I thought this at Sword/Shield launch, but while Applin (and its line) are kinda fun/interesting, I actually don’t find any of them particularly cute or appealing. 

Sticking a pin in this one so I can maybe get back to it if I decide I care enough to voice my nitpicking about the designs. Unless I change my mind about them later? Who knows. Either way I don’t feel like I have the energy to complain about this in particular right now, so I’m skipping past it to go onto Pokemon I actually wanna rank.

Next up on my clearly objective personal cutest pokemon ranking:

Anorith! 

I don’t think I’ve thought about him very much, but he’s actually really cute! I like him. 

The eyes are cute and simple, and despite having pincers, he looks very friendly. 

He’s 2′04″ and 27.6 lbs, so a little bigger than expected, but still manageable and comfortable to hold. 

Nice.

Additionally, and I’m not sure if it’s just me or not, but-- doesn’t he give such “chill bro” vibes? I feel like I could just lay down with him and chill for hours. Give him some pets and relax. I like that. 

Armaldo. He’s a tough boy, but not very cute. Maybe with a few little modifications he could be, though. :)

I almost ranked him above Abra, but I stared at Ambipom’s face for a solid 10 seconds and decided I couldn’t place him above that. 

I might have to reevaluate the ranking later, but that’ll come for another time :’)

Taking a little break from my personal ranking to rant about the new Pokemon announcements. 

I really loved playing Pokemon Diamond when I was younger. I still think to this day that it’s probably my favorite generation (though there’s certainly issues, for example the shortage of fire-types...), and I’ve been hoping for a DPP remake for ages. Had someone asked me before the trailers if I’d be ok with a Sinnoh game looking chibi, I probably would’ve been surprised since it’s not at all how I’d envisioned a Sinnoh remake previously, but I probably would’ve said “yeah, sure”. 

But... this? 

Why is it so awkward to look at? Why are her arms so awkwardly hanging out of her body?

Like... I’m probably I’m going to come around to this at some point. And regardless of the overworld appearance, the in-battle models (for the humans at least, still not sure about how the pokemon are looking...) are great, and the mechanics and familiarity of this generation will still be in full force, so even if I can’t get over the overworld models, there’s still enough parts of the game that are in touch with the original that I’ll be able to enjoy it. 

But for god’s sake. There’s got to have been a chibi style that was better than what they went with. How hard is it to make a chibi style look “cute” and not like something from “Lego Girls”? 

I did a quick google search of “chibi game models” and found this:

This is even so much better!! Giving them these kinds of proportions and slapping on Pokemon art style would’ve been great.

Let’s Go style would even have been fantastic. 

But no, that’s not what we got. I understand that “oh, technically it’s being faithful to the original because the in-game sprites had the same proportions”, but... eugh. It’s not really that cute, it’s mostly awkward. I really, really hope it grows on me. 

Anyways...

Legends: Arceus, on the other hand, looks fantastic! The style is certainly a lot closer to what I would’ve expected for a Sinnoh remake, but even without it scratching that itch, I have high hopes for the gameplay. The methods of catching and fighting with pokemon are, obviously, exciting and a much-needed breath of fresh air to the formula. Maybe if it goes well, it’ll even stick for future games. Maybe, maybe not. We’ll see.

The Feudal Japan-esque aesthetics are also lovely. Seeing “Dawn” (or rather, ancestor-Dawn...) in more traditional clothing did surprise/amuse me a bit at first, but it does look pretty good. I do hope that it doesn’t all have the colors seen in the trailer and in the image above, and there’s more varied landscapes than is implied thus far, else it will be... visually boring. Still, lots of potential. 

The story (?) also seems exciting, or at least has potential. I love lore, much like the lore in the books around the original DPP, and if this goes well, it’ll be chock-full of it. When I played Diamond and got a (cheat coded-in) Azure Flute, going back to the Hall of Origin on pure whim and the sudden excitement of the Arceus sequence was thrilling. I hope that maybe something comparably intriguing/exciting, or maybe closer to Girantina’s sequence in Platinum, happens here.

I also initially thought that the pokeballs were just normal, modern pokeballs, and was disappointed, thinking “hey, in a game set in more ancient times, wouldn’t it make sense to have, for example, Apricorn-made pokeballs?” But then I noticed on my second viewing that yes, indeed, they’ve clearly got a less “modern” design.

I can dig it. 

Finally, the “starters” (?) seen in the trailer were certainly a surprise, but not an unwelcome one. 

I’m probably going Cyndaquil, but Oshawott is a great second choice. I dunno. 

