A Tale as Old as Time.
This royal throne of kings, this scepter’d isle, This earth of majesty, this seat of Mars, This other Eden, demi-paradise, This fortress built by Nature for herself Against infection and the hand of war, This happy breed of men, this little world, This precious stone set in the silver sea, Which serves it in the office of a wall Or as a moat defensive to a house, Against the envy of less happier lands, This blessed plot, this earth, this realm, this England,
The Coronation of English and British Kings (1066-1953)

thinking about how I've seen OCD get talked about now, but haven't really seen many posts that actually explain what it is. And like, obviously people shouldn't get all their info about mental conditions from posts, but u can't deny that internet communities and stuff play a major role in people recognizing and putting names to their own experiences.
But like since the general public has like absolutely no idea of what OCD actually is (no thanks to popular media), and a lot of things I see talking about intrusive thoughts don't mention OCD (either bc they originated in OCD circles or bc intrusive thoughts aren't Exclusive to OCD or for some other reason), there should prob be more explanation put out on what OCD actually consists of.
Which is kinda hard in some ways, bc there are so many ways OCD can present in terms of what "themes" a person experiences, so someone talking about what their themes are might not ring a bell with someone who experiences different ones. But like, the core thing with OCD isn't the presence of certain themes, it's a specific pattern of spiraling thoughts and reactions.
Like. OCD is a mental condition/illness where people experience stressful, unwanted, repetitive thoughts. These are intrusive thoughts are what make up the "obsessions" part of the disorder. In response to these intrusive thoughts, a lot of people will perform certain actions or think certain things in an attempt to neutralize or disprove the threat they represent. These are the "compulsions" part of the condition.
For a more "traditional" example, someone experiencing intrusive thoughts that they might catch a communicable disease may obsessively wash their hands or google their symptoms to try to lessen the anxiety. While someone who is worried they might hurt someone (even though they very much do not want to hurt someone) may avoid being near sharp objects or may avoid the people they're afraid of hurting.
One of the issues with OCD is that performing the compulsions provides short term relief, but in the long term it only strengthens the stress caused by the intrusive thoughts, thus furthering the thought spiral and actively making it worse, to the point where, depending on your themes, you may be (almost) convinced that your intrusive thoughts represent the truth or the inevitable or something permanent.
Intrusive thought themes cam be literally anything, but some of the common ones are stuff like
Questioning your sexuality, gender, etc (what if I'm actually straight/gay/bi/trans/cis/etc?)
Being worried about losing control and hurting yourself or others physically, sexually, emotionally, basically any way (what if I want to kill someone? What if I'm a pedophile? What if I'm an abuser? What if I want to stab myself? Etc)
Fear of becoming or being sick
Worrying something bad will happen to you or people you care about
Worrying about your spiritual beliefs or lack thereof (what if I'm actually Christian? What if I'm actually atheist? What if i don't believe in the faith i ascribe to? Etc)
Worrying about relationship status (what if I don't actually love them? What if they're not "the one"? What if they're cheating? What if *I'm* cheating? Etc)
What if I'm a bad person?
Fear of losing things
Fear of things not feeling right (this is often be related to other themes via magical thinking. ex: if I don't have my things organized Just Right then something bad will happen)
Fear of unreality
Compulsions vary by theme a lot obviously, but some common ones include
Hand washing
Organizing things until they Feel Right
Checking and double checking and triple checking to make sure you did something correctly
Obsessively reviewing your memories to disprove a thoughtor make sure you don't believe something
Arguing against the thoughts in an attempt to disprove them
Testing your mental reactions to a thought or to certain kinds of content, to show yourself you don't actually believe or feel something
Obsessively googling symptoms, testimonies, things related to your thoughts
Obsessive prayer
Repeating phrases, mantras, affirmations, etc in an attempt to make thoughts go away
Avoiding things and situations that set off your intrusive thoughts
Repeatedly asking for reassurance from others ("I'm not being xyz, right?")
But yeah this obviously isn't exhaustive but, just, if this kind of thing sounds familiar, you should probably do some research on OCD, bc while intrusive thoughts can occur with other conditions, the intrusive thought-compulsion spiral is the core of OCD and isn't really a subaspect of depression/anxiety/ptsd/etc. and the treatment and management of OCD can look different from other stuff, so its a good thing to look into.
(Also it's important to keep in mind, esp if you're someone that doesn't have it, that someone's intrusive thoughts Are Not "secret desires" or "repressed urges" or anything the person even remotely wants to act on. Someone having harm-related intrusive thoughts is not at risk of actually acting on them, no matter how worried they are of doing so.)
Anyway this was a long post and I don't have a neat way to wrap it up and also I accidentally added a poll and now can't get rid of it so here's free poll. I'm running on nyquil and a small amount of straight gin (which works very well at numbing a sore throat) rn gnite

Nearly two decades later, I think it just fully hit me why Iroh told Zuko's crew about how he got his scar. It wasn't just to say, "Have some sympathy for him, he had a hard childhood." It was because the crew were all upset (rightfully so) that Zuko had said, "The safety of the crew doesn't matter." and Iroh was trying to point out that, yes, what Zuko had said was wrong, but that's not what he really thinks, at least, that's not what he used to think. There was a time when Zuko cared about the safety of soldiers he had never even met, so much so that he spoke out of turn, which is what led to the domino effect that caused all of them to be sitting on that ship together. And this is brought full-circle when Zuko climbs the ladder to help the helmsman at the end of the episode. And that's when the crew realizes that, temperament aside, Zuko actually has been and is still willing to put everything on the line for the safety of others.

