US people with disabilities in the supplemental security income (SSI) program can't have a penny over $2K in their bank account at any time in order to keep their benefits.

You know this economy. That amount is completely unlivable & makes it hard for people with disability to save for the future or have a safety net for emergencies.

A new bill would raise the max to $10K (or $20K for married couples). It would make a world of difference.

Dyscalculia is a humiliating disability to have, because western culture seems to laude being skilled at math as a one to one equivalent of being intelligent. This association is so strong that people assume that having skills in other areas means that you must also have roughly equivalent ability in mathematics, because “smart people are good at math”. Then there are people who believe that math is the Supreme Skillset that supersedes all others, and that you cannot be intelligent unless you are mathematically skilled, regardless of any other skills that you may possess.

I can write applications in JavaScript, recall obscure facts about animals and history, and analyze a work of literature academically, but because I need a calculator to do some “simple” equations and sometimes take a split second longer to read an analogue clock, there is a group of people who would write me off as an idiot from the jump.

It's possible to care about more than one group of people at a time, but obviously reactionaries never feel the need to do that. For the love of god if your native language is different from the majority language of the country you’re living in don’t raise your baby speaking the local language. Either have each parent speak to them in a different language or only speak your native language at home. The kid will be okay. Get your native language in their head. You may think you’re helping them in the long term giving them the local language but no. When they’re an adult they’ll wonder why you never taught them your language. They can and will learn the local language in school. They’ll be okay. Produce more bilingual children. They are good for society.

i understand that this is the "disabled people know our own limitations" website, but ime, if you are the kind of disabled where everyone around you knows about it and has known you as a weak, incompetent, subhuman creature your entire life: it is important to learn how to make the distinction between "i can't" and "i'm not allowed to."

"i can't hold fragile things without breaking them" vs "my housemates won't let me do dishes anymore."

"i can't manage my own finances" vs "my family won't let me make my own financial decisions"

"i can't ever learn how to drive" vs "the state has decided that people with my disability cannot be allowed to drive."

also "what would need to happen for it to be possible for me to be able to do dishes?" or "what would i need if i were to ever move out?" or "what kinds of supports would i need if i did try volunteering?"

even if the answer to these you come away with is "i actually cannot do the thing, no matter what supports or accommodations i'm given" that's fine! they're still useful questions to ask!

I feel like what people don't get about this whole anti-masculinity is they get hurt by men and then this confirms that men are bad but here's the thing: yeah there are men out there that will hurt you. that will be violent towards you.

Women hold the exact same capacity to be violent and abusive.

no one is denying the feelings that people that have been hurt by men. but I feel the anguish comes from this quest to find a safe type of people that will not hurt them and that they can always trust forever. and if men are dangerous, that means the "opposite" of men must be safe: women.

Unfortunately this not only is anti-masc gender essentialist bullshit, but you are so much more likely to get hurt again if you go around thinking no woman will ever hurt you like he did. That this sort of behaviour can't possibly come from a woman, because she gets it and there's an intrinsically good quality about her by virtue of being female.

But it's not true. You can still get hurt. What's more, you have that capacity for pain and violence, too. Not only are women fully capable of hurting each other, they're capable of hurting men as well.
