Drove into the city this morning for a walking tour with a nice French lady. Done my 10,000 steps for today and, more importantly, so far I have raise £49 for a good cause (at Limerick, Ireland) https://www.instagram.com/p/CpkywdVKjfJ/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Most people know that we had soviets in Limerick, but did we also have fascists? Pictured is a fasces, found in Limerick as an ornament. A Fasces (from the Latin word fascis, meaning "bundle"; Italian: fascio littorio) is a bound bundle of wooden rods, sometimes including an axe (occasionally two axes) with its blade emerging. The fasces is an Italian symbol that had its origin in the Etruscan civilization and was passed on to ancient Rome, where it symbolized a magistrate's power and jurisdiction. The fasces, as bundle of rods with an axe, was a grouping of all the equipment needed to inflict corporal or capital punishment. In ancient Rome, the bundle was a material symbol of a Roman magistrate's full civil and military power, known as imperium. They were carried in a procession with a magistrate by lictors, who carried the fasces and at times used the birch rods as punishment to enforce obedience with magisterial commands. The image has survived in the modern world as a representation of magisterial or collective power, law, and governance. The fasces frequently occurs as a charge in heraldry: it is present on the reverse of the U.S. Mercury dime coin and behind the podium in the United States House of Representatives; and it was the origin of the name of the National Fascist Party in Italy (from which the term fascism is derived). During the first half of the twentieth century both the fasces and the swastika (each symbol having its own unique ancient religious and mythological associations) became heavily identified with the fascist political movements of Benito Mussolini and Adolf Hitler. During this period the swastika became deeply stigmatized, but the fasces did not undergo a similar process. The fasces remained in use in many societies after World War II due to its already having been adopted and incorporated into the iconography of numerous governments outside Italy, prior to Mussolini. Such iconographical use persists in governmental and various other contexts. (at Limerick, Ireland) https://www.instagram.com/p/CpPvIoVqQeW/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Adare from Limerick.ie on Vimeo.
The charming village of Adare, founded in the 13th Century, overlooks the fording point of the River Maigue from which the village derives its meaning “The Ford of the Oak” (Áth Dara). Located just 18 kilometres south-west of Limerick city, the village is widely renowned as one of the most beautiful in Ireland.
And it’s little wonder, because Adare delivers the Ireland of the imagination – in reality.

Judaism is one of the oldest of the world's religions. Jews are found around the world, in all colours and ethnic groups, and can be described as a group of people bound by a way of life. Judaism is one of the oldest of the world's religions. Jews are found around the world, in all colours and ethnic groups, and can be described as a group of people bound by a way of life. Jews follow the beliefs of Jewish Law, found in the Torah (the first five books of the Hebrew Bible), and also written and oral-tradition sources such as the Talmud and the Mishnah. The Law, known as halachah ("The Path") governs areas such as diet, worship, marital relations, etc. but can be summed up in the reply given by the 1st-century BCE sage, Hillel the Elder, when taunted by a Roman soldier to explain the whole Torah while standing on on foot: "That which is hateful to yourself, do not do unto others; the rest is commentary. Now, go and study!" The religion's leaders, referred to as rabbis, are considered to be the most prominent figures in any Jewish community. They are experts in the Law, lead worship in the Synagogue (the place of Jewish worship), give guidance in Jewish practice and often act as a mediator in their community. There has been an established Jewish community in Ireland for some centuries. There are five synagogues in the Irish Republic (three Orthodox and one Progressive Congregation located in Dublin and one in Cork that supports a very small community). While there is there is no formal Jewish community centre in the Mid-West region, there are a number of Jewish families and individuals living in the area. Tough question: I was at the Jewish cemetery in Castletroy and a lot of the graves still have little stones placed on them, a sign someone remembers them, and daffodils. Does anyone know if there is a Jewish community in Limerick or if someone takes care of the graves? (at Adare Walks) https://www.instagram.com/p/CZ9o6McqhB2/?utm_medium=tumblr

President Michael D Higgins today welcomed seven indigenous dexter cattle to the grounds of Áras an Uachtaráin. The cattle will graze the grounds of the Áras for three months as part of a programme to enhance the biodiversity of the 130-acre site, with the intention that they will continue to graze in the grounds for a few months each year. Peter Bryans from Donabate Dexter Farm delivered the indigenous Dexter cattle to the Áras today. The cattle normally live in North Co Dublin, and are part of a sustainable grazing programme in Fingal County Council’s protected coastal lands. It was decided that some cattle would move to the Áras for a few months every year following recommendations in a recent biodiversity audit, commissioned for the President by the Office of Public Works and undertaken by researchers from Trinity College. The audit recommended a sustainable growing regime for the Áras grounds, combining appropriate mowing to reduce the nutrient load in the soil, the introduction of grass-suppressing yellow rattle, and the presence of cattle to promote an improvement in the biodiversity of the meadows. A spokesperson for Áras an Uachtaráin said these measures are aimed at allowing for the establishment of indigenous wildflowers, with corresponding increases in fauna dependant on such a diversity of flora. As part of the programme to enhance biodiversity at the Áras, President Higgins also welcomed two Connemara ponies. In May of this year, a six-week-old pony that President Higgins called Aimhirgin and his mother, Snowy, were brought to the Áras to graze on the grounds for four months. They were brought to the grounds as part of a partnership with Kylemore Abbey and, like the arrangement with Donabate Dexter Farm, it is hoped that the Connemara ponies will graze the land for a few months each year.
