Romantic Curie waking up to f!sole having a nightmare?
Thank you for the ask!
Curie didn't sleep as much as her friends did.
When Sole's eyes would start to bag and her feet would start to drag and her yawns became more and more frequent, she knew she would soon find herself alone at her chemistry station, waiting for her synth body to catch up so she could enjoy her rest as well. Then, when her eyes would open of their own accord and her mind would begin to spin in patterns, considering the this and that and the other of whatever it was she'd been learning about the day before, she would turn to find her companion still tucked in tight and snoring softly at her side.
Every human appeared to be a bit different in their physiological needs, requiring varying amounts of sleep and food and in differing intervals depending on their workload and their size and their individual metabolism. Some appeared to get little asleep but preferred it that way. Others would would sit on the opposite end of the table, gaining much sleep, and still appearing to be deprived of rest.
Sole got plenty of rest in what was near the average amount of time for a woman her age. She would sleep uninterrupted for 7 hours and 32 minutes on average, and then wake in a short series of starts - turning over, rubbing her eyelids... burrowing into her pillow like some kind of cute little sleepy molerat... and finally blinking her bleary eyes open. With a toss and a huff and only a few grumbles, she would find herself swiftly amongst the living and ready to start the day.
So when Curie awoke only shortly into her own rest cycle to the sound of Sole's struggle, she knew something was wrong.
Her nervous system flooded her with sudden exhilaration as she sat up in their bed, ready to address whatever medical emergency Sole was experiencing. She gripped the other woman's shoulder and rolled her swiftly onto her back, immediately using the hand that wasn't holding herself up to search for the pulse point at her companion's throat.
Rapid, but strong. Good. Reality caught up with her, then, as she realized that Sole was still asleep. She ran a hand over her cheek, taking note of the wetness there. "Sole?" she asked. "Ma cherie, are you alright?"
Sole turned her head abruptly, eyes screwed shut and whimpering with a mind still gone from their world. Curie wasn't sure what the purpose would be as she was doing it, but she felt the pad of her thumb wipe a tear from Sole's cheek.
Pain would have likely woken her. The physical kind, at least. Mental anguish, though? Perhaps a dream?
"Sole," she called. "Sole, it is not real. You... ehm..." Merde. Her language centers had been less than reliable since her switch into the synth body. Her brain seemed to function more smoothly than many of the human counterparts, but was nothing compared to knowing more than 3,000 human languages at inception. "Come to me," she said when the right words wouldn't come. "Sole, come along."
Sole twisted again, but with an air of ease. She settled. For a moment, Curie thought she had fallen back into her slumber.
Then her eyes opened, slowly, blearily. She found Curie hovering over her and a wakefulness seeped into her gaze.
"Curie? Wha-"
"Shh," Curie said. "It was only a dream."
Sole huffed, eyes closing tight. After a moment, her face gathered in towards the center, like she was in pain. Curie was about to hop to her aid when the sob came over the other woman.
"Oh, Sole..."
"It was just so real!"
Curie tsks. "There is nothing to worry about," she assured her, pulling the covers up to Sole's chin before smoothing down her hair. The initial action would offer a more comfortable position for her companion to find her sleep again. She wasn't sure how the arrangement of her hair would help, but it was one of those new instincts she had. "It was only sensory information created by the random electrical activity in your thalamus as you slept, ma cherie. It means nothing, and it was not real."
Sole stopped crying to laugh for some reason. Perhaps an entertaining thought had crossed her mind. Curie didn't dwell on it. At least she wasn't as distraught as she had been. She dropped a kiss to her companion's lips, short and chaste. As she then hovered over her she monitored the woman's breathing. Once slowed satisfactorily, she kissed her again. "TrĂšs bien?"
Sole hummed, smiling. "Oui, ma petite. TrĂšs, trĂšs bien."
Curie brushed her lips against Sole's once more. "Good. You still need about 3 hours and 23 minutes of rest before you will be ready to... err..."
Sole chuckled low under her breath. "Wake up?" She offered.
"Oui," Curie said. "Maintenent... rest, mon coeur."

Platonic Danse and Romantic Curie reacting to nb!sole coming out to them?
Thank you for the prompt!
DANSE
-Would be confused at first. I feel like Danse relies on a lot of black and white. He can see the gray, sure, but it takes some time and a lot of rumination.
-I feel like Danse would be supportive of a Sole who comes out as NB and would even make a point to correct people who use the wrong pronouns for them, whatever their pronouns may be.
