Got a very inspired ask inquiring about the villains in my Better Call Saul french AU so here's Gus aka famous chef Gustavo Faure and his main waiter Léo haha. More info under the cut as always...

So at first I thought about making Gus a fast-food owner like his canon counterpart, but it just doesn't fit really well if you wanna frenchify it all with nuance. We have fast-foods ofc and we do enjoy fried chicken lol, but Los Pollos Hermanos has this very distinct "patriotic" feeling that wouldn't translate as well in France, as fast-foods are american in conception. I thought about making Gus the owner of some cheaper chain like Courtepaille lmao, but it feels too memey and doesn't have the prestige that his character has canonically. Gus assimilates perfectly into american society with his brand, and caters to the people locally, so I thought it would be fair for him to do the same in France. And if you wanna cater to lovers of chic, gastronomy and prestige, what's better than being the chef of some fancy restaurant, right? It felt cliché af and looses the "close to the people" part but it honestly fits his character well, imo...

He would be extremely respected locally but still friendly and approachable due to him crafting some kind of tragic backstory for himself and his restaurant. Basically he would play the "Chilean refugee that climbed to the top of foreign cuisine" card and everyone would buy it. French people love to eat and are fond of mixing their culture's meals with more international food, so yes: I think he would serve a fusion of french/Chilean food!

He'd also be an entrepreneur as famous french chefs often have side businesses like bakeries or published books, which I think respects his canon personality pretty well. Fancy french chefs also like to hang out outside their kitchen to greet their guests and I can totally imagine Gus do that. He'd still be able to conceal his shady side nicely. He's canonically seen to like fine wine, good products, and cooks Paila Marina for Walt, so congrats to Gus for already being french in conception and not making this idea feel like a stretch lol.

I have no idea about his exact role concerning drug traffic in Europe, as I said I'm pretty ignorant about that… But he'd use his business and image to form connections and launder his money. His backstory with Max stays the same in the AU aka Max was his business """"partner""" who died killed by the Salamancas.

I don't think changing his first name was necessary, but his last name sounding american I thought I would just frenchify it a bit lol. I don't know what the name of his restaurant would be, but definitely something short, spanish, and aesthetic/poetic. Maybe a reference to Max to allude to the Hermanos part.

Bonus : I know they don't canonically meet, but in my AU I think Chuck, as a rich lawyer, would eat at Gustavo's often. They'd be acquainted :) And maybe Jérôme aka Jimmy meets him thru his brother and later discovers Gus' shady side, when the events of BrBa start.

As a middle-eastern guy, I saw that you didn't really have any ideas for the Salamancas and the rest of the cartel yet other than just Spain, and I have an idea/suggestion for an Arabic take, maybe? I live in Europe myself (not in France but in Germany), but I know that they have a lot of Arab immigrants as well. That could be cool in my opinion!! Of course it's up to you tho

You're right!! Making the Salamancas Northern African would be a pretty cool and logical choice, as there are lots of immigrants from this community in France, like in Germany. It's also, I believe, what french showrunners would go for if brba was transposed. However I kinda avoided going that route because I'm not from this community myself, and racebending characters is always kind of a touchy topic... Someone also suggested making Gus from a french speaking African country like Sénégal instead of Chile, and I must say it would also be interesting regarding the transposition contextually. I'll reblog a a very good addition I forgot to rb by foxgloveinthesun because they said it better than me!

on the vibes of albuquerque: i stayed briefly in the city after a miserable trip to colarado, and, after that elevated nightmare, albuquerque was a very hot oasis. it's incredibly culturally diverse and has a lot of heart despite the outward misery of its scrubby chihuahuan desert surroundings. from what i understand, it's a city of extremes: i had the best mexican food in my entire life there, but immediately after a meth addict tried to solicit me for cash. cool place

Thanks for your really interesting input! I think BrBa does a really nice job at showing this portrait you just described of the city, because I can picture this nicely despite never having been to the US. I'll keep it in mind!

