I love gifs. In the digital world, gifs feel like a perfect cross of photo and video. Sadly, it seems there has been less innovation with the format than with video. Back in 2014 Imgur did a thing to upgrade gifs by converting them to video then display them back as gifs. Allowing gifs to be larger and higher quality. But, thats just one platform and I don't feel like thats the future.
I'm hesitant to say this but now with TikTok, Instagram reels, and YouTube shorts it feels a little bit like the evolution of gif. This time with sound.
But who really knows. Tumblr might be working on something amazing right now.

Photo or Video? Thoughts.
I have spent significant time deciding whether photo or video is a superior format. On one hand, you receive a lot more information out of one video. Subjects interact with their environment and sounds. There's so much more emotion in a video. On the other hand, photography is cleaner and easier to work with. Photos can be easily archived/indexed and rendered into a physical format. You can go through a lot more photos in the same amount of time you could with video. Historically, photos have stood the test of time. From my perspective the question really is on preservation. Do you want to archive for a short period of time or long period of time. Because that's the whole point of either format. It's to document a moment, emotion, or experience.