Either way, I just hope that the Chingling seen in the background of the trailer at 1:05 isn’t indicative of the final game. I sincerely hope it gets the time, polishing, and effort it desperately needs, so that this game doesn’t go from high expectations to ending up a massive disappointment. It would be great to reward GameFreak for making creative decisions like these going forward, but if it ends up a visually bland, slow, constantly-dropping-in-framerate mess....... 

I do hope the overall positive reception that trailer has had so far will encourage GameFreak to really try to make it the amazing game that everyone’s hoping it’ll be.

Mareep!!

Baby! Baby!! Baby!!!

I love this thing. Annoyingly hard to pet, but if you have shock-proof gloves (which I’d surely invest in), or if you only pet its wool-free areas, it should be good. 

Design-wise, this is PEAK earlier-pokemon design. Absolutely fantastic. Cute without trying so hard to be it turns forced. Great color scheme. Look at those eyes!!! You don’t get those kinds of eyes as often anymore. It’s a shame. It’s so cute. 

It’s 2′00″ and 17.2 lbs, meaning it’s so small. It’s so small. You look at it and think, “Oh, it’s basically sheep-sized,” but no. It’s baby sheep-sized. 

I love this baby. Mareep is so good. 

Flaaffy is also cute!!! Honestly though this picture isn’t very flattering though, so I’m gonna find a better one...

That’s better. 

It’s a solid design for sure. Much like Mareep, it’s got good design sense and its eyes are cute. I also quite like pink, so bonus points for that.

It’s 2′07″ and 29.3 lbs, so barely any larger. Still very manageable a size. (Though that does beg the question, is it standing height or on all fours? What about Mareep’s?) 

Additionally, there’s a lot more pettable space here (According to Marriam-Webster, it is indeed a word). Its bipedal-ness can be a little off-putting if you look at it wrong, but that’s fine. It’s still very cute and floofy. 

Ampharos. 

She’s bald now. :’)

I don’t know why the transition is so large, but the size progression went: 

2′00″ 17.2 lbs > 2′07″ 29.3 lbs > 4′07″ 135.6 lbs. 

What happened to you, Ampharos? What made you loose all your wool, gain two feet’s worth of height, and (quick calculations) almost quintuple (5x) your weight?? 

Jokes aside, it’s still plenty cute, though it’s not really... um... sheep-like anymore. 

Apparently its tail can act as a light that can be seen from space, so, this is the baby to get lost with. Strength technically isn’t relevant to the rankings at all, but it is a pretty decent pokemon utility-wise. 

One last note-- 

Its mega looks fucking ridiculous.

Foongus is up next.

I mean... I’d be lying if I said I didn’t find it cute at all, so it’s going on the list. Still, other than that, there’s... not much going on here. I guess ultimately, its biggest bane is how... uninteresting it is. 

Ok, yeah, it’s a fungus pokemon whose head looks like a pokeball. You go to grab a pokeball in the field and surprise, it’s actually a Foongus!

...Yay... cool...

Its only other saving grace is that it’s only 0′08″ and 2.2 lbs. With it being that small, I’d like to pick it up and hold it in my hand and pat it on its weird fake-pokeball head. 

But being that it apparently has spores that are “highly poisonous”, even that is risky. If it was only a grass type, then it would be slightly better, but it’s grass/poison. 

Assuming that it won’t poison me if I just hold and pet it gently, it gets on the list. Barely.

Amoonguss.

I hate this thing. I hate it. Get this away from me.

At least it’s only 2′00″, and not massive like I’d assumed. Still hate it. 

Don’t make me grace it with further explanation. 

Honestly, I was starting to believe that Shelmet would be continuously shunted to the bottom of the list indefinitely, but no. It being puny almost managed to keep it above Shelmet, but the poisonous spores factor knocked it back down.

This is a good day for Shelmet.

Amaura! I actually ended up liking this thing more than I expected to.

Even though I’ve like, pretty much never seen this thing before, this little ice dino is really pretty cute. I expected it to be taller since it’s got that long neck, but it’s actually only 4′03″! (It’s 55.6 lbs too, btw.) 

Also, holy shit!!!!

This gets STAB and a 20-30% (depends on the game) power boost for any (damage-dealing) normal-type move!!!! That is fucking fantastic, particularly given that there’s not that many ice-type moves out there. 

Why haven’t I heard of this adorable killing machine before?? 

In other news... 

What in the world is this gender ratio? Why is it the same as starter pokemons’? 

This is a fossil pokemon that you need to revive. Is this absurd gender ratio the cause of their extinction, perhaps? 

Regardless, um. 

...Don’t keep this baby in warm environments or around Tyrantrum. :’(

Aurorus... I sat here and seriously considered adding it to the list, but it barely didn’t make the cut. 