For the BCS French AU, what city in France do you think would be roughly equivalent to Albuquerque, New Mexico?

That's a good question! Foxgloveinthesun suggested Lille to be France's equivalent to Cicero or Albuquerque and I agree with their take:

"I could have seen them as Northern French : the “underdog” part of the country, more industrial and poor (their roots in Cicero gives that impression). Northern french are known as a rather friendly population as well as industrious, hard at work people. Very often taken forgranted or undermined, which would work for Jimmy. Closeness with belgium and the Netherlands makes it easy to set earlier experience with scams and drugs… Or maybe Lille would be the Albuquerque of this version! Cool with all the borders surrounding the area, the harbours and the hinterland and old crappy farms to replace the desert!"

Personally I think cities are especially difficult to transpose because the context and geography is always vastly different from place to place... And also because I have no idea what an American would have to say about Albuquerque. If I knew I'd be able to find a city with the same reputation/feeling but without this information it's hard to say for sure (and if you're an American feel free to tell me what ABQ feels like to you haha). But so far, Lille fits nicely imo. I also like the idea of BCS french AU taking place in Marseille, the climate feels closer to ABQ and it's also a city of contrasts... Much to think about!

Hey anon, thank you so much for your message that totally inspired me to draw >:) I only fleshed out Gus so far, first of all because he's my favorite villain <3 but second because his transposition in the french AU feels very natural to me. I have no idea how the Salmancas would be and what they'd even do. I have zero knowledge of the european drug traffic in the early 2000s lol, and I'd have to make them spanish I suppose? The mexican diaspora is, as you can imagine, very circumstancial in France, but maybe it could fit? I have no idea, that's why I'm struggling to come up with anything about them... However, I can picture their lavish lifestyle fitting neatly into french society, with the Don's house and everything. Lalo's clothing style would be even gayer too that's for sure lol.

Got my hands on the script of Anatomy of a Fall, and I couldn't help but compare it with some scenes from the movie because that's how deep I am rn :'D Anyway, here are some of my finds and things I personally enjoyed. I'm sure there are more things to dig out but these are what I wanted to share with the world. The order of my finds will be chronological, for the most part, but keep in mind that sometimes, some scenes were edited to show up later, or earlier than originally intended. Spoilers for the whole movie obviously so you've been warned!

Takes place when Vincent first visits Sandra to discuss Samuel's death. In the movie, Sandra stops Vincent and cuts him harshly, saying "STOP, I did not kill him". Vincent then says a line that I think is pretty iconic in the movie, a sarcastic : "That's not the point. Really". His line is much harsher than on the script, where he's a bit softer. "You don't need to tell me that" implies that he has some deep, loyal faith in Sandra, while "That's not the point" cuts any further discussion. He really doesn't wanna know if she actually did it. Comes from a wish to remain blind still, but with less innocence and a lot of denial. Oh, Vincent.

In the movie, his last line is way better imo, he says "No one's gonna believe that. I don't believe that." I like the emphasis on his opinion rather than the fleeting and impersonal "it's really hard to believe". Truly hits way harder and puts Vincent back in the position of a lawyer.

The rest will be under the cut because I think it's gonna be a wall of text I apologize guys...... This movie does things to my brain.

There's a scene that was cut where Vincent phones Nour while still at Sandra's, which I would have enjoyed a lot but I'll admit it's a bit filler-y. Doesn't add a lot and kinda cuts the serious tone of Sandra's confession, imo, as they discuss the judge's antics in a pretty comical manner. I just love Nour so I'm based......

Another, REALLY long scene that was cut where a medium comes into Sandra's house to feel Samuel's ghost and foreshadows Daniel poisoning Snoop with aspirin. I had a good laugh at that one, honestly. It feels pretty out of place with the tone of the movie, and the personality of the characters even... I can't picture Sandra calling a medium. I'm glad they removed it because the foreshadowing was unnecessary too. It's still interesting that they had planned it however.

