tbh idk why no one wants to say it but ucla really needs to get an entirely new coaching staff including head coach. with the talent they have they should not be scoring low 197s or worse all season. why are chae and nia, two of the best vaulters in the country, not doing 10.0 vaults? their beam has obviously been a mess all season and clearly they're lacking wrt mental preparation but the routine construction itself is also bad. even their floor has looked a lot worse since wieber left.
honestly i think there was just too much stacked against them this season that i’m a little hesitant to pin it all on the coaches. i’m willing to keep coach waller (even tho he has made questionable choices but like so did miss val) for another year or so but i would like to see different coaches for the events you mentioned. the combo of them training later than most teams, not having enough depth to cover for injuries, losing top-rated freshman to deferment, and bad routine construction/coaching reallllly just shaped up to.. well this season lmao. i do think there seems to be a problem with their mental preparation bc we’ve seen that girls like sakti and nia, who are normally pretty solid, have consistency issues and that is either on them (no judgment it’s been the shittiest year ever lmao) or on the coaches (yes judgment because it’s their jobs to make sure their routine construction makes them feel confident enough to hit 100% of the time). and lbr losing jo was always going to be the biggest impact on our scores just based on how she really turned floor around when she started coaching. beam and vault have always been a struggle and we just need better coaches there lmao.
anyway if we have a change in coaches, or even just really good changes in routine construction, i think we’re gonna be just fine next year considering we’ll be having malabuyo (just pray she’s in one piece ha), chiles (!!), padurariu (!), moors (!!!!!!!!!), emily lee, alexis jeffrey, etc. yeah that’s a lot of pressure on the freshmen and obviously they’ll need time to adjust, so if we have issues next season i wouldn’t be super concerned either tbh. it can be hard to watch as fans bc we’ve been used to the likes of kyla, peng, kate, etc.. but growing pains i guess.

ok but this needed to happen so that kyla could realise that it’s her mission to save ucla gymnastics. you see this as a loss and i see it as the first step in kyla ross’ coaching origin story
