some things i’ve learned while studying in quarantine
drink more water instead of more coffee.
weekly goals are bullshit. set yourself 3-day goals. you’ll be less laid-back.
don’t just mindlessly stare at words. before you start studying, know your approach to it. have a plan.
summarizing the concept in your own words is the key part of taking notes. don’t just copy things down, convert them into your own way of talking, your own vocabulary, no matter how dumb and unprofessional it sounds.
don’t let the “studyblr aesthetic” fool you. studying doesn’t have to be pretty. summaries and notes can be messy as long as they’re comprehensible. you can always rewrite and reorganize them later. (honestly, you better do. and you better keep them.)
don’t throw away the papers you’ve solved your problems in. staple them to the fucking textbook. you need to see them constantly. cause you’ll need reminders of how far you’ve came, when you’re feeling discouraged.
don’t be an armchair analyst for your issues. if you have an idea then act on it.
remember: the exact point where it becomes difficult, is where your growth begins. take a deep breath, and try to focus on the paragraph in front of you.
get off your high horse and understand that if you’re a zero, you won’t go to 100 in a couple of days. first, you’ll need to reach 30, then from 30 to 60, and then from 60 to 90. nobody is 100 everyday. that happens very rarely.
you need to have fun everyday. you need to have peaceful time every single day. even on exam night. especially on exam night, actually. so make sure you’ve studied enough so you can have some time to yourself.
once you’re on a roll and in need of some challenge to stay on track, start writing down your studying hours. tell yourself you’re not allowed to do less than 80% of what you did yesterday. whatever the hell it was, even just one hour. so if yesterday you really studied for like, say 8 hours, today your goal is to study for at least 6 and a half hours. if you can’t keep up with that, make it 70%, or 60%.
be forgiving of yourself. be kind to yourself. even if you bounced back and lost your streak. start again. as slowly as you did before. take your time. it’s okay, you were there once you can get there again.
Went to the farmers market this morning for bread (olive & sourdough) and cheese (black truffled gloucester) and had one of those perfect December moments: crisp cold air; the smell of christmas trees & mulled wine; lots of little dogs in jackets. Now finishing this essay with hot tea & just having one of those days where I feel very thankful for everything.
Only one more exam left! I’ve been trying to catch up on biochemistry and pediatrics. I barely got through pediatrics and didn’t manage to go through all the material so the exam wasn’t that great today.
Clinical biochem is tomorrow and then I’m free! Well only technically ... will be continuing with physiology and pathology introduction topics for USMLE. Then start systems/everything else. Super scary 😅 but I’ll get through that also!
It’s been a hectic few days with exams. I’ve been such a night owl and completely messed up my sleeping schedule. I end up going to bed past 5 AM 😣 Thank God my exams are scheduled in the afternoon though.
My first exam went great, thankfully! I have family medicine tomorrow so I’m going to continue reviewing my notes and write notes for some things I missed.
The day started at 8:49 PM and ended at 4:41 AM December 1st.
Yesterday I studied with my best friend at her place, reviewed family medicine.
Today I did 1 presentation of family medicine in the morning. Went out for a little break. Reviewed that presentation with my best friend over zoom. Then had a motivation study sesh with my other best friend to finish studying everything I could.
I am now barely functioning and going to sleep. Goodnight yall
Hellou guys. I am struggling today to study family medicine... I finished adding data to my excel table for my thesis and sent it to my mentor(s). And since then I’ve been trying to answer these questions for family medicine to prepare for my exam. It’s going slowlyy
Yesterday I had biochem/lab diagnostics and I absolutely love the class. The assistant teaches us what’s important and very practical/clinical. The class is usually only 30 mins to an hour long. Honestly so great.
Okay, so continuing on snacking and studying family med 🤓
Medical School Resources! (and other human biology,physiology,biochemistry-related resources)
Hi Everyone!
Update: I am now officially done with my second year! I know i’ve been MIA on here for a while now - but that’s only because I was drowning in textbooks and assignments! I will be writing a whole other post on what my second year in medical school was like - so watch out for that :)
I, for one, can not just rely on one method of learning. Meaning, I’ll jump from videos, to textbooks, to flashcards. In this post I’m going to list some of my holy grail youtube channels that have helped saved me.
1) Handwritten Tutorials
https://www.youtube.com/user/harpinmartin
Every video in this channel is short, but not so much that you feel like you’re missing out on information. Definitely one to save as a favourite!
2) Armando Hasudungan
https://www.youtube.com/user/armandohasudungan
The best thing about this channel is the fact that there are over 300 videos, covering a wide range of core topics in endocrinology, neurology, physiology and pharmacology. Another pro is the presentation of topics (otherwise considered snooze-worthy) in an artistic manner!
Raise your hand if you’ve ever fallen asleep trying to read about the mechanism of action of opioids, their side effects and contraindications. I know I have. Fret not, for this youtube channel will introduce you to a world where pharmacology is actually interesting.
4) Wendy Riggs
https://www.youtube.com/user/wendogg1
Wendy Riggs is a very down-to-earth professor in Northern California, and she covers a wide range of topics in Anatomy, Physiology and General Biology.
5) Anatomy Zone
https://www.youtube.com/user/TheAnatomyZone
A better way to learn anatomy is to supplement your textbook information with videos from this channel. The explanations and visuals provided are absolute gold.
I hope you all find these channels as helpful as I did!
Today I had my last forensics medicine lecture, it was a really interesting subject. I’m looking forward to the practicals/labs part now!
Had a study session with my friends for family medicine. We quizzed each other and actually made it so much fun. Desserts and candles always make it better.
Currently finishing up anki cards for diabetes and then will watch one physiology video from OnlineMedEd before going to bed ☺️
Happy studying guys ☀️ you can do it ☺️
Also happy thanksgiving!! Hope you guys are staying safe and enjoying the day❣️🦃
#1 prtip if yu just can’t seem t cmplete yur t d list
if you’ve got A Lot™ on your plate and you just can’t cross everything off, no matter how hard you work every day, try switching to a work-oriented to do list instead of a task-oriented one.
but sabrina, what’s the difference? glad you asked!
instead of writing down:
☐write essay
☐revise bio
☐clean room
switch to pomodoros/timeframes:
☐pomodoro 1: work on essay
☐pomodoro 2: bio revision
☐pomodoro 3: clean room
this way, you can adjust your pomodoro length to the time you’ve got left - your first pomodoro can be 50min long, but if you find yourself with 2 unfinished pomodoros and it’s already 9pm, you can switch to 25min, complete them, and still be able to cross them off the list by the end of your day :)
now of course this won’t work as well if you’ve got 5 assignments to turn in by midnight and haven’t started on a single one, but this method is lovely for everyday studying in workload-heavy academic programs where you’ve sometimes got 10+ tasks daily, so i’d recommend this for college/uni students especially!
i’ve just recently switched to this method myself and it’s improved my study-related stress a lot, so i thought i’d share it with you and hopefully help my fellow stressed af students x
I’ve managed to do 1.5 things on my to-do list today. Tomorrow morning I will be going through one more ppt for family medicine and continuing making anki cards.
I managed to add data for my thesis and covered one presentation of family medicine. Continuing on, I need to figure out what the heck the instructions for my public health “essay” is asking me to do.