Still, it’s got cute potential. It looks friendly, and those “sails” (apparently?) are really cool and unique. Still, the fact that it’s 8′10″ and it doesn’t have anything that really pushes it into “cute territory” means it’s not gonna go on the list. Still, I like its design from a more kinda... regal perspective. I’d wanna ride on this thing’s back and pet it and admire the scenery, but it doesn’t give off as much “smooch me! Hold me!” vibes as its predecessor.

Swablu!

Simple, clean design! The face is cute, and I appreciate the fluffy, cottony wings here. Admittedly, its face is a little boring, but it’s not too bad. It’d probably be way up there if I could find any pictures with it with its wings back like a normal bird

(i.e., like this:) 

But alas, I couldn’t find any pictures like that. It’s a shame, too, since with how fluffy those wings are, it’d probably be adorable and cozy-looking. Maybe its wings are just too big for it to fold back like that. (Maybe sometime I should try to draw it with its wings back like that, just to see...?) 

I’m actually having a bit of a hard time envisioning the size, here. Is it supposed to be 1′04″ from head to talon? Or is that a wing-to-wing measurement? Or is it even including the strand of feathers poking off the top of its head? With it only being 2.6 lbs, I’m having trouble envisioning it as a head-to-talon measurement, but I really have no idea. That said, birds are typically pretty light, so that checks out. I appreciate Game Freak taking that into account at least. 

But yeah, no. If it’s a head-to-talon measurement, that actually seems a bit alarmingly large (like, that’s owl sized!!!), especially for it only being 2.6 lbs, but if it’s wingspan length, that might check out, but be oddly small. I don’t know. 

Anyway, it’s a decent enough design, and I mean, its personality is basically just, “bird”. It’s cute, but its whole body pretty much being its head is a little disconcerting. Oh well. 

Altaria!! 

I’m somewhat amused it goes from Normal/Flying to Dragon/Flying by evolving, without any apparent dragon traits added. Anyway.

The wings are so great!!! Not only does it address my complaint about the wings, it also rounds them out across its whole body. Nice. I can imagine dozing off on the wings of an Altaria and just being completely cozy. 

At 3′07″ and 45.4 lbs, it reminds me of basically an ostrich but the (much less intimidating) size of a flamingo.

It has the perfect personality for a companion Pokemon-- kind, but still down to fuck somebody up if they mess with you. Is relaxed and calm. Sings beautiful songs for you. So automatically, it goes up a bit on the list. 

And for clarification if I haven’t made it clear yet, yes, personality definitely can impact how cute a pokemon such as this is. If you’ve been around anything like a child who’s cute until they open their mouth and start shrieking,  or a person/animal who looks okay but their personality is extremely endearing, you’ll understand what I mean. While the physical cuteness is definitely crucial on this list, I’m not just ranking physical cuteness so much as, I guess, overall endearment? 

Anyways. Nice.

...I bet the ones that taste the best are Clover-Mint Cream, Strawberry/Berry-Lemon Cream, Strawberry-Ruby Swirl, and any Rainbow Swirl one. 

Milcery!! 

There’s not much I have to say about Milcery, but worth noting, her evolutionary line is the first gender-restricted one on this list! 

Okay, so, Milcery is literally just a cute little blob of cream with a face. So yeah, it’d be pretty hard to mess this one up. Still, the simplicity of its design is done well and pleasing to look at. 

On another note–

‘0′08″ and 0.7 lbs. This thing is so tiny. 

Anyway…

Alcremie! The one I’ve both been looking forward to, and been dreading. 

Guys. Guys. Did you know Alcremie has 63 different versions? Not including a shiny for each one????

Obviously I’m not going to put every single one of these into the ranking, or I’d be here for ages. 

That said, some of these do look better than others. Here’s a quick hastily-made glimpse of my favorite from each “flavor”: 

The simplicity of the “main” design, or the one featured in pretty much all the official media, is, of course, good and concise. 

I think my absolute favorite of these, however, is… drumroll please…

Taking a quick break from ranking pokemon to appreciate this ship. It hurts.

Aipom. 

It’s fine. 

It’s definitely got the mischievous thing going on, but its design doesn’t lean heavily enough into it for it to really be mischievous/impish-cute. Frankly, if the purple part of its body got painted over in brown/black, the only thing it’d have going for it distinguishing it from just “a weird monkey” is its hand-tail, which... is already kinda... unnerving, maybe? Especially since it doesn’t really seem to have any other hands attached to its arms, really. Did-- did its hands get replaced by its tail-hand? Did it used to have hands, but the Aipom species over time evolved to prioritize the tail-hand? Leaving its arms as just vestigial stumps that can flail around? 

...Oh. I typed that before checking the pokedex entries. Turns out that’s literally what happened.

