A Love Letter to RWRB Fic Writers
Tumblr media
It’s hard for me to describe the importance of fic in my life. While canon is finite (though it can be used infinitely for inspiration), the fic writer’s imagination is far from it. I’ve read about Alex and Henry in so many different universes, always with the familiar thread of that desperate, can’t-live-without-it love. It’s made the world of RWRB so much richer for me, and makes me feel like I can live in their never ending love story.
What gets me the most, though, is always the writing. The talent in this fandom is immense, and I’m convinced so many authors would easily succeed in the literary world—not to diminish at all the impact of fan works and the gift that they are to the readers.
I wanted to share some writers whose words I’ve come back to over and over, and who’ve (unknowingly) kept me company and improved my mood on so many days. My goal is to do more in depth posts on a lot of these writers and their fics, but I’ll start here. Finally, this isn’t any kind of exhaustive list; I’ve only been here a short while and would love to be introduced to everyone else’s favorite authors as well.
stutteringpeach, smc_27, ronans, clottedcreamfudge, everwitch, cmere, indomitablelove, chamel, rizcriz, athousandrooms, anincompletelist, kiwiana, alasse, r_holland, myheartalive, bleedingballroomfloor, extasiswings, anchoredarchangel, sparklepocalypse, barthelme

i shouldn't have gone on twitter (i know)
but definitely feeling some kind of way about ppl going on screeds about how dangerous and harmful the show is to suicidal queer people bcs izzy dies (despite, crucially, the idea of suicidality on his part being tenuous, and largely projected/inferred, not an actual narrative feature)
but somehow not caring about the fact that ed, queer man and main character whose gay relationship is the central storyline of the show, had a full multi-episode arc specifically and explicitly about him being suicidal with the resolution being that no matter how bad it feels or how much you hate yourself, you are still loved, you have a reason to stay, you can make a different choice and who then continues his search for fulfillment and change and ends up happy with the love of his life
i'm not going to pretend i'm surprised that fandom is being like this but like damn mind the empathy gap

I am Izzy agnostic, and I will watch ep 8 at least a hundred times more before the year ends, and I get why they did what they did (specifically severing the last connection between Ed and Blackbeard), but I still think they could have done that without having to kill Izzy off.
I wish Izzy survived, not because of "good/bad storytelling" but rather because it would have been the antithesis of Stede's journey becoming a man. And a parallel of Ed's journey leaving Blackbeard behind.
It's a joke within this fandom that Izzy the only human in a world full of muppets. And so these muppets can get shot, stabbed, maimed, transmogrified, etc. and be alive and well five minutes later, but Izzy gets shot and dies (although to be fair, it was the third on-screen bullet wound that finally did it).
In S2 we saw Stede become a man, but we also saw Izzy turning into a muppet. And wouldn't that have been an ending to see Izzy die, have Ed cry all over him, only to have Izzy grab his hair and say "I'm still here you twat"? Except in that version Izzy really did die and who came back was the muppet version of him (not literally).
I still would have kept the ending of Stede and Ed staying behind and have Izzy go with the Revenge; they've outgrown each other, that much was shown throughout the season. But I really wish they let Izzy enjoy his newfound purpose. I know Izzy said he wanted to go, but there was still so much more uncharted territory (again, not literally) for him to explore.
Ed had his ties to Blackbeard severed, but so did Izzy. I wish they let him experience life without Blackbeard too.

okay at first i was like god stede is so dumb getting lost on his way back to the ship i love him
and i do love him
but i wonder if that's really true? or at least, the whole truth. if stede ran off in his excitement, stopped, and realised, oh shit, i already left him once waiting in the dark like this and it turned out badly. i should not do that again. oh, shit, i promised i'd never leave again, i gotta go back for him. oh, shit, i don't want to let him out of my sight in case he takes off. oh, shit, i don't want to say all that when he's clearly in a sensitive place with regards to literally All Of That so it's easier for him if i just say i got lost.
or it could be both. why not both.

ohhhhhhhhh i’m never going to get over the parallel from when stede and ed first meet vs when they meet again in the second season. how in season one, when ed and stede first meet and really get to talk to each other, ed has saved stede’s life and has been waiting at his bedside for him to wake up. now in season two, ed is the one close to death and stede is the one at his bedside and has brought him back from the brink of death. how even their near deaths were mirrors of each other, one hanging by rope, one pulled down underwater by rope (in his vision). the way they saw the other when they were rescued. ooooouuuuuuuu the parallels…………….
