jaein’s uncertain if recently is accurate anymore but considering they were wrapping up the last parts of their promotion, but she simply nodded at joosung’s question. “yeah. it was kind of quick though.” the preparations, the promotions and just everything surrounding it seemed like a quick cash grab. she definitely wouldn’t be surprised if that was indeed the case. 

“uhm, i’m actually not sure. i think they want to trim off a bit of the dead hair on the bottom and yeah, maybe i’ll be getting that treatment you’re talking about.” how she keeps up with such things baffles jaein, but she won’t judge. maybe joosung was just really interested in hair treatments. “how about you? doing something crazy with your hair or something?” with that, she lets out a chuckle before grabbing a piece of her own hair, trying to imagine it in a wild color. 

“i’ve heard great things, so i can’t wait to see how nice your hair looks after.” 

sung looked down at her hair, as if it had suddenly turned neon green, and huffed out small bits of laughter. “um, yeah, i don’t think so. unless you know something i don’t,” she tilted her head, raised her brow, teased, then chuckled more wholeheartedly. “last i heard, the plan was to keep my hair dark for this whole comeback. since my concept this release was more pure, i think it’s playing into the title track’s concept. at least, that’s my guess anyway. there’s so many moving parts in every release that it’s hard to know what the actual intention behind something is, you know?” after rambling for so long, she wasn’t sure if anything she’d just said made sense, so she took the breath to transition back to the actual question jaein asked. “i’m just here for a trim, too. i try to come by monthly, but it’s not always so easy with schedules and everything.”

with her hum, sung could relate. “i used to do the same sometimes. it’s hard to find the time to be able to read as an idol the same way i used to as a kid. though, it’s more because i’d end up forgetting that i’d started a book until i came across it again.” whether her group members agreed or not, sung felt the slow pull away from being the public’s girl group was natural, and a good thing. none of them would be able to keep up the incessant schedules being on the top had forever. “i think i’m finally reaching a place i can properly read again, even if it takes longer than it used to.”

“um,” sung turned her head up and squinted an eye, “well, there aren’t vampires. it’s regular people so, it’s more like pride and prejudice, but a little more modern. i don’t really read many supernatural type books, not the scary ones for sure, but i could think of a few recommendations if you like that part of it, too.”

sung vs dance

i won’t spend too much time on backstory bc it’s in her bio but the tldr; is that sung got into dance when she was 11 bc she was lonely moving around and fell for iu, then subsequently the idol industry

unlike most dancers who have been dancing since they were in diapers, sung didn’t have a niche. while it means she’ll never be as good as someone in a genre that does, it also means she has more variability in style, which can sometimes be helpful as an idol

with her fam’s newfound money money, she tried out a bunch of different genres. but her favorite became ballet, and that accounts for a Lot of sung’s style, and also her faults that she’s working through

i’m p sure most people would say that ballet is the most strict dance genre, and in sung’s case, it was Constantly pointed out that because she started late she will never be good enough to go pro. and sung never wanted to be a professional ballet dancer, like, she knows she has limits And already has dreams of being an idol

but... that kind of strictness motivates her. she’s only ever competing against herself, but she views herself as a literal competitor. if she isn’t beating her previous self, she’s getting the silver medal and that’s not good enough. so even if she didn’t want to be a professional, she was still spurned on to aim for it anyway

this thinking is what creates the practice room monster. if she’s on a team with people, she wants them to also be striving for the perfection that she does, and can slip into pushing them to the levels that she does... which are levels that aren’t always healthy. def given herself way too many injuries from pushing herself too far

she’s also become a stronger dancer over the period of her debut as well, and will continue to do so in the future

while she adores ballet, and it adds to her ~color, it’s not perfect. because sung seeks extreme cleanliness, this can get in the way of musicality, groove, and sometimes fluidity

being clean is the golden ticket to sung, when it should probably be seen instead as one piece of the puzzle. over time, this has lessened, which has a lot to do with her confidence and comfort in dancing too. in the future, i think she’ll be able to restructure how she thinks of what makes good dancing, and it will change how she approach dance and therefore her groove