-He wouldn't fully get it right away, or maybe ever. Again, he's able to see the gray but it's heavily in the context of the black and white. I think he would struggle to see gender outside of a dichitemous spectrum, no matter how many times Sole tries to invoke the image of a color wheel. (What even is that? It's a thing from what? Art Class?)
-Danse may not fully understand it, but he is supportive of it and accepts that, while he can't fully grasp it, it's a concept that is pivotal to his friend's identity and self image. So, given the opportunity, he defends it to the teeth.
CURIE
-Is so excited to learn something new about the human experience.
-Asks lots of questions and is absolutely fascinated by the visual aids Sole creates for her, describing gender not as a 'this or that' dichotomy, or even as having a super secret third 'non-binary' option.
-Curie's journey to understanding of gender is ongoing and involves both a lot of introspection and observation.
-I think Curie is well poised to grasp the concept, considering she probably has some dissociative issues with her new body anyways. Separating sex from gender is not the leap for her that it is for some people.
-As for how it affects their romantic relationship, Curie and Sole grow closer with this revelation. Sole is relieved to have this piece of her that so many people can't grasp be fully understood by their partner. Curie notices how it deepens their relationship, and realizes over time how central it is to her partner's understanding of themselves and of their place in the world.

Platonic Hancock & Maccready reacting to f!sole getting drunk?
Thanks for the prompt!
HANCOCK
Hancock finds drunk Sole to be a breath of fresh air! Most people get drunk in the commonwealth to forget their troubles or calm their nerves or even as a way to try and cope with what they've been through. He gets it, he's got plenty to drink about and he's not oblivious to the fact that she does too, but it's rare that he encounters someone who drinks just to loosen up and have FUN!
Sole quickly becomes his favorite drinking partner. Everytime she swings through town to sell stuff off to Daisy or turn in and pick up jobs, he tracks her down and asks her if she'll co-host a shindig with him. Hancock can throw a hell of a party, but Sole's carefree attitude puts a certain lightheartedness on the events that the Commonwealth has been lacking for a loooooong time.
MACCREADY
MacCready has never seen such a lightweight. He counts his lucky stars - and Sole's - that he hadn't seen her drunk until several months into their travels bc if she had let her guard down that far when they'd first met he probably would have robbed her blind and taken off before she knew what had hit her. Now he has too much respect for the lady, and for her mission, to take advantage of her that way.
He decides that it's probably not a good idea for them to both get drunk so he slows down and just lets Sole cut loose for once. As he swats off, like, the tenth sleezeball trying to get into her pants it hits him just how much she must trust him. He's lucky to have a friend like her in the world and he's happy he can be there for her.

👍👍👍
Realized after I'd put a couple K into this that you might've meant something different lol. Hope you still enjoy though! I liked these words too much to start over :)
CURIE
-Curie, being an artificial intelligence program gaining sentience in a synthetic body, would be an alarming person to realize you're attracted to. I HC that someone entering into a relationship with Curie in good conscience would need to either be on equal footing with her (as in, another computer program implanted into a synths body and granted sentience) or they would need to both be asexual. I really struggle with consent when it comes to Curie.
-Sole would already be on a path to understanding how they feel about synths when they realize that their feelings for her are more complicated than they had thought. They would chalk it up to chivalry at first, feeling that they need to protect the innocent new human from those who would take advantage of her. Any and all softer ideas about her are discounted immediately as a product of circumstance, or a natural chemical reaction to being the knight to her damsel.
-Curie wouldn't be interested in a relationship at first. She would be too preoccupied with figuring out how the world works and learning how to use a spoon, etc. Sexual intercourse and intimacy are on her radar, but more in an anthropological sense than an emotional one. She doesn't shy away from discussion of it, which has landed her in more than one precarious situation with less than noble people.
-Because Curie is almost constantly being preyed on, Sole tries to stay close. They take her on as many excursions as they can, and when they are unable to they leave her in the trusted hands of one of their other companions. Nick and Hancock are both good at keeping her out of trouble and while Sole doesn't love leaving her in Goodneighbor of all places, Hancock is regarded as being a stickler for consent so leaving her there for short periods feels safe enough.
-Curie finds this to be frustrating and wants to be able to explore on her own. She doesn't appreciate the idea that she needs a babysitter and starts trying to slip them.
-Sole has to have a serious sit down heart to heart with the girl at that point, explaining that she was at risk of being preyed on due to her naivety. When Curie doesn't immediately understand that Sole means sexually she starts asking questions, asking what it is she has to offer anyways? This leads to Sole having to very awkwardly hop around the subject, explaining in as detached a way as possible that she is sexually attractive and easy prey. Curie is alarmed by this. Again, she knows what sex is but in a very clinical sense. She's never thought to imagine herself in that situation until then.
