Cryptic guidance.

↠ Back into some FlightRising art, it's been a hot minute. As a kickoff, here's one of my two gen1 Obelisk clones, Gargouille.

"A cryptic friend cloaked within sound-muffling mist, her hard-hewn body shrouded within a venerable cloak of moss."

↠ As a side tangent, I recently made the decision to make my lair exclusively gen1, and it honestly feels much more relaxed, with not nearly as much business and stress. Sure, I have a bunch of unfinished projects, but I can complete them slowly on my own time, without constantly worrying about keeping up with current trends and sales.

↠ This was quite an ordeal to work on, but I'm extremely happy with the final result. And hey, new fanart category unlocked!

Genshin Impact's Rex Lapis in his Exuvia form. It's a beautiful design, and quite unique- the mix of a traditional eastern dragon and a qilin is something I'm not sure I've seen anywhere else. Hopefully I did this justice- I know that my style isn't very anime-esque, so it deviates heavily from Genshin's visuals.

Sᴀɴᴅ ᴀɴᴅ Bʟᴏᴏᴅ.

Sand Barioths are the mounts of seasoned Lamure warriors. One has to prove their fortitude, endurance, and lethality to gain the right to bond with such a highly-respected ally, and once formed, that link will never fracture.

Lamure's vast expanses are highly unforgiving and volatile- as such, a remote tribe housed on the edge of the Sadona Barrens has long known that beasts designed for speed and agility serve far better in navigating their home.

These wyverns are regarded as companions of the utmost honour, and to see one daubed in its Rider's paint is to witness an ancient partnership that has persisted for countless generations.

↠ Sand Barioth is an extremely underrated subspecies, in my opinion. Most of MonHun's subspecies feel a little too much like reskins or are too similar to their predecessors- Green Nargacuga, Pink Rathian & Aurora Somnacanth come to mind, in particular. Sand Barioth breaks the species mold, placing the monster in the antithesis of its domain- it's a really fun, flashy and bold concept.

In terms of inspiration here, I based both lore and visuals on the ethnic Karo people of Ethiopia. Their daily practise of body-painting is really beautiful, and so strikingly captures the human experiences of creativity and self-expression.

Fɪʀsᴛ Sɴᴏᴡғᴀʟʟ.

An incredibly rare sight within the frost, Goss Harag infants are seldom seen, being fiercely guarded by their parents. Their maturation is slow, taking at least a year until offspring split off on their own. When young, these Fanged Beasts are incredibly curious, clumsily tumbling through snowdrifts and intensely observing anything that catches their eye.

They don't begin developing their recognizable arm-scales and pronounced forehead crest until around six months of age, the same time where they begin to channel and master their intensely powerful attacks.

↠ This concept has been floating around in my head for a hot minute, so over the course of two days I finally sat down and sketched it out. I love the idea of taking some of MonHun's more intimidating designs and theorizing what their young would look like- solely for the cute factor, of course!

As far as technical work goes, I referenced polar bear cubs to get an idea of both the ecology blurb, and the overall pose.

Rɪsɪɴɢ Wᴀᴛᴇʀ.

A particularly vile creature, and one considered by most to be even older than the faeries.

Behaving more like a sea monster than its traditional brethren, this kelpie remains beneath the blackened waters of coastal tides, patiently waiting for foolish waders and fisherman to enter its range. Its tentacles effortlessly grasp unwary limbs, and its massive canines shred waterlogged flesh, leaving not even the smallest scrap to be found.

↠ After quite a wait, I’ve finally completed this design revamp. The original idea for this unique kelpie is from way back in 2017, and I’d always planned to return to it, to flesh out the concept in full. I think this turned out well, considering how many odd parts needed to be jammed together into one body.

Dɪᴠɪɴᴇ Iɴᴛᴇʀᴠᴇɴᴛɪᴏɴ.

↠ “I’m the one who gripped you tight, and raised you from perdition.”

I originally had bigger plans for this, but I think the simplistic, scratchy style works well enough. I'm too tired and sad to add any more details.

I’ve been rewatching a lot of Supernatural’s early seasons, recently. Going through all the moments I love best out of the show, Castiel’s first appearance in Lazarus Rising is still one of my top favourite scenes, overall.

It’s beautifully shot, proudly displaying the terrible power an angel of god is dictated to possess. Of course, Misha's performance is a stunningly strong one- a hell of a first impression, even after so long. The calm, inflection-lacking dialogue style really fits with the disconnect I’d imagine divine beings have with the mortals they’re ordered to observe.

Vɪɴᴅɪᴄᴀᴛɪᴏɴ.

↠ Aaand finished! I wanted to extend a sincere thank-you to the people who left supporting comments while I was working on this- it really, really means a lot to me, and kept me motivated enough to continue.

On to the analysisᵀᴹ, if there's a single character who was reinvented in the absolute best way in all of Resident Evil, it's definitely Luis. In a single effort, a relatively one-dimensional caricature was masterfully transcended into a man that can shine brightly next to franchise heavyweights like Leon, Wesker and Ada.