and bc i put a lot of thought into this but don’t have a good storyline section for these things, these are more notes on sung’s dance style

her center of gravity is low, and she usually has strong balance bc of it

in terms of control, her arms > legs. arm control is one of her best skills, refined through candy’s gestural choreography. her leg control isn’t bad at all, but it’s best when a move comes from a planted position? maybe a better way to explain this is that speed is not a strength with her legs

she has strong spine flexibility (i think sung has good posture always aside from sitting in chairs weird, which helps. her spine is in good condition, was always pretty flexible, and something she was able to easily pick up on when she started dancing)

sunshine sparked a firework in sung’s chest, morphing into the small smile pulling up at her cheeks, but it was aborted at the rest of alice’s question. her eyes followed alice’s gesturing, then from closed lips a, “hm?” followed, finally, by the pieces fitting together in her head. not the location, but their activity.

frankly, sung hadn’t put enough thought into her thoughts to string them in a way that could be vocalized. her opinion on schedules wasn’t particularly asked of often-- maybe because she tended to be the one asking others first. either way, her questioning hum turned into a thinking hum. “well, i love doing any dance schedules. i don’t know how other people think of this, but i think it’s one of our best skills as a group.” she took a breath. there was a ‘but,’ there was. speaking only on the positives wouldn’t be authentic to herself or the years she’d spent with alice thus far. “i’m not sure how much it promotes stereotype, though. they’re very different. it’s nice for fans to see different sides of us, but...” unfinished, she couldn’t bring herself to voice the full concern. with how often they went for girl crush concepts while doing crowned, how could they know that wasn’t the direction the company would want to take them down? sung couldn’t imagine that was what their fans would want from them.

saying as much would be so premature, especially when she hadn’t had the time to think through those thoughts enough to not run on a fully emotional basis, so she let the sentence be. “how are you feeling about it?”

alice couldn’t say she understood the direction bc was taking with candy. sure, their more recent releases had lined up with their color pop concept, but there was a definite difference between, say, stereotype and tt. while stereotype was probably the better song from a musical perspective, one couldn’t deny the popularity of candy’s more, well… vapid title tracks. it wasn’t that she particularly minded the songs themselves - even if she did, she was never one to complain - but she missed topping the charts. she missed knowing that each song candy released would get her mother’s seal of approval. 

still, even candy’s more recent songs made more sense for them than this dance video. people liked candy for their bright, poppy sound and sweet visuals. the kiss me more cover they’d filmed had made sense for them in a shocking way - who would have ever expected alice to sing lines like got him wishing that the pussy was a kissing booth? it also showed off both their vocals and dancing, which was always a perk.

this video, however, alice just didn’t get. sure, they looked cool, but the concept would have been more at home on ultraviolet than candy. then there was the fact that sung was given little to no spotlight in a dance cover. she was candy’s main dancer, for crying out loud! their main vocalist did beautifully with her solo part, but it could have just as easily gone to sung, or one of the spots in the trio. while alice had nothing against the group’s maknae and thought she performed well, their main rapper failed to stand out in the performance in her opinion. it wouldn’t have bothered her to have the spotlight if she wasn’t convinced sung could have added a special something.

spotting the older girl, alice approached, carefully fixing a smile onto her face as she did. “hey, sunshine. what do you think of all this?” she gestured around, giving little indication of what exactly this was, but hoped sung would get the picture.

there was something special about sunsets, he always thought. the way the sun would go down, the sky being painted with oranges, pinks, purples, before they would fade into the dark canvas. no many how many you would see, or even sit and watch, he thought it was special each and every time. 

when sung speaks, duri looks upon her for a moment. he giggled softly, “i would always look at the sun with sunglasses on, just because then i couldn’t be told not to look at the sun,” he said, giggling softly once more. he nods his head in agreement at the words, “the sun is such an amazing thing. i always want the chance to get out into the sun, even in the colder months,” he explains himself. perhaps, maybe looking at the sun through sunglasses still wasn’t the best option, but that’s what they were there for, right? 

his smile grows a bit more, “oh! i’ve never thought of it that way. i like that a lot,” he says. “do you think the sun feels lonely sometimes? most of the time, it only has their self during the day… but the moon has the stars at night to talk to.”

