#DalitStudies
Black feminist Audre Lorde in her now famous essay wrote that 'Black Feminism is not White Feminism in Blackface'. Similarly, Dalit feminism is not Bhramanical feminism. Existing outside the boundary of hegemonic femininity it provides a critique of the many exclusions Dalit and other Indian women face in everyday society and academia.

Autistic Experience in the Majority World
Autism and neurodiversity are terms that are gaining use in everyday conversation. The recognition of the diversity of neurological being represents a paradigm shift. Discussions about this have traditionally been orchestrated in a few countries in the west. This is a problem because it cuts us off from relevant world history, human context and opportunities. Join us as we start building a library of experiences and discuss how we can begin to understand the many challenges and opportunities to learn about autism and neurodiversity. We will be exploring the intersections of autism, culture, material conditions, policy and activism with our speakers in their respective fields.
Our speakers
Yulin Cheng, scholar and PhD researcher
Karen Muriuki, autistic self advocate and neurodiversity consultant
Rakshita Shekar, educator and consultant for disability rights
Date : 26th April 2023
Time : 12 noon – 2.00pm UK time

“My life has been one adversity upon another. But I always fought back. Not once, not even once, did I flinch from adversity.” Fukuda Hideko
Do you know about Fukuda Hideko? This Japanese feminist and socialist lived an extraordinary life standing up for the things she believed in. She saw how class and gender inequality were inextricably linked and worked towards building more equal society.

A poster with a Japanese wood block painting on the left. A plain deep red panel sits at the right.
A text box sits in the middle with a black and white picture of Fukuda Hideko
The text reads
Fukuda Hideko 5th October 1865- 2nd May 1927.
Japanese feminist, socialist, author and educator. She attempted to further socialist and liberal aims. She protested the Japanese invasion of Korea.
As an educator sheand founded several schools for women and underprivileged people. She established the newspaper Sekai Fujin (women of the world), the aim of this feminist socialist newspaper was to focus on women’s issues and reform. In addition to publishing issues of domestic interest the newspaper also focused on international issues
Description of the painting.
Night Scene in Yoshiwara by Katsushika Oi
A wood block from the Edo period. The scene shows a brothel lit up at night. The women are dressed in brightly coloured kimono with elaborate hairdos.
They are sat on red mats. People on the street outside are looking inside with interest. There is a stark contrast between the light inside the brothel and dark outside on the street.
The image draws attention to the women in Japanese courtesans working in their brothel quarters but is blocked out by the poles painted in though which people on the street are trying to catch a glimpse.
