To me it's more interesting watching an artist (dancer/singer/actor -entertainment/performing artist) get so involved in their work that they completely lose themselves than watch someone who is extremely tactful and has everything planned out. If it doesn't surprise you, it'll be harder to surprise the audience. I try to be a combination of tactful and leave some room for improv and to feel. Nothing is better than feeling in the moment.