This takes place after Vincent finds out about the tape. Interestingly, his whole line was cut after "before he died". In the movie, he never comments on Sandra's affairs/sexuality. He never really asks much about her life at all. He truly is blinded by his wish to shield himself from her inner demons, in order to maintain his undying loyalty towards her. To see what he wants of her...

Another scene that was completely cut (a flashback, I believe?) where Sandra makes Daniel pose for a german photographer to make some money, which Monica dislikes, and then they argue. I think it really frames her as too unsympathetic, so I'm also glad it was cut.

Okay, so now, here comes The Big Change. The scene where Vincent and Sandra drink together after the first trial was heavily altered, because its tone in the movie is pretty tense when compared with the lightheartedness of the script. In the script, they laugh and reminisce together about the past and even kiss at the end of the scene. In the movie, none of was I screenshot happens : instead of playing along with the 'firing Vincent' suggestion, the scene ends with Sandra scolding Vincent for judging her in his head. Vincent backs off and the scene ends. Another instance of him not pressing emotional depth to shield himself.

There are other scenes I liked (many that touch upon Sandra's books) but I'll stop there. Hope you'll enjoy that... I might draw some of these so stay tuned... This movie has absorbed my soul but it feels good to be alive, thank you Justine Triet.

OKAY SO, I was praying for someone with a huge brain like yours to add their input to my silly AU! I'll comment on your suggestions because there's some epic stuff right here :p

I'm glad my breton headcanon for the McGill brothers had such a good reception and is widely accepted now >:) But starting with them : -Your idea of calling Jimmy Jérôme is honestly stellar, and way better than the other suggestions I've received so far. Someone suggested Yoann but I didn't wanna go for a first AND last name from Bretagne, my own idea, Jacques, feels too old-fashioned for a man born in the sixties as I said, and Jean (James' most literal traduction) is too basic and also lacks realism for a man from Jimmy's generation. Jérôme is realistic, not too ugly, close to canon, can be shortened to a stupid nickname that fits Jimmy's personality (Gégé…….. putain) and doesn't sound too bad imo. I second that.

-Charles' name being shortened to Charlie would most likely only be on Jimmy's behalf, sorry for not being clear on that! Americans use their nicknames in everyday settings in a way that french people don't, that's for sure, but I can totally picture Jimmy going salut mon charlot/charlie lol. Howard and the others at the firm wouldn't call him Charlie the same way canon Charles is called Chuck on the regular, granted. On second thought maybe Howard would, but only occasionally and not at work, but that's about it. As for the charlie hedbo connotation, it didn't even cross my mind. Better Call Saul takes place in the early 2000s, so the events of 2013 wouldn't even be pictured nor linger in people's minds, and before that I don't think anyone associated that nickname with the infamous journal. It's most likely a product of our times. Peanut's Charlie Brown would most likely pop into their minds first tbh, at least I think so.

-I absolutely adore your Kim Wexler take. I was indeed wondering if Kimberly had the same connotation in the US as it has in france (aka a lower class feel of someone who likes reality TV), but I honestly doubt it. Stéphanie is a great name for her as it retains a neutral, everyday feel, can be shortened, and Leclerc does sound like Wexler phonetically + as you said alludes to her blonde complexion/morality. How does it feel to be a genius?

-Albuquerque/Lille/Cicero talk : I adore that idea. I totally see why french BCS would fit neatly in a northern setting, and as you said, the drug traffic subplot would most likely be an European thing rather than a strictly french one, obviously. I need to research the specifics before drawing Lalo and the others because I truly know nothing about that topic, but it's great!

-Latouche for Saul is extremely funny, but it reminds me too much of th Ducobu comics fjkdfgfg. I do see why it'd fit tho, and I'll add it to the suggestions I've had so far :] I also thought of something that rimes with his catchphrase rather than something too puny in itself. We truly haven't found the perfect Saul Goodman french equivalent, folks!