“do you think if we wore multiple pairs of sunglasses at once, it would offer more protection and we’d be fine to look at it?” well, thinking about it then, even one pair of sunglasses changed the coloring of the sunset entirely. if they wore too many, it might just be a black dot. “maybe the best way to look at the sun is through pictures after all. i’m not all that knowledgeable on the terms and techniques and all of that, but i love taking them. or, i’ve seen those, um livestreams people do on social media sites where they film eclipses and stuff. i’d bet there’s some livestream out there all the time just to watch the sun rise and set.”

sung didn’t mind the colder months logically. the closer they approached, the more she came to dream of the little things that came along with it: coats, cuddles, warm drinks. at times, the cold could feel dreary, but she still appreciated those months in the long run. “hm, maybe the sun is more introverted than we usually think of it as. the moon has all of these friends they talk to all night, but the sun just likes watching us go about our daily lives. that’d be nice to think, anyway. i wouldn’t want the sun to feel lonely.”

stereotype comeback interview

how would you describe this comeback?

“stereotype is an album about exploring all of candy’s sides, so while we have some lighter sounds, the themes show not only our maturation as a group, but as people, too.”

how are you feeling about this comeback?

“i believe it might be one of my favorite releases we’ve ever had. we were quite busy during the preparation, as we were also competing in crowned at the time, so for it to have turned out this well is a testament to the hardships of the members and our staff.”

what is your favorite part about this comeback?

“everything about the title track, stereotype! i love the sound of it, that i was able to be a part of the choreography creation, and i find the message to be one extremely important for everyone who listens.”

what was the choreography creation process like?

“i still feel like, amongst the incredibly talented veterans that we work with, i’m quite a novice when it comes to creating choreography. it’s a much more intricate art form that it comes across as when you’re looking at the final product. i’m very grateful to have these veterans that guide me along, because i’d love one day to be knowledgable and confident enough to lead candy’s choreography. that would be a dream.”

what is a memorable story from preparations for this comeback?

“the first time i heard stereotype was very memorable for me. at the time, i don’t believe we knew it would be the title, but i really hoped it would. the message hit me personally, as i always hope to be seen as more than just an outer shell. we’re all unique in our own ways, and i love that about humanity. selene’s kami wrote the song, and i believe must have a beautiful uniqueness about her, too.”

do you have any specific hopes for this comeback?

“i hope that those that listen to this album can find a comfort, in one way or another. the songs go over a wide range of emotions, so i hope that they are able to hit the heart of listeners like they have for me.”

what is your favorite song on the album?

“ah, i’ve praised stereotype so much, haven’t i? although, i believe i’ll be there would be my second favorite song. the members sound so beautiful on it, and the lyrics are touching as well. equinox’s suji wrote on that one, and she always has the most beautiful way with music, especially on songs like this.”

if candy doesn’t want to be seen as a stereotype, where do you see your next comeback going towards?

“i'd like if, as candy is now past our rookie stage, we’re able to explore all of our sides. if we’re a die, we’ve shown you our sides one to four, but we’d still like to show our five and six.”

“oh! thank you! ultraviolet’s just released a song recently, too, right?” considering her usual level of knowledge, admitting this was a touch embarrassing, but she went full speed ahead nonetheless, “unfortunately with crowned, i ended up getting a little bit behind on releases from some people. i’m sure it’s great, though. i’ll be sure to look into it once i get home.”

sung sat herself down near jaein -though she might have to move whenever the any stylists came in, for now it’d be much more polite to not have to shout across the room at one another. her feet crossed at the ankles and her hands held onto the sides of the seat as she settled down into her spot. “so, um, are you here for a treatment? i’ve heard there’s a new hair treatment that’s very popular amongst idols lately.”

she’s not sure why she’s even stuck at the salon when gold star won’t change her hair color. jaein’s been going back and forth between different shades of black and brown throughout her whole career, and while she doesn’t really want to bleach her hair, at least that’d give a reason as to why she’s been here for over an hour. 

she’s about ready to get out of there when someone walks into the semi-private area. her assumption is that it’ll be her makeup artist or hair stylist or whomever with good news that she can get out of here but instead, she’s met with an unexpected friendly face. looking up from her phone, she gives joosung a faint smile before looking back down at the screen, ready to message her manager. 

