⚠️ ADVISORY: Malicious Mods, Identity Theft, Malware, and You ⚠️

Hey, all! Not sure how many people will see this, but if you do, please reblog. This is a 'little' post regarding a potentially big problem affecting the Sims 4 community. If you download mods/CC at all (and yes I know CC is a type of mod), this applies to you.

TL;DR: For the sake of your personal info, identity, bank account, et cetera, please STOP downloading any mods/CC for the time being. Especially from the following sites: CurseForge, ModTheSims, The Sims Resource. It doesn't matter if you know the creator or not. Give it at least a week while we all figure out what's going on. If you must, I would recommend only downloading directly from a creator's Patreon (assuming they have one).

Other people have written at length about the mods in question, so I'll just share their posts below.

What's going on?

From the Sims 4 After Dark Discord server (a server you should join if you're not in it already):

⚠️If you downloaded any mod listed in the above post and played the game with them installed, this is the cleaner program Kuttoe (creator of the Home Regions and Townie Demographics mods) mentioned in their post: GitHub - overwolf/sims4-social-events-cleaner: Source files and exe release for a tool to clean up your machine if you have downloaded the "Social Events - Unlimited Time" Sims 4 mod ⚠️

Got confirmation from Kuttoe that as long as you didn't boot up the game with the malicious mods installed (or deleted them completely from your computer before playing the game), you *should* be fine. Still, I recommend that anyone who thinks they might have downloaded any of them run the cleaner program.

So, to recap:

Fake mods were uploaded to Curseforge, ModTheSims, and The Sims Resource

@msqsimsofficial had their account compromised on 2 of those sites (they are a victim of hacking, so do not send them hate!)

If downloaded, these malicious mods have the ability to steal very sensitive info (your passwords, credit card info if saved somewhere in your browser, data)

As of right now, antivirus software may not be able to detect the malware

Mac and Linux users seem to be safe; Windows users are the ones that could be affected

Why is this happening?

Unsure. Lots of theories are being made by people far more knowledgeable than me, but from the looks of things, could be crypto bullshit and/or an attempt to steal your data and sell it. This is very, very serious, and could wreck your life if said data/personal info falls into the wrong hands.

It's always a good idea to change passwords every couple of months or so, but if you think you've been affected, you also need to change your passwords for things like online banking, email and social media accounts, healthcare sites AFTER running the cleaner.

What now?

I want to talk about how we approach modding our games and downloading files in general.

Please STOP downloading mod file folders from people who did not create the specific mods. Period. This includes Sim dumps, building/lots with CC, mod folders promoted on YouTube, etc. This does not mean that anyone sharing them is doing so maliciously. In fact, I appreciate the amount of effort people put into compiling these resources! But unless you're super careful (and super knowledgeable), you run the risk of downloading malware like this on your computer. Make no mistake, the malicious files in question look like run-of-the-mill, everyday mods. Two of them were even posted from a trustworthy creator's actual account! The only way to know what they actually do is to peek into the code, and idk about you, but I don't know Python. So even after this issue is resolved, you really should only download files from the creators themselves.

But what about CC shopping?

Here's how I like to approach it: I stick to lookbooks and combing through the Patreons/accounts of creators who make items I like. If I see a Sim dump with CC that I'm interested, I try to reach out to the poster and ask where they got specific CC. If I can't do that, I see if it was shared via Drive, look at the individual files themselves, then head to the original CC creator's official download page and get it from the source.

This post is long enough already but I desperately need to tell you about her so i'll go ahead and cut the post :p

Note for readers: our ocs exist in a universe that canon-adjacent at best. We change so much so far back that it's frankly absurd so just. keep that in mind while you read <3

She was born in Munich, Germany to a prominent prosecutor and his wife, their first child. Her mother died during childbirth, leaving her and her father alone and upset over her passing.

She was born with a birth defect that left her legs weak, making it difficult for her to stand and walk on some days, while other days she is largely unaffected.

Her father did his best to raise her himself, making sure she had the mobility aids she needed, and her childhood was happy. She inherited her father's passion for the law, often accompanying him to the courthouse when permitted, and excitedly insisting he tell her about the cases she wasn't able to see play out in person. She also adored her neighbors, and spent much of her time bothering hanging out with the older neighbor boy who wanted nothing to do with her and his baby sister. The spring after she turned eleven, her father's health took a turn for the worst, and in the early summer, he passed.

