I have a post brewing about how Khan in ST:ID doesn't actually do anything villainous on-screen but I probably should shut up about AOS for a while

you know watching this with Trek in my head makes it even more potent how framing is
In Star Wars, there are sentient droids who are very explicitly property. They get bought and sold. Their suffering is not abstract ("it seems we are made to suffer") and yet many viewers don't notice the grave injustice, because the human characters in the movie don't (until the prequels, when Anakin points it out).
There is no meaningful distinction between C3P0 and Data, and yet viewers immediately understand in The Measure of a Man that Data becoming property would be a grave injustice. This isn't me saying that The Measure of a Man is better (I believe the exact reverse), its me musing about the importance of being an active participant in the story you're being told
God y'all have got me watching Star Wars now and I forgot how damn good these movies are. (This is a lie. I never forget. I am always 5% thinking about Star Wars)
I love Luke's floppy hair so much. And he's so deeply uncool 😭 I'm such a sucker for these scifi protagonists who are actually really lame, this is why Kirk is my favorite captain

ok ok ok one more thing (I don't know why I even wrote that we all know it's probably a lie)
I would LOVE to see Han and Spock try to out-lie each other like "the millennium falcon is the fastest ship in the galaxy buddy" "actually the odds of making it through an imperial barricade is 1392.3 to one, captain" just STOP LYING 😭

Obi-Wan is such an asshole, he's such a good character. "a more wretched hive of scum and villianry" maybe they're just trying to get by, obi!! maybe it's a tough universe out there!!! stop being a dick!! seriously i would die for Alec Guinness what a fantastic performance

So I know this blog tracks towards the academic with all my long posts but that is just how my brain works (and I don't have enough math to work on right now). But I just want to be extremely clear: my favorite Star Trek content is the shamelessly, unabashedly sexy and funny stuff and thank all of you out here in the tumblr mines who are posting it

DS9 True Facts
Andy Robinson said when Garak first met Bashir “he just wanted to have sex with him,” Alexander Siddig said when Bashir met Garak “it was a love story,” and the two performed slash fanfiction together
Terry Farrell and Nana Visitor said forget Dax/Worf and Kira/Odo, Kira and Dax should have been the show’s “main romantic couple”
René Auberjonois and Armin Shimerman said the relationship between Odo and Quark was “sexual” and that they were “the best romantic couple on TV.” They made out in their final scene together in an outtake
Casey Biggs and Jeffrey Combs heavily implied that Damar and Weyoun had sex with each other and often referred to them as a married couple, not to mention they played the Romeo and Juliet balcony scene together
If you are a slash shipper, remember they are, too!

To flesh this out a bit and clarify some points. First, I forgot something in the theme section:
❌ Christian theology, from the immaculate birth to the holy trinity (the father, the son and the holy Force)
Now, when I say Star Wars I am only talking about the Lucas films. And I cite here the things that make Star Wars unique, that a film would need to be "like" Star Wars, imo. For instance, the presence of space battles and mentor figures isn't unique to Star Wars.
JJ did crib some narrative devices from Lucas, like the metaphorical planets. Lucas (being, imo, much more talented) goes way further with this, you can get the entire story of Star Wars solely through the planetary visuals.
The thing is that Star Wars is so incredibly weird and specific that I don't think there's much that's "like" it at all, other than THX 1138. Star Wars is this cyclical religious epic (consider that in 6 the restoration of the Republic loops directly back into 1, when the Republic is "strong"). There is some thematic flirtation with this sort of thing in Star Trek, but there's no sense of cyclical history. And any movie that doesn't discuss slavery can't be all that much like Star Wars (consider that the first thing we see Luke do is buy and sell sentient droids at a market, Anakin is a slave).
Thematically, I think 2009 shares more with Starship Troopers:

Someone said to me "Star Trek (2009) is trying to be Star Wars" and I have been thinking about it since I read it so let's go, lesbians
First of all my initial response was "there is no evidence of that intent in the text" to which I was cited some JJ interview, about which I do not care. What I care about is the movie. So let's break down all the ways that a movie could be "like Star Wars" and whether Star Trek (2009) checks those boxes. Fun!
Aesthetically
❌ wipe transitions ❌ opening text crawl ❌ prominent perspective lines (i.e. the trench run) ❌ prosthetics and/or masks ❌ focus on the form of weapons (laser sword versus blaster, lightsaber color) ❌ fairy tale imagery (the princess, the old mage, the evil Emperor) ❌/ ✔️ "tribal cultures" (these do appear in ST:ID) ✔️ metaphorically uniform planets (Delta Vega, Nibiru)
Thematically
❌ machine/droid intelligence/sentience ❌ the existence and role of God (the Force, in Star Wars) ❌ slavery and/or human smuggling ❌ strong focus on the economy, in general (our only hint is Kirk giving away his bike) ❌ endorsement of revolutionary politics ❌ emphasis on information storage and transfer, particularly through physical mediums ❌ a "star war" (Nero is a rogue agent, ST:ID is an inter-Starfleet conflict) ✔️ the interplay of liberal democracy and fascism ✔️ emphasis on visual communication ✔️ a "planet killer" weapon
Insofar as Star Trek (2009) is similar to Star Wars, it's that Kirk starts the film in Luke-like position, but instead of running off to join a rebellion, he goes through with his plan to enter the Imperial Academy and become a pilot. The film diverges from there.
