I mean, she was fierce as a lion. And darker than most people were comfortable with—all the Pitches are—and she fought the reforms with her own teeth and nails. But she loved Watford. She loved magic.

“I do know Lady Salisbury. She’s probably my grandmother age, but she hangs out with my mother’s set. She tells bawdy jokes and always encourages everyone to eat more cake.”

“Fiona is vindictive. She’s impatient. And sometimes she just wants to rage against the machine—even if she’s not exactly sure where the machine is or how to properly rage at it.”

Felt like sketching Simon today. 🫶🏻 I’m pretty sure I would give anything for @rainbowrowell to write another Simon story (although I’m really excited for Slow Dance!)

“Oh, I suppose Niamh looks fierce no matter what. With that nose. That crushed plum of a mouth. That mean chin. But this takes her from fierce to something else… Something very nearly intolerable. She looks like Marlon Brando.”

She's five when she notices her legs don't work like other kids' do. They get stiff and sore if she sits for too long, and don't support her like they should.
The Normal doctor tells her to lose weight.
She's eleven when her fingers start to bend weird. It hurts to grip her pencil, to cast spells. It's a struggle to button up her uniform.
The school nurse tells her it's an overuse injury. She's not used to using her ring so much.
She's thirteen when her arms start to hurt. It hurts to hold them up, to stretch, to rest her elbows on surfaces.
Magic doesn't help.
She's fourteen when her periods start hurting. Her cramps are agonizing, debilitating. She misses more school than normal, wants to scream into her pillow.
Her body rejects the birth control she's given.
She's seventeen when she realizes the sensation from the Humdrum shouldn't affect her body this badly. It's awful, yes, but none of the other students are left in agony for longer than the rest of the day.
But she refuses to leave her best friend's side. All he can do is apologize.
She's eighteen when she realizes... she doesn't remember the last time she wasn't in pain. Was it fifth year? Third year, maybe. Definitely before the Humdrum started coming after her.
Her frenemy sympathizes. His leg will never be the same either.
She tries magic over. And over. And over.
Nothing works. Nothing can heal the pain, stop it, provide relief. All she can do is curl up and cry, wish for peace.
She's a powerful mage, she should be able to fix anything! She should be able to fix a stupid injury. But if she can't even heal herself with magic, she may as well be of no use at all.
She's nineteen when her parents sit her down to talk.
"Pen," her dad starts gently. "You know how my body sometimes doesn't work right?" She nods. "We think that may be what's going on with you."
Her world comes crashing down around her.
No wonder magic takes such a toll on her body. No wonder normal bodily functions debilitate her. No wonder she's been in pain for so long.
Genetic.
Degenerative.
Incurable.
The words swirl around her head. She can't comprehend what they mean for her.
She doesn't know whether to scream or cry or throw up. She just feels numb.
She's twenty when she finally comes to terms with her disability and all that comes along with it.
Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.
She switches from using a cane to using forearm crutches. Her collection of braces and supports grows. The number of doctors and specialists expands. She's no longer seeing Dr Wellbelove or other magickal doctors--like her dad, she sees Normal ones now.
She trades tips and advice with her friend, who uses a cane himself. The two of them go on accessible outings, swap funny stories, swap stories about their wonderful boyfriends, send photos back and forth of their decorated mobility aids. She loves him. By choice, she doesn't keep many friends, but he's a good one.
She's twenty-two when she goes to her first pride, the aplatonic flag draped around her shoulders like a cape. She couldn't go last year due to a bad flareup, but she's excited to go this year.
Her boyfriend is wearing a cowboy hat in the bisexual colors. It's completely silly and completely adorable. Her best friend's wings are painted in rainbow colors, and his boyfriend is wearing the most over-the-top, flashy outfit imaginable.
She smiles.
She knows today will be more than she can handle, but her and her boyfriend have already prepared for that. They have all her necessary supplies waiting for her back home. And today will be worth it.
It's going to be a good day.
She's twenty-six.
It's her birthday.
She's surrounded by the people she cares for most. Her parents, her siblings, her friends, her boyfriend.
The cake is purple. Her favorite color.
Smiling, she blows out the candles and makes her wish.

“My Lucy, my daughter…. Everyone said she was the spitting image of me—but she was better, I think. With her father’s sense of decency and my vigor. She was strong and stout and absolutely pink with life.
Until she met him.”
