The blog of the foolish mortal in the bowler hat. Female pronouns - I answer to Lissa or "Hey you." This blog is a badly organized hodge podge of my own artwork, few personal details, lots of random silliness and general geeking out over a multitude of subjects.
steven lim: we actually need more money for higher production value so that you guys have the best! and we're bringing back a super expensive show! for you guys, the fans!
See I hate soulmate stories but I keep coming back and picking them apart.
What happens if they die and you never met them? You just - drift on assuming they'll appear and they don't? Does soul mates mean there's no domestic violence? No divorce? Can you be bound to someone on that level and it still fall apart? Do people change and no longer "fit"?
Are there legal statuses for soul mates even before a marriage? Are weddings a thing anymore? Is it ASSUMED when you meet them that's it? There's no courtship? Just find each other and everyone just assumes you now live together?
This also begs the question for the history of the setting. Did diplomatic marriages still happen? Royals marry for political or economical reasons and pretend they are in love - even though it's obvious to everyone they aren't soul bound and "it's never going to work?" Or does society bend and the powerful marry whoever they are soul bound to?
Do people romanticize folks whose soul mate is a different rank and class or is it a bad luck of the draw? Do people find it boring and dull if your soul mate happens to be - your next door neighbor and not someone you had to move heaven and earth to find?
i can never write a soulmates au cause i very quickly stop thinking about romance and start thinking about the sociological implications of a world where soulmates are a confirmed verifiable thing
Sir Terry Pratchett: on writing Good Omens with Neil Gaiman
I love the whole interview but this little snippet most of all:
Terry: “You can usually bet, and I’m sure Neil Gaiman would say the same thing, that, uh, if I go into a bookstore to do a signing and someone presents me with three books, the chances are that one of them is going to be a very battered copy of Good Omens; and it will smell as if it’s been dropped in parsnip soup or something in and it’s gone fluffy and crinkly around the edges and they’ll admit that it’s the fourth copy they’ve bought”.
We get by with the help of our fronds! Sea-riously! A new study by Monterey Bay Aquarium scientists found that denser kelp forests can better handle serious stressors like sweltering seawaters!
The study looked at kelp forests before, during, and after an extreme marine heatwave that hit west coast waters from 2014-2016. It found that denser and more sheltered forests, and the animals living in these forests, fared better against the extreme heat. These persistent forests were also able to keep hungry sea urchins from roaming around the reef and gobbling up the remaining kelp.
Another Aquarium study showed a certain species supports strong kelp forests by snacking on sea urchins — you guessed it — sea otters!
You can dive deeper into this research here!
Healthy kelp forests not only provide homes for a wide range of marine life — they also absorb carbon dioxide — naturally pushing back against climate change (hurray photosynthesis!).
Globally, kelp has been declining for a half-century and warming ocean temperatures present a serious threat to cold-water species like kelp.
Studies like these help us understand what makes kelp forests strong, and how we can implement restoration efforts in areas with less kelp coverage.
