"Is it because of how differently it (Final Fantasy XIII) handles female characters compared to earlier games?" YES you are so right about this!! The main cast is majority female and the fact that each female is an individual vastly different from each other with multiple dimensions and layers to their character is probably why people shit on it. Plus if you look at the males in the group, they are FAR from the typical brooding male FF protagonist and yet still unique and nuanced in their own way. People didn't like that the characters broke the molds/archetypes/tropes that many of the FF games follow. And that's why the FFXIII cast stands out so strikingly to me personally.

And they're not just deep characters, they're allowed to have major character flaws that actually lead to negative consequences! Not to mention that their personal goals and motivations do NOT revolve around men

Even well-written female characters from other ff games (like yuna for example) don't have any traits that men would generally find unappealing in a woman, they don't challenge male players at all

And then in comes lightning, who starts off so toxic and poisonous to the people around her, acting violent toward male characters and making rash decisions that require you to think about why she does what she does, and the male-dominated fandom hates her

And don't even get me started on vanille and fang because their bond is at the foundation of ff13's story, but it's somehow the one aspect that I've seen haters sweep over the absolute most. Which is very strange considering most people can recognize how important zack was to cloud, or tidus to yuna, or rinoa to squall, or locke to celes, etc

Now that there's men going around wildly misinterpreting tifa's and aerith's friendship as them actually just fighting over cloud, you really gotta wonder if they just didn't care about fang and vanille because their relationship had nothing to do with a man lmao. And you just can't fully understand ff13's story without understanding how important fang and vanille are to each other, just like how you can't understand lightning without taking into account her struggle between self-preservation and the love she has for serah

I don't like to cry sexism over assumptions, but it's pretty hard not to do that when such a huge chunk of ff13 haters are men that insist the characters are one-dimensional, like?? how can anyone be that wrong?? Especially when the ff games they praise have some of the most one-dimensional female characters in the entire franchise (sorry ff4 but your handling of rosa is atrocious), but of course that doesn't matter because hey! The dudes need a love interest to sit there and look pretty for them!

I think it's such lovely characterization that even when lightning, hope and fang got violent toward snow in xiii he never ever raised a fist at any of them. He was always the pacifist of the group

It makes it all the more jarring when, in the first scene you see in lr, he's suddenly fighting against lightning, grabbing and yanking her forwards, and scowling at her. It IMMEDIATELY tells you that he's not the same old snow anymore, even without the context of serah's death and his new gloomy design

#NO EXACTLY THATS ONE OF THE BIGGEST THINGS I LOVE ABOUT SNOW #he doesn’t fault anyones ill will or treatment towards him #he takes it all with gusto and he’s so understanding #like when Lightning apologizes he’s just like ‘?? what for??’ #because he never hated her of faulted light for her treatment towards him #he understands he doesn’t hate her #hope tries killing him? #snow saves him both because of Nora but also because he cares for this child and wants to keep him safe #sure you can also say it’s his hero complex but it’s so much more than that with snow in that moment #he even gave hope back the knife #because from that moment and later in other media it shows that #snow TRUSTS lightnings judgement and calls #so instead of keeping hold of the weapon meant to kill him #when it’s original use was to be kept as protection #which he KNEW btw be he was WITH Serah when she bought the knife #he gave it back to hope because he wanted hope to keep himself safe with it regardless of what happened prior #SNOW IS SO PUREHEARTED AND HE NEVER LET ANYTHING GET HIM DOWN #and in those moments he was defeated #he had friends to pull him back #so imagine being snow #suddenly losing everything #giving up his humanity AGAIN because he knew Serah was going to die #only to fail at that and slowly losing everyone he loves one by one be it one circumstance or another #wanting to die but enduring it all to still try and keep people safe #making people happy at the expense of his own #hating himself and wanting to die meanwhile all the savior stuff starts going on #being bitter and violent to lightning #wanting to die wanting her to kill him #and it takes getting his ass beat soul saved words of encouragement to finally get a semblance of himself back #and the funniest thing is we’ve known that fact since the beginning all because of a one off line said by gadot during a flashback

Anatomy is one thing for me, but smth I hope to get better at is details and coloring. I feel like I can manage flat coloring just fine, but shading/highlights are a pain, so I hope to continue practicing and getting better with my art!! Doing a couple of the requests was a lot of fun, and I want to do more, while also being able to draw my own fanart for the series. I’m already self conscious enough of my art so it’s a little nerve wracking posting anything new,,but I hope if you were to compare those to my old pieces of art I’ve uploaded here in the past, you can notice my improvements!😖🙏
