I managed to stumble upon some scans of Vootie, a cartoonist’s APA (amateur press association) from the 70′s with a focus on “funny animal” art - which would lay the groundwork of what would one day become the furry fandom. It’s a little hit or miss for me, but as someone who really enjoys the underground comix artstyle and zines in general, it’s still been enjoyable to traipse through.
My favorite pieces found in my wanderings were done by cartoonist Tom Foster and collaborators, Dan Steffan and K. Fletcher, for Vootie’s 10th issue, including its cover. Information is a little sparse, but I believe it’s the same Tom Foster who made Strawberry Funnies, who also seems to have quite a large body of work made throughout his home of Memphis, ranging from album covers to courtroom art.
I find something especially endearing about the rabbit painting a rabbit’s foot. How often is art a reflection of our desires, and an attempt to actualize what we feel we’re missing in reality? I find it to be a very pure statement, looking at it in this way. I can also appreciate it at it’s simplest, which I think shows the layers of a good cartoon: an extremely effective and amusing gag.