-Sole finds this conversation to be really uncomfortable for a lot of reasons. Chiefly because they are starting to realize just how deeply and intimately and romantically they feel for Curie. Also bc, as stated, Sole in this situation would be asexual and disinterested in the notion entirely.
-Curie would agree to be more on her toes given the circumstances.
-As time goes on Curie would begin to long for intimacy. She would try to talk to people about it, but finds that discussions around sex in the context of her experience make her really uncomfortable and fill her with a sense of dread. She tries to bring this up in conversation - that is, her non-interest in sex itself but desire to be close to someone - and finds herself on the receiving end of a lot of perplexed looks. She tables the idea of pursuing this desire.
-Sole, in the meantime, finds themselves taking Curie on more and more outings that they would otherwise leave her for. She's learned to handle herself in the field more and her company is sorely missed in the event that she IS left behind.
-One day Sole finds Curie sort of wistfully watching a family in the settlement they've stopped in for the night and wonders what she could possibly be upset about. They watch the family too. They feel it. Lonesome.
-That night as they're readying their sleep setup next to Curie and thinking about their lost spouse, they wonder. And they almost don't ask but they feel so close to her already, they think they can probably bring it up without raising the alarm. Sole asks Curie if she'd ever thought about dating. Curie is surprised at the question but doesn't hold back, lamenting her frustration that she cannot find any evidence to validate her desire for a close, intimate, sexless relationship.
-Sole would be absolutely shocked to hear this at first, and would let her rant and ramble for a while before telling her that she's not alone. There are people in the world who aren't interested in sex but still crave the intimacy of companionship. She is delighted by  this information and it would warm Sole's heart to see it, and to know that they helped her feel it. Then, nervously, they would mention that they themselves aren't interested in sex. That they never had been.
-Curie would be surprised at first. Then she would begin peppering them with questions about how they'd managed to reproduce. Sole would talk a little bit about artificial insemination and implantation, trying to answer her questions as accurately as possible while watching her brain swirl to keep up, filling in all the possible scientific details as they went.
-Afterwards they would settle in for the night and Sole would find themselves lying awake. Wondering. After sitting alone with their thoughts for way too long Curie would ask if they ever missed the intimacy of their marriage. Sole would reply honestly, saying that they missed the physicality of it, but that having found companionship with Curie made it easier.
-Curie would be quiet for a while before she would get up, muttering to herself in French. Sole would watch with increasing nerves as she pushed her cot over to theirs, making a double bed. Then she would stand adjacent to them and say. "Just for tonight?"
-Sole would nod and gesture for her to get in bed. She would, and she would immediately curl up to Sole. Sole would carefully wrap their arms around her, and delight when she locks her own arms around them. They had hugged before, but this was different. Better.
-It isn't just for one night.
DANSE
-Serving in the BOS together, a foundation of mutual respect and camaraderie would develop quickly and for a long time that would be all there is between them - at least as far as Danse sees it.
-The first hint of change on his end wouldn’t come until they did something that suddenly inspired his baser instincts. It may be something as straightforward and raunchy as overhearing Sole when they thought they were alone and in the clear to - ahem - relieve some stress, or something as seemingly innocuous as eating a mutfruit. Whatever it is, one thought leads to another and leads to Danse needing to relieve some stress of his own. He feels terrible about it. Guilty. Sole is his subordinate, afterall, and having those thoughts and feelings about his subordinate is unprofessional and due to cause trouble. He would consider putting in the proper paperwork to have Sole placed on a different team, but discounts the idea almost immediately and without much thought as to why. Instead, he resolves to instead keep ahead of his needs and relieve that stress more often, so as to keep the pressure down.
-Finding himself to be sexually attracted to his subordinate would bring up some troubling questions for the Paladin. What’s brought on such sudden desire to engage in sexual relations where he hadn’t really had to deal with it before? Why does he keep having to relieve the pressure so much more frequently? Why is Sole triggering it for him? Is his desire to become involved with someone something he should ignore like he is, or should he consider
dating? Most distressingly, as Paladin, are his options for dating within the Brotherhood limited to those who also hold the rank of Paladin? Anything else would be a conflict of interest.
-Danse would eventually decide that since removing Sole from his team and not seeing them as much is absolutely definitely out of the question, his only choices are to either masturbate furiously 24/7 or attempt to take care of his needs with a civilian. The issue of taking up with a civilian would cause him distress as well, though. He doesn’t feel a sense of desire when he considers it. What he feels is something akin to commandeering rations on behalf of the Brotherhood. A necessary unpleasantry for the sake of the greater good.
