Egúngún masquerades strengthen connections between the living and their ancestors in West African Yorùbá communities. In The Egungun Project, Beninese photographer Leonce Raphael Agbodjélou (b. 1965) depicts contemporary masqueraders showing off their magnificent costumes. Colorful perspectives on the Republic of Benin’s heritage and culture, these formally posed photos reflect Agbodjélou’s training under his father, renowned studio portrait photographer Joseph Moise Agbodjélou.
Curious what egúngún looks like in a different part of West Africa? Visit One: Egúngún on view through August 18, 2019.
