I mean, they spent their lives and sacrificed everything for the darkness to end, not expecting to make it through themselves, but daring to hope that one day the force will come to balance and peace will return and there will be Jedi again. Ezra literally sacrificed his life to take out Thrawn and the Chimera. Galen worked to build the entire Rebel Alliance and lost his life fighting for it. Cal spent five years hiding, picking himself up from pieces after surviving order 66 as a small child, and then fought the empire day and night, becoming the most wanted man hunted by the imperials. That moment when Greez tells him “maybe it’s time to settle down.. find a home while there’s still something left” and Cal goes

Each of them thought of themselves as the last surviving Jedi, and didn’t have much hope for ever having a padawan of their own, because, well, Galen had been raised as a sith weapon and was hunted by both Palpatine and Vader, Ezra lost both his masters and jumped to an unknown galaxy, and Cal was hunted by every empire dog, and also bounty hunters and criminal cartels. So when one day it’s just… over, they meet each other and meet Luke and discover that they’re not alone, and that there can be a home and a Jedi school. I mean, the idea isn’t too bad.

Three things here:

1. A cheap ebay clone of young pre-Kenobi-and-Ginn-duel Maul put together by a pack of weirdos legitimately kicked Vader’s ass. Now imagine real Maul with superior experience and force mastery and something to fight for

2. The whole I-hate-myself followed by a stab through the stomach thing looks cool, but the author forgot that Vader’s stomach is not prosthetic. His arms and legs are. His lungs are. That was one of very few spots on Vader’s body where there still was flesh, which makes it much more vulnerable, not durable. A lightsaber wound dealt to a place like that would destroy all the precise tech that keeps him a step away from the brink of death where he constantly stands. It’d kill him faster than Maul (who can force-heal himself) hits the ground

3. The fact that so late in the game Sidious (who was supposedly behind this whole “”reincarnation”” thing) tried to bring Maul in and made him battle Vader, at least to me, looked like he hesitated and thought about switching apprentices again. In other words, Vader did so poorly as a Sith Apprentice (come on, how can you miss a whole rebel base? How can you repeatedly fail in obtaining plans that they stole from you?) that Sidious remembered the way Maul executed his missions and thought about going back to the good old days (remember when Maul tracked and slaughtered the entire control top of Black Sun, “the most powerful force in the universe”? Also when be found a mythical arms dealer in Cog Hive Seven? When he uncovered the locations of Gungan cities on Naboo, including their Sacred Place?). But Vader sort of won, even though I still don’t understand why a lightsaber wound through the stomach suddenly killed Maul-clone but didn’t kill him. Sidious was like, okay, whatever.
