In your recent post about the Darklina ship, you mentioned that you felt that the characters in the Shadow and Bone trilogy fell flat. I feel like in the years between Shadow and Bone and Six of Crows Leigh's writing really improved. Do you think that the ships and characters in Six of Crows also fell flat or do you like them better?

hello anon! I’m glad you brought this up because I 100% agree! I guess part of the reason why shadow and bone fell so flat to me is because I read six of crows before lol. I remember reading six of crows (the first grishaverse book I read) and being absolutely amazed by the writing, the plot, the characters. I was and still am in love with the way she writes now, especially in six of crows. And then I read shadow and bone, and... well, I expected a little too much. Which is completely okay! I agree, anon, Leigh Bardugo’s writing has improved so much and I love it. The characters in six of crows are complex and so easy to fall in love with. And I’m pretty much a sucker for kanej :) I’m just so soft for the way Inej makes Kaz want to be a better person 🥺. I’m not sure I would credit that to her improving her writing though? Since I’ve pretty much been a nikolai stan since day one (other than his one-sided relationship with alina, but i mean, i understand it).

darklina

hehe i actually reblogged a post a couple of weeks ago, so if you saw that you probably know my thoughts on darklina... anyway

I just really, really dislike this ship. The only way I could ever be okay with it is if we threw canon completely out the window and created a completely new darkling character that’s cardan greenbriar-esque (love him)- aka, acts like a violent, dangerous person BUT is actually a soft teddy bear in love with a girl who he would do anything for and releases poor mortals secretly so they can escape their horrible lives under his torturous brother. I feel the need to point out that this is NOT the darkling- i mean, it’s actually kind of the opposite. He acted like a soft teddy bear (well, not really, more like a nice, unassuming dude), but is actually a violent dangerous person who did so many bad things I can’t even count them.

Firstly, he’s just a horrible person. Like, the worst. He hurts people and kills people without remorse, even the ones closest to him. I mean, just look at his mother, look at nikolai, look at alina.

And then to go a step further and romanticize alina and the darkling’s relationship? That relationship was twisted I mean he emotionally, physically, and mentally abused her throughout all three books, and if zoya thinks he’s horrible, I have to think he’s horrible.

I guess I should also say I don’t ship mal and alina- I don’t really ship anyone with anyone, since all the characters (minus nikolai and zoya at the end!) fell a little flat to me. That being said, compared to the Darkling, the guy seems alright. Sure, mal might be super annoying and stupid at times, but at least he didn’t, oh i don’t know, completely ruin Alina’s whole freaking life and murder a bunch of people?? Anyway I just think that darklina is a super toxic ship and I hope they don’t romanticize it in the upcoming show.

I guess I would be open to a redemption arc, but this guy is gonna have to do a whole lot to repent for his sins.

King of Scars spoilers below (for anyone who hasn’t read it yet)

Of course, the darkling’s storyline isn’t over thanks to the wonderful ending of King of Scars, so maybe Leigh Bardugo will give him a redemption arc. It would take a whole lot though bc literally no one will trust him after what he’s done... and also if he does get a redemption arc, I’d rather him not drag alina into the mess. She’s living her peaceful life somewhere in the woods (I think lol it’s been some time since I’ve last read the series).

Anyway, this is getting terribly long so I’ll just end this here lol basically, darklina is definitely a notp for me