Andre Pena's vibrant voice work graces the character with his fittingly suave nature, but also brings in a beautifully delicate undertone of pain, regret, and a desperate clawing for redemption. His dialogue is ethnically accurate without being stereotypical, which is a huge step forward- and his character model's overhaul is equally strong.

There's the tired and worn greys of his hair, the mischievous shine of his blue-grey eyes, and the flamboyant confidence that comes with being the most useful thorn that Leon's probably ever had in his side. I absolutely love their dynamic- and I do think, by the end, Luis more than earns vindication from his past mistakes.

As it turns out, as long as there's an effort- alongside a little humor- people can absolutely change for the better.

Kɪɴɢsʟᴀʏᴇʀ.

Startlingly wine-red blood thickly drips down the kingslayer's sullied breast, as he languidly rises his arrowed head. Several bands of gilded light dancing over his arcing horns betray a heraldic beauty, amongst such visual, visceral carnage. The aftermath of an indifferent, impartial massacre.

↠ A faster sketch of Malzeno between Re4 Remake pieces, since I've been wanting to try and tackle the design for some time. I'm pretty unconfident in the background, since they're my biggest weakness, but hopefully it looks alright.

I really admire the intricacy of Malzeno's design, but absolutely despise fighting them, as a Dual Blades user. The combat is unbelievably clunky and frustrating- I still haven't beaten the Primordial form.

That being said, on my first try- after three carts- I did get its mantle as a consolation prize. Which still feels like an insult, somehow.

NOTE - This is the final product of my previous WIP post.

↠ Recently, I've been dealing with... a lot. Incredibly tough, confusing, and heavy emotions. I've been running around mentally, wondering if I'm handling things properly, if I'm doing the right thing. The painful reality is, I don't know. But this final portrait has served as a really cathartic way to process all that internal turmoil.

Throughout Re4, Leon’s emotions don’t follow much of an outward-displaying narrative, minus his openly hostile distrust of Ada. He aggressively hides his pain, masterfully masking it with a blend of sarcasm and humor. (He’s actually a hell of a lot like DMC5’s interpretation of Dante, come to think of it.)

Because it’s so rare for him, I wanted to try and capture a fleeting moment of emotional release- I’d imagine that even with everything he’s endured, there’s still solitary moments where all those emotional barriers collapse.

↠ Continuing on with my Resident Evil inspiration kick, here’s Leon from the Re2 remake! (NOTE- I altered his look a little bit, to better fit with his Re4 remake model.)

The character model work for both remakes hold an astounding level of detail, and the age/stress differences are most evident with Leon. In Re2, he’s a bit more passionate towards cementing his moral code, and definitely a rookie cop who’s been entirely blindsided by the horrific events within Raccoon City. He’s aggressively attempting to prove his worth, and holds a more youthful kind of energy. Unfortunately, due to inexperience, he's also more willing to trust others, which leads to some pretty harsh consequences.

In contrast, Leon in Re4 is far less jumpy, and in place of fervor and passion, there’s stillness and wit. He’s fully cemented his moral code, which at this point, is unbreakable. I can definitely agree with other fans that theorize his tendency towards humor is a coping mechanism for both being forced into his job, and enduring multiple gruesome experiences. Visually, he’s stronger and doesn’t expel excess energy, but he’s also clearly tired and traumatized.

I’ve said it already, but both performances by Nick Apostolides are fantastically multilayered takes on the character, and are a true joy to witness.

↠ Holy hell, this was a challenge. I’ve been wanting to illustrate Leon S. Kennedy for a long time, but didn’t have the confidence that I could truly capture the character. (I’m honestly still unsure whether I succeeded in this endeavor.)

Regardless, Leon has been a long-time favourite game protagonist of mine- even when he was far more aloof and far less grounded in the original Re4. That being stated, I absolutely commend the new, blossoming full-range personality the character has been given thanks to both the MoCap/Animation teams and Nick Apostolides' vocal performance.

In both the Re2 & Re4 remakes, there’s so much more pain, humor, wariness, intellect, grit, and humanity- it’s a true joy to see such an iconic character be given so much depth- a true well of (very real-feeling) personality.

This fiery girl serves as dual celebration for both the Sandsurge release and Flameforger's Festival!

Sandsurges are easily my favourite Ancients now, they're so unbelievably unique, and remind me of Dragon Age: Inquisition's designs. My one issue is the head shape- it was a pain to figure out, anatomically.

To a lot of Monster Hunter fans, Amatsu is the definition of a hurricane brought to life- but for me, Kushala Daora's always held that title instead. It's such a fantastic, classic Elder Dragon.

↠ Goss Harag's been on the backburner of monsters to illustrate, and I am insanely proud of the final product, now that he's here! It was a really calm, laid-back drawing process, overall- I definitely went with a looser style, this time around.

I love the design of these guys, the clear inspirational referencing of the Namahage kami in particular is something that has always stood out- they're one of my favourite folkloric beings, visually.