“congrats on your comeback,” she speaks up because with her past encounters with joosung, she’s aware that the candy member will spark up a conversation anyway. might as well get a head start on it.

although it seemed like they had been growing closer recently, sung and minjung hadn’t been much the types to hang out during their regular work schedules for their groups. speaking to one another at a common schedule might not exactly have classed as hanging out, but sung would like to think it was an opportunity to grow their relationship past what invisible boundaries there were before.

“do you like reading?” sudden, the conversation switched, when a thought came to sung’s head and she put no effort into stopping it from coming out from her mouth. that was a sign of comfort, right? “i just recently was able to start a new book, and i quite like it so far. it’s a romance about country folk, but goes into this big conspiracy about the town. i don’t know why, but what you said reminded me of it, and, i dunno, you might like it.”

sung vs vocals

i started thinking a hot minute ago about what sung’s mix btwn her candy counterparts are. and ive gotten to the point that because i think of momo most in regards to sung's dancing, it's only fair i do so with other talents too

so let’s talk about sung’s vocals

in sung’s eyes, she feels like she never had much vocal training period. previous to becoming a trainee, she only sung for herself, and through the mess of her training experiences pre-bc, not much got accomplished. dance was what she could continue on her own. then she joined bc and was scooped into candy shop so quickly that what vocal training she did have wasn’t able to sink in

from candy shop until now, she’s been just riding by on her best guess of how to sing. it’s not based on intentional technique, which makes it inconsistent and presents multiple sonic and health issues that can come with it

both momo and sana don’t seem to have much technique behind them, though sana seems knows her voice a little better so she's more consistent in using the voice that sounds nice than momo is. and isa has a few steps above those two in technique behind her, but she’s still not A Vocalist ykwim

still, it’s a good chunk of range between the two groups, and i lean much closer to momo in headcanon, for the aforementioned reasons. however, to be fair to the jump, sung would be a touch better, saying that sana is a good placeholder or reference for where i think of sung being ‘at’

however, the one strong distinction away from momo, is that i don’t think her vocal tone suits sung as a natural tone

my headcanon for when she goes into the recording studio is that there’s a ‘preference’ for how she sounds. she gets pushed into giving her lines in more cute tones to try to upkeep that part of candy’s image, since sung naturally enjoys being cute otherwise

so i don’t think all of her momo lines are non-momo, but i think that they’re put on voices

and her natural voice is more like sana and isa’s. when they sing naturally, it’s gentle and sweet. and for sung specifically, i think a lot of this is because she’s such a big fan of iu, who has a similar style tone

when it comes to naysayers, i think rather than it being her voice that people say they hate, it’s more ‘i hate that cute thing she does’

or if on an encore she flubs, it’s less of virality for a horrible encore and more like ppl would hear it and go whew not ur best girl that note was real off and move on with their days

def like the rest of them gets shit for lip syncing tho lol and she’s not all that against that they (used to, at least) do it a lot, because she wants to bring the best performance she can every time, and it’s just Facts that her singing is worse when she’s dancing. and dancing is, yk, her Thing

she wants to be a better singer, but doesn’t feel like she has the time to try, so if putting her all into her dance and lip syncing will make for the best performance, she’s fine with that

to expand more on this, sung is excitable. she takes an inch and gives a mile, which can be nice in some situations, but especially as a child it caused her to push potential friends away by being Too Much. as she’s aged, she’s learned to tone this down, but it’s still a work in progress

tries to be optimistic when possible. brains aren’t always that nice, and sung deals with those struggles too. but she’s a big advocate for talking about your feelings and feeling your feelings so they can be expelled and go away healthily. she tries to observe that as well, but she’s not as good at talking about her deepest non happy emotions, and tends to curl inward in those times. every other emotion level Will be shared and worn on her sleeve though, even to strangers lmao

very physically affectionate. she’s not Particularly careful about gender divides with this, and it applies to anyone she considers a friend, which honestly doesn’t take much

