Today is the 81st anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising!!

I still remember that day in grad school when I learned about this lady named Vladka Meed, who smuggled explosives into the Ghetto in preparation for the Uprising.

That is my origin story. Learning the deep involvement of women at every level of the Uprising, from armaments to command (enter: Queen Zivia) changed my life, as a Jewish woman, and as a historian, forever. And I'm so SO honored that I get to play a role in ensuring that they take their rightful place in our collective memory.*

Remember, US readers, whenever anyone tells you that the Jews "should have resisted," that "if the Jews had guns more could have been saved," remember, that the Jews DID resist. They DID have guns. And most of the Jews who rose up and fought?--expected to die. The Warsaw Ghetto fighters didn't start the Uprising out of some silly dream that they could "beat" the Nazis, they rose up to make a statement about the dignity of the Jewish people.

As a sidenote, many of the best scholarly treatments of Jewish resistance during the Holocaust have been out of print since the 1970s.

At the climax, the crops are showing worrying signs of failure for the first time ever. Old Lord Summerisle is confronted by his grandson, who says they might need a less symbolic sacrifice. "What, a child sacrifice?" "No...the right kind of adult."

Old Lord Summerisle dies of a heart attack. The crops thrive.

A Wicker Man prequel could be interesting. The original Lord Summerisle reads the Golden Bough and comes up with a neo-pagan religion to get the isle folks under control and create new agriculture practices, and everyone gets way more into it than expected. As an old man, still worshipped as a priest-king, he talks to his grandson (played by whatever child actor we can find who can do a passable Christopher Lee impression.) “You didn’t invent the religion,” the child says in creepy earnest. “You received a revelation.”

I don't know why I spent today thinking about your hypothetical sympathetic female Fagin on Once Upon a Time, but what if she were a composite character? There's a big dramatic moment where we find out her first name is...Nancy!

oh, i love it!

i’ve been calling her storybrooke self jenny, as an oliver and company reference, but that would be a fun reveal for her dickensian timeline self. and i think it would be culturally healing for a nancy figure to get to be a funny lady who just happens to have a good heart *and* sticky fingers, instead of too tragic.

also, very funny potential to blend that into her relationship with the kids. she is not *actively* trying to make them criminals, she doesn’t want any of them to get hurt, but...you know, nice things are nice!

actually, her dynamic with oliver would be quite like nancy’s in the book, i imagine - the other kids are tough, they can take care of themselves just like she did when she was their age, so she doesn’t worry about them too much, but oliver is just a sweet baby who never should have been caught up in all this, so she tries to keep the worst away from him.

i do still think she and sikes are better off as toxic frenemies than romantically involved, though. the regina george and gretchen wieners of the victorian underground.