-After struggling through several missions with his team wherein he very pointedly has to avoid Sole, he begins to act unlike himself. Grouchy. Impatient. Detached. His team takes notice but none are able to help him through it really. They ultimately chalk it up to the stress of his position and a need to take time off. Danse doesn’t appreciate this accession and works to bottle his stress and frustration up so no one feels the need to go over his head about it. Depending on the Sole, they may or may not have the balls to approach the Paladin themselves about the change in his attitude towards them. They would notice the change, though, because they would have also felt drawn to him. If it’s a f!sole, they would chalk this up to him looking a lot like their late husband and try to keep her distance/be mindful of that. If Sole is the type to confront Danse, they would be met with a suddenly quiet and unsure CO. He would assure them that the distance that they felt between them was in no way a reflection of their performance and that he hadn’t ever intended to make them feel lacking. Internally, Danse would feel embarrassed that his primal need and reaction to it had caused sole distress and would begin to consider taking some time off.
-The next change would come when Sole gets hurt. The moment he finds out Sole has been hurt, whether it happens in the line of duty or not, the fact that he is not in need of a connection with someone but instead in need of connection with Sole would become terribly obvious. He would go to their side at every opportunity during their recovery, taking care to appear mostly when they aren’t awake bc he isn’t sure how to face them yet. He knows that he wants something with them, and it has become clear that it’s more than just a physical something. He craves their companionship in a way that goes deeper than the Brotherhood.
-Sole would be told that the Paladin has been visiting them while they are resting and would try really really hard to catch him in the act, staying awake when they are usually asleep and trying to draw him in.
-One night when they are usually asleep Danse would come to check on them and find them to be awake. Sole would draw the Paladin into conversation, acknowledge his visits, and tell him that they are surprised considering his calculated disinterest in them to that point. Danse would, again, be heartbroken to hear that his attempts to keep Sole off of his mind hadn’t gone unnoticed. When Sole tells him that they had valued his companionship up to the point that he suddenly started holding them at arm’s length, and that the sudden change in him had been confusing and upsetting, Danse would fess up. He wouldn’t be able to stand knowing that he had hurt them without explaining what the problem was.
-Danse would tell them that he’d been visiting because he cared about them very much. He would admit that he had realized that he desired them in a way that went beyond what was permissible within the ranks and that he’d been trying to shut it down. He’d apologize for being unprofessional and putting them in a difficult position and in that moment as a final hail mary he would offer to have them transferred to another team.
-Sole would be frustrated that they couldn’t refuse his offer with a kiss in their condition. They would settle for clutching his hand instead and telling him that they were happy right where they were, despite their CO’s “inappropriate” attention.
-Danse would take this at face value and start trying to work out how he felt about it. He would assume that they truly found the attention to be inappropriate and again feel bad that he can’t have a better handle on his thoughts and feelings. He would try to leave, then, telling them they should get their rest but Sole would stop him and clarify that they meant they were going to jump his bones at every opportunity.
-Danse would have a hard time figuring out how to react to that. He would feel his face heating and would know that he had a duty to refuse them, even to reprimand them, but Sole manages to get out of the bed as he’s trying to find his tongue and, despite his attempts to get them to lay back down, they give him that kiss after all.
PIPER
-At first, Piper is reporting on Sole's unique situation, especially where the institute is involved. She writes out the saga of the Sole survivor in a series of pieces about their journey to find their son. Most of these first pieces have to be researched via interviews, but as she spends more time with them during their time spent in Diamond City, and when she hears about the other adventures the Sole is regularly engaging in, she asks to tag along.
-Piper can handle herself. Usually. She's definitely punched more than her fair share of zealous bar patrons in her time
but the kind of defense she has to play while in Sole's company is a whole other animal. Sole throws themselves in harms way more frequently and enthusiastically than she'd ever seen, and it's a challenge to keep up. She realizes over time that Sole does what they do not only for their child and not only to avenge their spouse, but for the betterment of the world at large.
-Piper develops a crush pretty quick. Sole is so dang capable and noble, she can't help it.
-Sole has a lot of affection for the reporter by their side. She's got a spark that won't be extinguished and a desire to see the world as a better place. She doesn't shy away from a fight, and is companionable in the evenings as Sole cleans their gear and she reads over her notes and works on her latest piece. Sole peeks at the notebook sometimes, but is met with a sharp eye and a snapped You'll see it when it's ready, antsy pants!
-A lot of what she writes is pretty heart wrenching, as their adventures in the commonwealth tend to be, but she's got a knack for highlighting the severity and importance of her stories without embellishing too much, an admirable -and rare- trait in a reporter. The only thing they dislike about her writing, the whole reason they'd like to have a read through of her stories and vetoing power before publishing, is the way she tends to make them out as some sort of hero. It feels dishonest and egotistical.