she comes from a very traditional and devout catholic family, though, and it’s framed a lot of her ways of thinking. especially when she was younger, she had mindsets like the ‘love you, but not your lifestyle’ and needed to break out of that when she was exposed to more queer people through the industry

she also has decently strong opinions on things like over-drinking, smoking, sleeping around, and can be a little judgmental over those things

for the most part, she doesn’t ever intend to start arguments. she wants to get on with everyone. one of few times she’s full on cold to someone is if they’re an ex of a close friend who treated them badly, because she’s very loyal and ‘if you hate them i hate them’ type of friend

sung was born with a fraternal twin to parents that owned an itty bitty restaurant together. and it’s very bob’s burgers they barely scraped by

but when sung was about ~9, her dad caught some luck, and was always away from home doing business meetings for the shop. then by the time sung was 10, the whole family packed up to start building a chain for their restaurant

sung already struggled making friends before moving, but moving made it a bit worse. she became an idol fan as an escape, and started dancing because of it

when she was 17, her family settled down in seoul as a new permanent location, and sung saw it as her opportunity to be the idol she’d dreamt she could be over the last 6 years of dancing

her luck wouldn’t be the Greatest, though, as she’d fall into a scam for a couple of months

she developed higher standards for checking for scams, started training at a real company, but had to find out through an article online that the company had shut down

her parents wanted her to give up, but up to that point, she’d only auditioned for smaller companies because of the higher success rate. she presented a plan to audition for only the top five companies, and they eventually agreed to that

however, it still took a year of auditioning for bc ent to accept her

and when she was accepted, she didn’t train for long at all before being put on candy shop, then straight to debut

career/image

sung’s public persona isn’t very different from who she is. like with most idols, she has to put on a happy face even when she’s not feeling so hot, but beyond that, who she is, is what the public sees

she’s a sunshine/vitamin archetype

her appeal as an idol according to the public has three main sections. at the top, personality, then second is her looks, and third would be dancing

though she really enjoyed candy shop (as a fan of healthy competitiveness, aka mostly against herself) it introduced her to the public and made her aware that what she’s most proud of (dancing) is less important to the public than her looks. she has always worried people will value her looks for over who she is, so while i think personality wins over looks, i don’t think sung sees it that way, and it’s a sore spot for her

being in candy in general is great for her, tho. she adores the music, the styling, the image, some of the choreo

so far she’s been a bit of a viral darling, and i think that will probably stick around

in her future career, she’ll have focuses mostly on modelling and choreography methinks, so if anyone would like a choreographer, hit sung up

plots

sung’s fave group of all is lily so anything around her being starry eyed. maybe it makes for a nice successful fan connection or your muse doesn’t fit sung’s expectations and it breaks sung’s rose tinted glasses

she’s also a fan of idols and the idol world in general tho! she has favorites, but even if she isn’t a big fan of your group, she probably knows your choreography. could be your muse thinks she’s a bigger fan than she is because of clips of her dancing to their songs, or she genuinely is a big fan, or they do challenge videos together a lot

negative plots are great since they’re not all that common with a sung type! men who’ve done her dirty, people she’s been judgmental to, people who get turned away by her overwhelming and sudden affection/ex friends for similar reasons, or maybe the practice room monster she turns into rubs someone the wrong way at one point

late 2019 to 2022, i have in my head that sung would be dating, but i’ve left what this time looks like as an open plot. so, this could be multiple relationships one after the next, or a three year relationship. if someone wants to take up a current plot, i have this Thot... hear me out. so she’s dating this person for some amount of time and for some reason, they break up real time in-verse and because she felt the most in luv w this person over anyone else she’s dated, it hits hard, and she makes decisions that breach her morals (aka full sleepin w someone when up to this point she’d have been a ‘technical’ virg to appease her own religious rules) this could all be talked about more in depth in dms since this is getting quite long, but it’s the first storyline i have in mind for sung personally

piggybacking off of that with a smaller one would be if somehow someone is close friends with an ex of sung’s and thinks poorly of sung for moving on so quickly, since i think it’s been like... max two weeks for almost every guy she’s been with before she starts dating another
