The 2022 Gender Census is now open!
[ Link to survey ]
The ninth annual international gender census, collecting information about the language we use to refer to ourselves and each other, is now open until 13th August 2022.
After the survey is closed Iāll process the results and publish a spreadsheet of the data and a report summarising the main findings. Then anyone can use them for academic or business purposes, self-advocacy, tracking the popularity of language over time, and just feeling like weāre part of a huge and diverse community.
If you think you might have friends and followers whoād be interested, please do reblog this blog post, retweet this tweet, boost this Mastodon post, check out this post on Reddit, and share the survey URL by email or at AFK social groups or on other social networks like Facebook. Every share is extremely helpful - itās what helped us get 44,000 responses last year.
Survey URL: https://survey.gendercensus.com
The survey is open to anyone anywhere who speaks English and feels that the gender binary doesnāt fully describe their experience of themselves and their gender(s) or lack thereof.
Thank you so much!

Ok so I'm trying to be present with my experience of gender, and all that good stuff
And I feel like my gender fluidity isn't so much a pendulum between male and female as it is a pendulum between
Agender
and
ALL THE GENDER
I have many agender days, just feeling like Janet from the Good Place, "not a girl" even though I know I'm perceived that way
and then sometimes I'll have a day where I'm just going " HA! THAT'S MY GENDER!" to everything I see.
- healthy expressions of emotions between frat boys who say "bro" a lot? THAT'S MY GENDER
- princess in a tower creating works of art on a loom? MINE
- Worf clinging to an idea of Klingon culture that no other Klingon seems to be aware of? GENDER
- incredible feats of strength performed by a ballerina in a stunning display of beauty? AH! SO GENDER
- a little frog that looks like moss? THAT'S MY GENDER, BABY

I've asked other genderfluid people about this cause I want to have different points of view. I've already been told to look up different kinds of genrderfluidity, define what genders the character flow through, keep away from the genderfluid shapeshifter character trope, adding scenes when the character isn't sure what their gender is at the moment... I just want general advice about what you would like to see in a genderfluid character and what good representation would look like to you.
Are there even enough genderfluid characters for there to be a trope about us? Lol. Honestly if I could shapeshift it would be SICK AF I would never have dysphoria ever it would be dope. Since I was a kid whenever people asked me what superpower I wanted Ive always said shape shifting.
The only thing I would say is super important to me to remember is that gender fluidity is not just about shifting between binary male/female genders. Most of the time I feel non-binary, and sometimes slightly more feminine and sometimes slightly more masculine. Itās not that Iām ānot sureā about what my gender is- I know exactly what my gender is, itās just not an easily describable binary gender. Maybe I would be āunsureā of how to explain it, but not of what Iām feeling. Rarely if ever do I feel like a totally binary gender, I think gender fluidity is often much more in a gray area- I mean if youāre fluid itās pretty rare that you would be all the time totally on one side of the spectrum or the other, right? It just kinda makes sense that youād spend most of your time in the middle, just different parts of the middle. Or maybe not on the scale at all.
Also even though Iām gender fluid, my presentation physically doesnāt usually change too much besides like, some days I bind and pack and some days I donāt (if I was amab, maybe some days I would wear breast forms and shape-wear and some days I wouldnāt). But I always dress pretty femininely bc thatās what I like wearing and would like wearing no matter what kind of body I had. Most days when I put on my outfits I feel like Iām doing drag- my presentation is entirely superficial and doesnāt have to do with the gender that I āfeelā that I āamā that day. I just tell people Iām feeling more like itās a he/him day and expect them to respect it regardless of how Iām dressed. Whatever gender I feel like, I'm still me and I still like the same shit, it's not like experiencing various genders means I have multiple personalities. I think maybe that's a genderfluid trope, or maybe just a common misconception- that genderfluid people are like all over the place, personality wise? And I def do not find that to ever actually be true.

My Sense of Gender
I used to feel like I wasn't enough, seemingly having a gender crisis every other day of the week. I was hesitant to call myself "genderfluid", because as far as I knew, genderfluidity encompassed feminine genders too. But "genderfluid", although that term still doesn't really resonate as much with me, is an umbrella term.
That's when I came across "genderfaun".
In a nutshell, someone who is genderfaun is "Genderfluid, but hold the feminine". And lately, that's what I've been feeling. Some days I feel more like a man, others I feel more nonbinary. and some days I don't really feel like anything at all. My favorite thing about my newfound sense of gender, is that I can take it all one day at a time.
Of course, my name will always be Sly and my pronouns will always be he/they. And I'll tell most others that I know offline that I'm a trans man, because that's easier to explain. Besides, I'll always feel my Gender of the Day in a masculine way.
It's just that my manhood has an extra layer of complexity.

Hello lovely people, its pride month!! Hereās a little info about yours truly š³ļøāš
I am bi, Iām attracted any gender however I am also demisexual. Ā I need a strong emotional connection to feel attracted to someone irl
I am also genderfluid!! Ā My gender shifts and I cannot simply describe myself as only a boy or a girl, or something inbetween. Ā I fluctuate between my gender.
I use all pronouns, however the ones I like people to use the most are they/them, a good neutral middleground
I have a variety of sonas, of differing genders, each representing a different part of me, this is Goomi Gooze š„³