-They bring this up at one point, but Piper isn't having it. In fact, she takes offense at the idea that she is reporting dishonestly. She tells Sole that she's just stating the facts, and the facts are that Sole is a superhero in the Commonwealth.
-Sole stops reading her articles after that.
-Sole is fighting to take down the band of raiders when it happens. A raider gets a drop on the two and Piper finds herself in the direct path of a tire iron. She raises her hand to block the thing, bracing for the inevitable snap of bone as it lands on her forearm, while the other takes aim at the raiders gut with her pipe pistol. She's just about to pull the trigger when the guy is suddenly tackled by Sole and slammed up against the wall. They finish the guy quickly.
-Sole fusses over her and she has to swat them off, saying she's fine. She would have probably broken a bone but such is life, right? Sole spits some venom before taking out the rest of the raiders and once they're done, they tell her that it's time for her to go back to Diamond City for a while. The wastes are too dangerous. Piper calls bullshit and says they aren't any more or less dangerous than they were before, and her going back to DC wasn't going to change anything. Sole gets frustrated and starts leading her that way anyways.
-Piper can tell that they're not acting like themselves and presses the issue, asking if they're OK or if something happened to make them act all whacked out. Sole gets more and more irritated before they finally spin on her, telling her that they're scared for her, for her safety. They say that they throw themselves into danger so readily because they have nothing to lose and the commonwealth has everything to gain, not because they're some kind of amazing, infallible hero. They say that they didn't realize how warped her view of them was until recently, and that it scared them to think they were some kind of hero to her - that she trusted them so readily with her safety.
-Piper is infuriated. She feels underestimated as a fighter and slighted as a good judge of character. She gives Sole the business and tells them that they can go back to DC if they want, but she's going to go find some people to help out.
-Sole follows her. They go about their business as they had been - helping people and taking out enemies. Piper is happy that Sole has gotten over some of their chivalry and is letting her stick around, but notices that with more difficult tasks, Sole still tends to put themselves between her and the danger. It's annoying, but she usually doesn't say anything. It isn't until they're sharing a beer at a settlement that Piper mentions the change in Sole's fighting - they way they're taking a more defensive stance than they used to.
-Sole grinds their teeth and says they don't have much of a choice. They wouldn't be able to forgive themselves if something happened to her in the field. Piper challenges this, says that it affects the authenticity of her writing. When Sole gets up and walks off without warning, she's offended. She's so offended she has to go give Sole a piece of her mind.
-When she finds Sole and starts to give them the business, Sole gets ahold of the lapels on her jacket and pulls her into a kiss.
-Piper asks Sole what the hell they're doing and Sole says that if the authenticity was going to be compromised either way, they might as well do what they've been wanting to do all along and kiss her on her dumb face.
-She's shocked at first but only because she thought she was a barely tolerated thorn in Sole's side, not a valued companion. Not a potential lover. She's confused and asks for reassurance which Sole gives readily. The protectiveness makes sense all of a sudden. The articles seem
 cringey.
-Ultimately, they decide to take some time out of the field to figure out their feelings for each other
 amongst other things.  ;)
What do you think it would be like to start a relationship with Danse, Piper, and Curie? (Did I do that right? :))
I can definitely write some HC based on this but they're definitely going to bear my own mark. I want to make sure I write what you're looking for so if you don't mind clarifying...
Do you care either way if it's Sole or an oc or are you wanting a /reader type situation?
I'm assuming no preference on gender either?

Do you write for just companions? Or any NPCs? Also, will you be turning on anon asks?
I didn't realize they were off!
NPC's too! Part of what I want to achieve here is learning to write with distinguished voices a little better, so writing for characters I know nothing about is on the table!
I'm gonna run and turn on anon now. 😊

Blog minted Jan 13th 2022! Welcome!
Decided to try my hand at a react blog. Requests are officially open!
Request guidelines:
Doing "all companions react to" posts seems like a good way to get burnt out fast so please specify up to three companions/npcs you'd like for the scenario.
Please specify m! f! nb! Sosu. I tend to default to het relationships bc that's what I'm used to reading and writing but I'd like to get away from that! Let me know what you wanna see.
Specify Romanced, Platonic, or Dealers Choice (or any other dynamic you want!)
This blog is meant to be fun for everyone so if I say or do something problematic please reach out. The world is complicated and I definitely don't know everything but I try 💙
Looking forward to having stuff to post đŸ„°

Piper, Curie and Cait reacting to F!sole breaking her arm?