...Ew. 

Anyway.

Its natural personality also seems somewhat... exhausting. Given its penchant of mischief and playing around, as a companion, it would likely be somewhat difficult to handle in any casual setting. I just want a buddy I can chill with. That said, as long as he gets enough stimulation and fulfillment, he’d likely be a good companion, especially if you have enough energy to keep up with it.

Regardless, though, he’s decently cute. Besides, given that it’s 2′07″ and 25.4 lbs, it’d probably just feel like holding a child.

Ambipom, on the other hand, I think I might actually like a bit more? 

Look at this guy. So friendly. And he even gained a nose now! 

This no longer seems like its primary motivation is mischief. Sure, it might perform a prank or two every once in a while, but it’s no longer its primary goal. On an average day, he’s probably happy to entertain himself, and is just happy to be a friend.

Aron!!!

Hell yeah!!! 

This little baby is adorable. This is one of the peaks of the classic Pokemon designs. That eye is clean and cute without being boring to look at. The armor, despite being steel, looks smooth and huggable. And look at those adorable stubby little legs! I just wanna pick him up and hold him and love him--

Alas, despite being only 1′04, it’s 132.3 lbs. So it’s not exactly your average lapdog. Still, he could sit on the couch with you and chill with you like a very compact golden retriever. 

Also, fun fact! 

That’s amazing. It refines stuff it eats and then when it evolves it sheds the its steel armor and it can be repurposed. Like little shields and building materials. Both adorable, and multifunctional! That’s fantastic. I love him. 

The first evolution so far to be added to this ranking, here’s our boy Lairon. He’s getting on the list because he’s got a bit of the ugly-cute thing going on. Look at that mouth too! Check out those chompers. What a good boy. 

At 2′11″ and also 264.6 lbs, we’ve got another chonky boy. I’m sure that he’s a sweetheart, though. Just remember to give your strange steel dog lots of iron ore and water or he’ll eat your stuff. 

Tough and handsome as he is, Aggron is not going on this list. Sorry buddy :’)

Shelmet, by virtue of Accelgor, is next to be ranked! 

Not the cutest thing I’ve ever seen, but it’s okay. Decently “solid” design. 

Alas, it suffers from from the effect that modern pokemon have-- the simplified eyes and design to the point of not being very interesting to look at, just to make it easier to make merch and such. It’s definitely not hideous though, so there’s that! 

I do like how it’s designed to be similar to armor’s helmet. It’s kinda fun.

As badass as it is, Accelgor is not very cute. Maybe someday if I make a ranking of cool pokemon, he’ll have his time to shine.

Abra! Yeah!! This is a cute boy. 

The design is simple and clean. Fox-like child thing. 

To be honest, now that I’m thinking about it, I’m not really sure what it’s supposed to be based on? A cat? Fox? Hell, I guess its little talon-feet could be based off a bird. And it’s got that saiyan-armor-thing going on in its shoulders. 

I probably shouldn’t think about it too hard. 

It’s 2′11″ and 43 lbs according to the pokedex apparently, which-- is that 2′11″ number considering it just constantly sitting down like in its art, or is that the total height if it was standing up?? Either way, it’s honestly smaller than I thought, and if it’s a head-to-foot measurement, it’s a lot smaller than I thought. 

Kadabra and Alakazam, obviously, are not going onto the ranking. I guess they can be considered cute depending on like, how much attachment you have to them and all, and could be cute depending on how you looked at it, but if those were going into consideration in the ranking, I would have to rank all 893 - 932 pokemon, and I am not going to do that. 

Abra’s technically the first babie on the list, but won’t stay at the top of the ranking for very long. Sorry baby.

I finally made this blog because I wanted to make a list of pokemon I find cute, ranked. I looked up like “cute pokemon” and decided that the list Google generated was insufficient, so I’m going to make my own ranking. From the full list of pokemon. Yikes. 

This will not be an objective ranking in any way, and given how many fucking pokemon there are, this will probably take a while. 

This will be attempted in A-Z order, but I may skip around some, and where evolutions are involved, I might address them all in the same post. Also, this is not a list of “pokemon who are supposed to be cute”-- this is a ranking of pokemon that I find cute. If a pokemon you find really cute doesn’t end up on the list then I’m sorry. 

(If someone sent an ask or something then I might answer what I think of that pokemon tho) 

Also, the further down the ranking it gets, probably the more barely incremental the difference in opinion is, so like, the difference between #51 and #52 on the list probably won’t be much, and might even be practically the same opinion-wise.

I also need to find a good place to put the ranking???? I assume I’m going to make it progressively in Excel or something similar.

Anyways I’m gonna start this thing. Oh boy.
