the parol has dubbed the season in the Philippines as “The Festival of Lights”.

Magandang araw po sa inyong lahat!

Ako po si Kristine O. Maybuena, first year college student ngayong darating na pasukan sa kursong Bachelor of Arts in Communication sa Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila. Batid ko pong halos lahat sa atin ay naghihirap dulot ng umiiral ngayong pandemya. Nagdadalawang-isip nga ako kung dapat ko ba itong gawin o hindi. Mahabang oras akong nagmuni-muni. Marami na rin akong mga post na nakita gaya nito at ang mga iyon ang nag-udyok sa akin para mag-baka sakaling sa pamamagitan nito ay mapagaan kahit papaano ang mga gastusin nina Mama't Papa sa pag-aaral namin ng kapatid kong si John Laurence na kasalukuyang nasa elementarya pa lamang.

Isang Delivery Helper si Papa at isang butihing maybahay naman ang Mama ko. Sa dami ng gastusin araw-araw ay hindi sasapat ang kinikita ni Papa para ibili pa ng laptop o magandang gadget, maging ang magpakabit ng WiFi o internet connection na lubos na kailangan para makasabay sa bagong moda ngayon ng edukasyon.

Habang patagal nang patagal ay papalapit na nang papalapit ang itinakdang araw para sa "online classes". Nakakakaba dahil alam kong napakalaki ang posibilidad na maaaring hindi kami makalahok sa mga online meeting, hindi kaagad malaman ang mga mahahalagang announcement, hindi maipasa sa takdang oras ang mga school work, at hindi matuto at all. Pahirapan din kasi ang pagbubukas online dito sa amin dahil napakahina lamang ng signal (letter E) sa loob ng aming tirahan kung kaya't kinakailangan naming lumagi sa pintuan kung saan minsan ay nasisita pa ng awtoridad dahil sa polisiyang "bawal lumabas" (kahit technically nasa loob pa rin kami).

Hindi ko masasabing consistent honor student ako, ngunit sinisikap kong magkaroon. Wala kaming naganap na opisyal na graduation ceremony at recognition last school year, pero alam kong pasok ang grado ko ngayon sa titulong "With Honors". Hindi rin po ako gaanong naging aktibo sa pagsali sa mga organisasyon at patimpalak noon ngunit kahit papaano ay may mangilan-ngilan akong naipanalo:

Pre-Colonial Filipino History Series #1

Aesthetic dentistry was a common practice in pre-colonial Philippines. Records state that some Filipinos described undecorated teeth as chewed coconut meat. Common practices included:

1. Sangka: filing the teeth

There were different filing traditions. E.g. filing the front teeth down to make them even, filing teeth in a pointy shape, filing grooves in teeth

2. Colouring the teeth

The teeth were painted black by chewing anipay root and red by using red ant eggs. On top of that, flowers were used to paint both the teeth and fingernails.

3. Preserving teeth with a tar based coating

4. Pusad: gold decorations

This included both simple gold decorations (dots), but also more complex designs

These practices were often combined.

I prefer learning from English, because most resources are English-Filipino and many Filipinos tend to speak Taglish (Filipino/English mix), so I feel like it's more convenient using English as the starting language.

Sometimes I choose a mix of English and Dutch if I'm either more familiar with the Dutch words or if the grammar/vocabulary is closer to Dutch.