-Bill Oakley/Guillaume Duchêne in the red prosecutor dress is not only a great addition, but something I will immediately draw >:) I was frustrated at the lack of prosecutors in BCS (for... normal reasons obviously) so thank you for reminding me of him!

Obviously the action and the whole premise of bcs/brba wouldn't work in france (legal system aside, the whole cartel and walter white storyline would have to suffer major changes due to social security and the mexican cartel well. not existing here stricto sensu). But let's talk about the real Important Stuff : their names

I think Howard Hamlin would work well as Edouard Hamelin. He looses the cool HH initials yes, but it works really well as a genuine french name imo, and Howard/Edouard are pretty close phonetically

Chuck could still be called Charles without any realism issue, but he'd be nicknamed Charlie rather than Chuck because that's what a french person would go for... nicknames don't work the same, yeah

Kimberly Wexler and James McGill, I have no idea lmao. James when translated becomes Jacques, but it's such a boomerish uncool name that I cannot resolve myself to call my boy like that. It's also one generation too old. Jimmy being born in '60 could technically be called Jacques, but it'd be old-fashioned, as it's a name mostly given to the kids of the decade that came before him. McGill is an irish name, so something funny could be making Jimmy a breton with a funky last name like Gall/LeGall ? That's hilarious to me. But who knows.

Saul Goodman is a pun, so this is even harder for me to conceptualize. Saul's marketing would definitely not work in france at all, as no one would realistically hire a lawyer with a puny name and such chaotic displays (+ I think ads for legal démarchage are illegal mind you). However, let's have a crack at it. It would have to be a pun based off an expression similar to "it's all good man", or implying something positive and familiar... I need to think on that one.

salut!! je voulais juste savoir si tu continuais the smell of samba (je veux pas paraître comme si je te presse, je vois bien que tu as d'autres choses à faire) parce que j'adore cette histoire, les dessins sont magnifiques et la suite promet d'être intéressante, notamment avec walter. pas besoin d'une date ou quoi, je lirai, et avec plaisir, quand les chapitres sortiront.

Aw Anon, merci beaucoup de ton message ! :'( Je sais que TSOS n'a pas été updaté depuis plus d'un an maintenant, et make no mistake, cela m'attriste énormément. Sans raconter ma vie j'ai eu du mal à me remettre à faire quelque chose d'aussi chronophage que du webtoon sans situation personnelle à peu près stable. Son grand frère Stone Flower est sorti dans une période de ma vie très insouciante où j'avais pas mal de temps libre ainsi qu'un grand optimisme dans l'existence. Je récupère seulement peu à peu tout cela après deux années globalement assez difficiles et pesantes. Au bout d'un moment j'ai aussi beaucoup tergiversé sur "comment" reprendre, car je ne suis pas fan du format webtoon tout en longueur et je souhaiterais plus repartir sur des planches à la Stone Flower, voir même encore plus proches du format BD. Bref, tous ces blocages ont fait que je n'ai pas avancé sur les planches de TSOS alors que j'ai tout écrit et que l'histoire est précise dans ma tête... Il y a aussi l'effet égoïste du manque d'engouement par rapport à Stone Flower, qui entrait plus rapidement dans le concret de l'aspect romance et qui je pense manque aux lecteurs pour le moment pour s'investir...

...Mais tes mots me touchent énormément. Savoir que quelqu'un attends la suite, aime mon travail et prenne le temps de me le dire me redonne courage. Je suis sur une pente qui remonte depuis le début de 2024, je reprends peu à peu goût au dessin, et l'histoire de Paolo me tient énormément à cœur donc je me dois de la raconter. Sachant tout cela, The Smell of Samba fera sans aucun doute un retour cette année... A vue de nez par rapport à mon avenir je sais déjà à peu près quand, mais je préfère vous laisser la bonne surprise ;)
