Hey... Do you know the song sung by the voice actor from the pilot Hazbin Hotel? Called Thank you and goodnight. Weirdly this song reminds me of Mystic Messenger, despite being a new fan and having been into this game until this year 2024 I already felt a connection, seeing old posts about this game from an old fan somehow makes me tear up. Despite I'm a fan of 2024, I somehow feel nostalgic about this game despite never actually experience it before

I'm afraid I haven't heard the song.

I don't actually feel like I'm that old of a fan. I got into the game back in mid 2020, where at that point the only new things that were eventually added were a couple of the last seasonal chats, Ray's AE and Jumin's Bad Ending DLC. I see posts of people who played the game from the 2016-2018 era and it does make me feel like I missed out, but also weirdly nostalgic too. So I feel ya.

Obviously Revolutionary Girl Utena isn’t perfect but it’s really the best example I’ve seen of striking a balance between showing the ways the Patriarchy Can Hurt Men Too and yet also acknowledging that women are *still* the ones who get the short end of the stick in this situation . Like, it’s very easy to fall into either minimazing and ignoring the way men are hurt by the Patriarchy - or pretending that this means that they suffer *just as much* as women from sexism (For extra shittiness: The MRA types who thinks the suffering of men and women under the Patriarchy ‘evens out’ and means women are not actually oppressed if men are oppressed just as much).

Patriarchal Society, in RGU, is a force that harms and preys upon every one of the characters. Even Akio isn’t a representation of it, but was once a victim of it just like everyone else is. Akio was once Dios, the Prince driven to near-death from exhaustion due society’s expectations from the ‘Ideal Man’. But… well… That sucked for Dios, but there’s exactly one Royal Sibling who ended up Stabbed Forever with All of the Swords. And it wasn’t the Prince. 

Like, it DOES suck that Dios just wanted to be the Prince society pushed him to be, only to Almost Die because it’s impossible to be a Perfect man. But you know what sucks harder? To be STABBED FOREVER WITH ALL OF THE SWORDS AND BEING HATED BY ALL OF HUMANITY. Akio and Anthy are both suffering, but trying to act like that suffering is in any way equal is just playing into Akio’s stupid manpain narrative where Akio’s pain about Anthy’s suffering matters MORE than Anthy’s suffering herself.

And of course, becoming bitter and jaded and almost dying turned Akio from the Well-Meaning-But-Stil-Unhealthy-and-Patriarchal-Prince to a total outwardly sexist scumbag who manipulate women and girls and sleep with his goddam 14 year old students and abuses and shames. So whatever angst he has only makes shit harder to all of the women around him.

And Akio’s only the most extreme example. The same is in some way true of every male character. Many of them ARE sympathetic in their suffering and pain, and yet the girls are the one who get screwed over the most. It’s almost a trickle-down system of pain. Toxic Masculinity hurts Saionji, gives him massive insecurities and takes away his abillity to cope with them, destorys the friendship he had with Touga, and that sucks. But what sucks EVEN harder is that it taught him to let this pain out on the women around him.

Personally, I don't think there's so-much a "true" attachment style, but you can change it if you put the effort into working on it. Prior to Mint Eye, Saeran definitely seemed more anxious-preoccupied, but it got more disorganized after Saeyoung left, his mom's treatment of him got worse and she eventually died, and especially after Rika brought him into Mint Eye (I'm pretty sure Rika also has a disorganized style too. She tries to assert herself as this independent, "strong" person and tends to treat others with cruelty, and yet she's also shown to be very desperate for love, paranoid, and has abandonment issues and self-doubt. Her relationship with V, especially with how it's presented in V's route, is probably the best example of this. How she constantly belittles him and says she doesn't like nor need him, and yet when he admits his "love" for her was more of an unhealthy obsession, she has a complete breakdown, because to her that meant he--nor anyone--has ever truly, unconditionally loved her.)

I do think the way MC is written if you're going for his good/normal ending does suggest she has a secure attachment style. She seems confident enough and will assert herself when he's treating her badly, but she isn't aggressive when doing so and still cares for him through it and asserts his emotional needs are largely valid.

I've had this thought for a while, but never really got around to posting it, but while I don't think the writers for Ray's route were intentionally trying to write his character with this specific concept in mind (though I'm sure they ,like, unconsciously have observed and are aware of this and tried to write it in his character without being aware this behavior has a term, if that makes sense? Like, people will notice behavior patterns and psychology in themselves and others and take some note of them, even if they're unaware certain behavioral concepts have a name?), I honestly think the whole "Ray" and "Suit Saeran" aspects of his route are a good representation of how it feels like to have a fearful-avoidant attachment style. I don't think it's wrong to assume that Ray and Suit Saeran have this attachment style in Mint Eye. There is a reason why they have to go out of their way to avoid affection and attention, in different ways, in part because of Rika's control over them. Rika won't hesitate use the player against Ray or Saeran if it benefits her, and it makes sense to see Ray panic and avoid the player, assuming the worst of the worst, because Rika's broken down his self-worth; It makes sense to see the way Saeran responds, lashing out and pushing away, because if you get close to him like you did with Ray, Rika will destroy you, him, and if Ray's still around, him, too.

I just don't know if I could say that this is their true attachment style since the conditions we meet them in are at the lowest points either one of them hit. We would need to see them at their best to know if that would change in any way when they're in a healthy environment, but since we're confined to the route, it's not wrong. Sigh. Those two need someone with a secure attachment style who understands the time and space they need to overcome these fears.

Pretty minor, but I used to wonder why the students in Utena were never shown wearing a winter school uniform and tried to remember if it was ever shown to be winter in the show (never obviously), and I just now realized it's probably related to the school being stuck in a time vortex.
