So, this picture is an amazing, joyful moment captured, but apparently the backstory is filled with heartbreak, which makes it even better…
Laura Linney’s first marriage had just ended in divorce, and Armistead Maupin had just gone through a ‘cocktail divorce’ (where once the HIV/AIDS cocktails seem to work, the relationship breaks up) with his long-term partner Terry (both of whom Ian McKellen credits to helping him come out of the closet). They had consoled each other through their simultaneous break ups, having become friends when Laura Linney played the role of Mary Ann Singleton in the PBS (!) adaptation of Maupin’s ICONIC Tales of the City series (Seriously, if you haven’t read it, what are you doing with your life).  Later, when Armistead was asked to be the Grand Marshal of the San Francisco Pride Parade, he asked Laura to join him, and she dug out the original dress she wore and rode with him.
Laura describes them both as brokenhearted (seriously - even though she’s talking about it 15 years after it happened, you can see how this period of her life still impacts her), “vulnerable…sad, mopey people.”  And as they’re driving, they’re being bombarded with people cheering them, and shouting their names and their characters name and she says he couldn’t help but burst out laughing at being so broken, and so celebrated, so loved.
(Unrelated to the story, but they both find new partners, and she even gives her son Armistead as a middle name, and I love them so much)
