Earl Sweatshirt feat. Vince Staples & Casey Veggies - Hive
Excellence in the darkness with director Hiro Murai (Chum). Sweatshirt may be the hardest act to follow, but Vince Staples offers solid contrast and stands tall.

UPDATE:  Earl Sweatshirt and Vince Staples perform “HIVE" live in a garage…

This is hands down in my top 5 for my Producers Series. Matthew Herbert is an artist, producer I have the utmost respect for. He's one of the more original and insanely creative producers out there, ever, in the history of music. His style can't be copied, at least not easily. To describe his style, it's not just dance or electronica. His production really is a work of art. And his progression from album to album shows more growth than any other producer I've seen.  I got into Herbert's music a little late, as a friend of mine introduced me to his 2001 LP "Bodily Functions". I was impressed not only by his glitchy left field style of dance music, but how jazzy, soulful and overall beautiful it was. I had never heard anyone program their drums/percussion like he did. And the sounds he used, sampled and chopped, tripped me out. I had never heard anything like that and it was truly refreshing. Herbert really stepped his game up with 2006's "Scale", a record that not only used a full scale orchestra, but everything from coffins, to gas pumps and breakfast cereal for sounds. He also had a series of videos where he would try to find new sounds for his drums by recording them in shallow ocean water, 2000 feet in a hot air balloon and in a cave. That's dedication to sound and maybe just a little crazy, but who else does that? Herbert does. This mix comes just weeks after he released a digital only box set of his work under "Herbert". 130 tracks from his solo albums and indie label singles. I had to get it.  Aside from this box set, there's all of Herbert's remixes, his big band projects, his outside production work, all of which you'll get to hear in this mix. You'll also hear in many of these songs, vocals from his long time contributor, wife and former temporary Bay Area resident(and club DJ) Dani Siciliano, who has one of the loveliest voices ever. Next week is part two as one show cannot do this man's insane discography justice. Enjoy.