i was recently diagnosed with OCD, and we seriously need to change the way we talk about the disorder. the average time between onset of OCD symptoms and beginning to receive treatment is over a decade, and i suspect at least part of the reason why is the way we talk about OCD societally, or rather the way we dont talk about it.
no, OCD isn't the "clean freak" disorder. you dont have to check that your door is locked 17 times in order to have OCD. the actual symptoms of OCD are as varied as any other disorder, but it seems that only the most palatable or easily digestible symptoms get talked about regularly.
no one wants to talk about mental compulsions (ex: ruminating on past and potential future situations with "what ifs"), and how they can be even more severe or disruptive than visible ones.
no one wants to talk about the extremely distressing intrusive thoughts that can happen, let alone the fact that intrusive thoughts dont start and stop with violence. yes, this includes bigotry and pedophilia, and no, people with these thoughts are not bigots or pedophiles. intrusive thoughts play on your fears, not who you actually are.
the reason no one with OCD is talking about their symptoms and experiences is because we're demonized for having them and harassed for expressing them, and that shit is unacceptable. we fucking deserve safe places to discuss our symptoms without fear of it being misconstrued and used against us (or just straight up being verbally assaulted, or worse). thought crime isnt fucking real. your thoughts do not make you a good or bad person, your actions do.

FUN FACT. Following a massive mental breakdown I had in March 2021 that set me back months of art progress, I completely stopped using a lineless style and never looked back. Tonight I decided fuck it, it’s been two years. Might as well give it a shot. This feels like absolution

Christmas prompt: Sherlock and Molly get into a fight and he wants to apologise, but she's gone to her family's for the holidays and he doesn't know where they are exactly .So he's going caroling door to door to find her
John didn’t know why he’d gotten put up to this. Honestly. Sherlock hadn’t told him what they were doing, though he’d been very specific about the area.
He’d gotten out of the cab, clapped his gloved hands together and looked expectantly at his friend who’d dragged him out on Christmas Eve of all days to - “What? - - There’s no case?” he’d said, mouth dangling in the air.
“No,” said Sherlock who strode ahead confidently. “We’re looking for Molly.”
“Molly - Molly Hooper?” John repeated, taking to jog to keep up.
Sherlock let out a breath, surveying the row and row of identical houses, “Yes.”
“…What did you do?”
“It was just a disagreement.”
“So - -  what are we here for then?” said John stopping up, though feeling more confused when he saw a car race into the street suddenly stop, before Greg Lestrade came running out of the car, gun practically at the ready.
The detective inspector was breathless when he reached the two, “I came as soon-,”
Sherlock said “No need for that,” - causing Lestrade to disable and holster it, looking a bit put out that he wasn’t action-man for a second.
“Right, so what’s going on?”
“At least you didn’t bring a team this time.”
Lestrade smile dropped.
“What - is it one of those other emergency’s?”
John laughed, “Yeah, if finding out which building Molly Hooper is in is an emergency. I thought you’d be able to find her yourself?”
“She’s surprisingly good at covering her tracks.”
“Wait - we’re trying to find Molly?” said Lestrade making a face. “What do you mean she’s good at covering her tracks?”
“And you know the address, don’t you Greg?”
Lestrade shook his head, “I don’t.”
“Yes, you do.”
“You could have asked him in a text..” said John in a low voice.
“Wouldn’t have given it to him, either way.”
“What do I have to do?” said Sherlock causing Greg to light up.
“I don’t know,” he said with a very put on sigh, crossing his arms as if he was thinking it through. “You know what I like to do every year-“
“No. Absolutely not.”
“What?” Said John grinning as well.
“It’s not to everyone’s taste though,” said Greg as sincerely as he could. “But I really do enjoy it.”
John blinked.
Sherlock groaned, “Caroling. Seriously? Three grown men. Alone.”
“The PM did it in Love Actually!”
“Hugh Grant isn’t the actual Prime Minister though, just throwing that out there, Sherlock,” said John unable to hide his laugh.
Sherlock whipped his head towards him, “And you’re up to this as well? Caroling?”
John made a face at that, looking pointedly at Greg, “How many houses before you let up?”
“Ten?”
“TEN?!” Sherlock guffawed. Fury rolling through him.
“Well, if you really want to see her, because we both know why we’re doing this,” said Greg.
Sherlock made a face. Both John and Greg waited with bated breath. John avoided asking any questions as to “why” even if he was dying to know, but he had an inkling as to why. There’d been a phone call. A “i love you” and surprisingly radio silence on either end, after all. No matter how he turned it around his head - if it had meant nothing, then, they wouldn’t be here right now.
“Fine, fine-“ he said waving his hand dismissively, letting Greg lead the way. They rang the door, and just as they were about to - it was Molly who opened the door.
Greg and John wandered off quite quickly after that.
“So, you were pulling his leg?” Said John as they walked off.
“Yeah, ten houses? Are you mad?”

you know how kids tend to subconsciously adopt the mannerisms of their parents? i wonder how far back that stretches.
do i laugh like my great grandfather, because that's the way my grandma laughed, and my mom copied her?
does the way my dad make comedic sounds when he's driving actually originate with a distant uncle two hundred year ago, who made funny noises in the horse-drawn cart because it made his niece laugh?
i wonder which of my little mannerisms came from ancestors long passed, and i wonder which of mine will echo in family descendants long after i'm gone.
