When improving on your art, how do you beat perfectionism?

I think aiming for perfection is shooting yourself in the foot (and If I ever meant that in my previous replies, I apologize) The trick is to stop overthinking. Think of it that way: you're building a house and each day you're practicing, you're adding a new brick.

Have fun, study. Learn a new thing every day, add a new brick to your home and stop thinking about "perfection" think more of "mastering your craft" little by little. It feels the same but to me, there's a nuance.

🎨🖌️Don't rush yourself. We all got our own speed, so don't disrupt your pace. Did I mention you're supposed to have fun ? What good would it be, to have already crashed and burned before you started having fun.

Always. But at the end of the day if you don't start somewhere, you'll never improve. Put some music, or a nice video essay and don't let the blank page intimidate you 🧿

Omg here's me resurrecting my 15yo tumblr to get all up in your ask box... hello i have been pinning your spuffy art on pinterest assuming it is probably a decade old because buffy fanart is basically nonexistant but it's CURRENT and you're CURRENT I'm so happy you exist! Re: fanfics - where are you reading? You've found EF, right? Because most of the good spuffy fics on ao3 are actually from EF and it took me forever to find it so lmk if you haven't and I will send you a link!

lmao thank you, yes this is very current. I may be behind the times I don't know, I guess I'm finally more confident to draw my old favs. So all the things I couldn't draw before, well, now I'm doing just that.

I do have an EF account but I'm just a passive lurker; there are so many spuffy stories to read and so little time. Also I'm very changeable, my hyperfixations at the moment fluctuate like the stock market haha. One minute it's all Buffy, two days later it's Arcane. The day after, time to rewatch HxH. I just never know what new (or old obsession) will grasp my arm.

I honestly couldn't tell you which are my favs, I didn't get the chance to read all the fic recommendations yet I've been very busy distracted. But if you have all time favourites, you can send me Ao3 links, I'll save them for later !🔮

Question: can you think of which art style you’d like to pursue before improving in your fundamentals? Like let’s say you love cartoony art and then you improve on the human anatomy before you can develop the style your aiming for. If that makes sense.

Okay I'll try to give a proper answer. I can only talk about my experience, my style traveled. That's what I tell my friends, it traveled. It went to hyper-realistic. Didn't work. Cartoony ? Not completely satisfied. Anime ? I was shamed (and told anime wasn't real art) I was on a rollercoaster ride for a long time and every single time it didn't work for two reasons : my fundementals were clunky, not strong enough and there comes a point where bullshitting your way through doesn't work. Second reason is that I was trying to do something that I didn't like, just for the sake of fitting in.

Learn basics, style will follow. Style will be constructed. Again it all depends of your inspirations, your favourite artists, your influences.

Maybe showing you would be more telling.

And these are a few minuscule examples I could think of right now, but I could also tell you about how Leyendecker and Norman Rockwell have been huge inspo recently. What I mean is, as an artist, there's this constant growth/evolution (I'm trying to acquire more knowledge and have a more solid fundation) but there are also movies I watch, TV shows that will catch my attention, artists I will see online and kinda go "Hey, that thing is cool. Let's add that into my cart. We'll try to include that cool element in our next art." Think yourself as a sponge, absorbing all the things you like, and making it your own.

I've wanted to draw in a super hyper realistic way when I was younger, that was the pinnacle of artistry but now I prefer simpler stuff. The reverse can also happen, I don't believe it's a regression, I've seen artist master their style to the point that it looks easy but there's so much calculation behind.

Again I don't know if I answered your question, but my conclusion is you don't neglect fundamentals and enjoy exploring, experimenting. That's part of the journey.