Thank you for the ask! I never write for these characters so it was super fun!
CAIT
Sole usually had a pretty accurate forecast for how their excursions would go, and planned accordingly.
Yao Guai were spotted near the tracks south of Diamond City, so they’d pack the landmines and extra shotgun shells just in case. Near the water? Extra Rad-X and plenty of mental preparations for endless mirelurk cakes and bloodbug steak. If they were scavving through Lexington, Cait would be forced into the thick, constricting leathers she hated. Things wouldn’t hardly let her raise her arms over her head, let alone swing her bat and she’d always protest, but Sole wouldn’t entertain the idea of letting her forego the extra protection in the feral infested ruins.
What Sole hadn’t quite foreseen, hadn’t quite prepared contingencies for, was falling off a cliff.
Well, not a cliff. Quite the steep hill, though. Rocky, too. Lots of pointy things to crack her head on on the way down.
Cait just managed to still her limbs as she watched Sole tumble down the embankment. When she came to a stop at the bottom, about 30 yards down from where she’d started, Cait realized that she was holding her breath as she watched. She managed to sip in only a slight bit of air before calling out to her companion.
“Oi,” she rasped. She cleared her throat. Managed another breath. Squinted at the still form at the bottom of the hill, eyes peeled for crimson. “Sole,” she tried again. “Ya alright?”
A second floated on. Another. Energy crawled up Cait’s arms, electrifying her to her core as fractured memories flitted through her mind. Sole clearing out the Combat Zone. She and Sole sharing a beer on the roof of the home they shared in Diamond City. The loaded look she’d cast over her shoulder at her just then, right before she’d lost her footing and gone tumbling down down down.
Cait dropped to her rear at the edge of the embankment. She didn’t really have a plan other than to get down there and see if she was even still alive; find out if she’d ever see that look from her again. She realized about halfway down that she should’ve tied a rope or something at the top to help her with a way back up. They’d have to double back to the path, now, putting them out after dark without shelter.
Not that Sole hadn’t prepared for that. She always had a tarp in her pack, just in case they got caught out. It wasn’t much, just big enough to keep them both dry and warm from the wind.
Pebbles dislodged from the terrain under her as she worked her way down, her breath coming ragged. By the time she’d reached the bottom where Sole lay, the other woman had a smattering of dirt and dust caught within the folds of her jacket. That was the first thing she noticed. The second thing she noticed was that Sole was moving. Her eyelids were fluttering against the hair that was lain over her face, her own shallow breaths fluttering the strands.
Measured relief flooded her as she reached for the other woman’s shoulder, rousing her. “Sole.” When she didn’t answer, Cait pushed her onto her back, the anger that was always close at hand bubbling up to her lips. “Sole, I swear ta God if you don’t open yer eyes and look at me right now I’ll-”
Sole’s eyes struggled open, silencing the redhead mid declaration. She wasn’t even sure what she’d had in mind to say as hazel eyes found green, bringing an odd sense of assuredness to the situation. Sole was awake. She hadn’t seen the cliff coming, but she always knew what to do. She’d known what to do when she’d woken up in the future, and she’d known what to do when she’d taken custody of a rowdy, junkie, cage fighting slave, and she would know what to do now.
Sole groaned, muttering colorful curses to herself, and started to move towards sitting, but a sudden jolt of pain fell over her expression as she attempted to put her weight on her arm. She tried to clutch the thing to her chest, but that yielded a similar look along with hiss of discomfort.
“Hold on hold on.” Cait said, helping her to sit up. “That doesn’t look good, love. Better let me have a look.”
Sole winced as Cait pulled the limb towards her, carefully cradling it in her hands. “Fuck. I’ve never broken a bone before but
”
“Oh it’s broken, alright. And I’ve broken enough to know. Have any stimpacks left?”
Sole shook her head. “Gave ‘em all to the settlers at Tempines. Was hoping they’d have more to trade for up at Zimonja, but
”
The women locked gazes before simultaneously peering up the steep embankment. They couldn’t even see Zimonja’s radio tower anymore. Great. Cait looked back first and took in her lover’s expression. Wasn’t often she saw worry behind those eyes. In the past, it had filled her with a sense of hopelessness, like if Sole was worried they were well and truly fucked.
What she felt now was an odd kind of determination. So Sole was tapped. Why did she have to be the one to fix all their problems all the time, anyways? “Your head alright?” she asked.
Sole’s gaze shot back to her and she hesitated only a moment before reaching her good hand up to probe at her hair, her forehead. “I
think so? Why? Am I bleeding?”
“No. I just wanna be sure before we get going.”
Sole shook her head for as long as it took for Cait’s fingers to find themselves in her hair. Then she stilled abruptly as fingertips probed for lumps, bumps, or blood along her scalp. Long lashes fluttered over the hazel eyes watching Cait, making her feel self conscious. No matter what kinds of depraved things they did together, Sole always got bashful at the most tender things.
“We won’t make it before dark, Cait. We should probably try our luck doubling back.”
“Those mooches have used up all yer supplies by now,” Cait explained. “We’re headin’ on to Zimonja.”
“Cait,” Sole began to scold, but Cait silenced her with a hush as she reached into her pack.
“We’ll make it before dark.”
Sole shook her head. “No, honey, there’s no way
” Cait pulled the spare rope from her back and stood to tie it to a nearby tree. “Cait what are you-”
She secured a slipknot in the rope and said “You’ve gotten us out of more than enough sticky situations. It’s about time I earned my keep.” She tied the other end to her belt loop. “I’ll climb up as high as the rope’ll let me, then I’ll need you to tie it ta yerself so I can pull you up. Once you’re up that far we’ll tie off the rope again and I’ll make it another ways up, and then-”
“Holy shit, honey, that’s way too far.”
“It isn’t.”
“It is. You’re gonna get yourself hurt too, and then we’ll really be boned.”
Cait stooped in front of her partner. “Stop it right now, Sole. I wouldn’t be doing this if it couldn’t be done. You know I’m not the kind to be naive. Now, we’re gettin’ you up that hill, and we’re gettin’ you to Zimonja, and we’re getting you that stimpack tonight.”
Sole started to argue but Cait caught her chin, clicking her teeth shut. The women shared a soft kiss, full of promise, before the redhead stood and adjusted her waistband.
“Be careful,” Sole said, eyes wary.
Cait took a running start at the embankment, managing to grab hold of the trunk of a small but sturdy tree about 6 feet up. “O’ course I’ll be careful, love. Precious cargo.”
CURIE
“Mon dieu!” Curie’s exclamation met the sound of shattering glass as the test tube she’d been measuring into hit the floor. She stepped over the mess without a thought as she crossed to the door. “What has happened?”
“I’m alright, ma cherie,” Sole insisted, but the very obviously broken arm clutched to the woman’s chest mingled with the bruising over her cheekbone to tell a different story.
Curie guided the woman to her exam table and helped her to sit. “I did not ask if you were alright, I asked what happened.” She produced a stimpack from the top drawer of her exam table with one hand as the other steadied the broken limb between them. The thing was uncapped quickly, but Sole’s silence had the woman hesitating to move on. “Sole, I have asked you a question.”
“I’m fine,” Sole insisted again. “I just got into a little scuffle, that’s all
” she dipped her head to catch the Doctor’s eye, receiving a disapproving look in return. “You should see the other guy.”
“I am sure I will... Small. Pinch.”
Sole winced, despite the warning. The low gauge needle always offered more than a ‘small’ pinch, but she supposed Curie didn’t necessarily know from experience. Sole had made damn sure she’d never needed one.
The Doctor crossed the room to the supply cabinet, tossing the spent stimpack into the bin to be reoutfitted later. For only having had a body for a couple months, the graceful, delicate way the synth moved was always something to behold. It was hard to look away.
“Well?” Curie asked, rifling in the cabinet.
Sole stiffened; swallowed. “Uh
”
“What was so enraging for you that you had to go and pick a fight, hmm? Isn’t it enough that you come to me in tatters after your missions? You must find a way to destroy yourself in the safety of the Castle as well?”
Enraging. That was
definitely the right word for it. The independent trader that had arrived at the Castle that afternoon needing a wound dressed was definitely that. She’d happened to find herself seated at a table near his at the bar that evening, just close enough to hear as he went on and on about the stronghold’s gullible, innocent new doctor and all the things he thought about making her “check out” for him.
“Just some idiot,” she said. “He
grabbed my ass. Didn’t think I should let it stand, you know?”
Curie glanced over her shoulder at the woman, those big brown concerned eyes doing the work they always did picking away at the walls Sole had erected around herself. One of these days, she knew it was all going to come crashing down. “Oh,” the doctor said. “My
then I’m sorry you were pushed to such lengths.”
Sole nodded. “Thank you, Curie, but I’ll be fine.”
Curie crossed to Sole again, positioning herself perfectly, primly, directly in front of her patient. Her patient couldn’t help but sit up a little straighter in the presence of such propriety. The Doctor scrutinized the swab in her hand as she prepared it with a bottle of alcohol. “What state is the man in? Or shall I expect a cadaver to appear in my clinic instead of a viable patient?”
Sole smiled. She’d had mercy on the man and left him alive, but even so
“I don’t think you’ll need to worry about him,” she said.
Curie lifted the swab to the gash on her companion’s cheekbone. “Slight sting,” she warned.
Sole breathed through the not so slight sting. “Thank you, Curie.”
PIPER
“Alright alright hold on! Sheesh!” Piper pulled open the door to her home with one hand while readying her pipe pistol with the other. She kept a foot just behind the door as she did, only allowing a few inches of space to peer out into the night. “What the hell is so freakin - oh hey Blue.” She opened the door wider, defenses officially down. “What’re you doing ou-OH MY GOD what did you do to your arm?” She ushered the other woman inside quickly, taking in the way Sole had tied her arm into a sling over her shoulder.
Sole huffed as she shuffled in Piper’s door. “I took a fall out in the ruins today. Nothing serious but, uh, I think I broke my arm.”
Piper closed the door and locked it behind her, casually re-stringing the tin can alarm that she kept up while she and Nat were sleeping. “Uh. That sounds serious. Why don’t you use a stimpack?”
Sole sighed, doing an absent little turn around the front room. “I’m out. Percy’s out. Dr Sun is sleeping and won’t answer his fucking door.”
Piper rolled her eyes as she crossed to the kitchen. “What a jerk. Isn’t he supposed to take some sort of oath? If someone needs help he’s gotta do it or he goes to hell
 or something?”
“Yeah,” Sole laughed, watching as Piper opened and shut drawer after drawer in her kitchen. “Or something.”
“Aha!” the reporter said, holding the prize - a coveted stimpack - in her hand. She bumped the drawer she’d found it in closed with her hip before crossing the few steps to her friend and planting it in her hand. “Just what the doctor ordered. Or he would have it he had dragged his happy ass out of bed.”
“Are you sure, Pipes?” She gestured around the overstuffed house. “I’m not taking your last one, am I?”
Piper followed Sole’s eye, giving the room a slightly less scrutinizing look. “Nope. I know there are more
somewhere. And anyways you should probably get the bone set and healing before going to sleep. Heard you can get some real funky shapes going on if you go too long.”
Sole laughed. “I should probably get on it, then. Uhm
 could you
?” She gestured as best she could for Piper to help her with the stimpack, making the other woman jump to attention.
“Oh! Uh, yeah! Sure.” She took the stimpack back from Sole’s hand then turned to regard the slung limb. Sole smiled at the perplexed expression she wore, doing her best to work the jacket off her shoulders with only one good arm. It was proving to be almost as difficult as getting it on there. Piper, again, realized suddenly and a beat too late that she could help and sprung into action just in time to catch the jacket off her friend and drape it over the back of her writing chair. Sole had moved on to untying the sling but Piper batted her hand away, working at the knot with her short, chewed off nails instead. She caught the injured arm just before the weight of it dropped painfully, for which Sole was thankful.
Together, the women fumbled through administering the stimpack in
probably? The right place? Giggling awkwardly and hissing in pain and hushing apologies. Once the medicine was in, though, Sole could feel it working almost immediately. She pulled the arm to her chest again, cradling it in a good position to heal.
“Thanks, Pipes,” she said.
Piper recapped the needle and tossed the spent stimpack onto the desk. “Hey, what are friends for, huh?”
Sole was quiet. It wasn’t totally unlike Sole to be quiet but this was a weird kind of quiet. Piper looked back to the other woman and what she found looking back at her rendered her speechless. That was totally unlike Piper, but what was she supposed to say? With those big, dark eyes watching her in the dim light of her office, the pouted lips she spent probably too much time thinking about parted and slightly moist, her
her friend’s hair falling artfully, beautifully over her face as it so often did.
Piper looked to her desk and picked up the latest issue of Publick Occurences. “Well, as long as you’re here, do you want a sneak peak?” she waggled her eyebrows at the woman.
Sole pulled her bottom lip into her teeth and Piper had to look away. The other woman cleared her throat. “Uhm. No. I think I’ll just head home
”
Disappointment flooded her, sort of unexpectedly. Sure the woman had woken her up in the middle of the night when she had to get up early with Nat the next day and that was definitely annoying
but now she sort of didn’t want her to leave.
Why, though? She should just let the girl get back to her own night. She had healing to do, after all. “Yeah, go get some rest Blue. I’ll uh
”
Sole caught her eye.
“I’ll stop in in the morning to check on you, alright?”
Sole smiled. “Alright... I, uhm... I'd like that."
Piper turned from her friend as a blush rose in her cheeks. "Yeah, blue. I would too."