With no other family to take her in, she was taken to an orphanage, where she spent the next few months. Most of her free time, she was permitted to spend in the records room of the courthouse, taking in any and all cases the records-keepers would let her access.

That was where she met Edgeworth, who saw the similarities between her and himself, and, in an uncharacteristically spur-of-the-moment decision, adopted her himself.

She spent the next six years traveling Europe alongside her adoptive father, excitedly taking in foreign legal systems and studying thoroughly, with the plan to eventually become a prosecutor as well.

During this time she also had the opportunity to meet Phoenix Wright and his daughter, Trucy, whom she bonded quickly with.

When Liesel and her father returned to the United States, with no plans to leave again, Liesel threw herself head-first into Themis Legal Academy, using her knowledge from Europe to spur her focus into the way things are done in her new home.

During her time at Themis is when she met Nora Spect, her self-proclaimed best friend, and Athena Cykes, another close confidant. She was also given the opportunity to reconnect with her childhood neighbors, the Gavins. Things had changed drastically between them, since she'd last seen them, and she got along much closer with Klavier than she had as a child.

She graduated second in her class, and started her career shortly thereafter, facing off for the first time in a real courtroom across from her best friend.

She prioritizes truth above everything else, leading her to have very few wins on record against Nora, though that hardly stops them from celebrating each case they work together, inviting friends out for drinks and karaoke.

okay i'm gonna stop rambling here bc actual events get really shaky from here on but!! other stuff to mention

she's autistic as fuck (she caught the Lawtism, as I've been calling it)

she's cishet & polyam

she's 18 during the events of aa4 and saw all four of the cases in person (4-1 from the gallery, and 4-2 through 4-4 while working alongside Klavier)

she had a crush on Klavier when she was a kid and it kinda faded while they weren't in touch but it comes back full force when she meets him again (and she's exceptionally awful at hiding it)

she has been asking for a cat since she was a child and only gets one after she moves out of her family's home because she was always either moving around too much in Europe or, once in the states, phoenix moves in and he's allergic

she's legally 5 feet tall but medically she's 4'11". she lied on her drivers license and her id and doesn't feel bad for it.

she spent a good portion of her life thinking of gay as the 'default' because so few of the people she interacted with were straight. she came out as straight to her family and is still embarrassed about it years down the line

she gets into a relationship w/ Klavier and Apollo at some point. still workshopping when exactly i just know she ends up w them ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Kallie is the younger sister of Klavier and Kristoph Gavin. She's a defense attorney and actress, having been acting since she was only 13 and attending Themis Legal Academy from age 14. Despite bearing more resemblance to Klavier, both appearance and personality-wise, Kallie has the famous composure and skill of her eldest brother, Kristoph.

After the events of aa4, she was motivated to become better than her brothers. Though she was still a child, she spent a lot of time trying to understand Kristoph's old law books, with her parents asking her tutor to aid her in her studies so she would be more than ready for when she would inevitability go to Themis.

Before she was old enough to enroll in Themis, her parents encouraged her to audition for a TV show she really enjoyed. None of them expected her to be chosen for the part, but Kallie happily entered the world of acting. She had very little free time during her teen years, her time after school generally being taken up by filming, but the time she did have was usually spent with her few friends.

At 15 she moved out with Klavier, him becoming her legal guardian, after constant issues with her parents due to their emotional neglect after all their focus went towards Kristoph instead of caring for their daughter. The next year, she began shadowing defense attorneys at Wright & Co. Law Offices, choosing to shadow there due to her prior experience with both Phoenix Wright and Apollo Justice.

After graduating and spending some time working for Phoenix Wright, Kallie reinstated Gavin Law Offices, rebuilding it from the ground up with the intention of making it better than Kristoph ever could.

Anyways yeah I'm kinda unwell about her. Some more info i didn't know how to fit into that:

She's a lesbian and her girlfriend is a von Karma

She was raised catholic

She spent her childhood clinging to Kristoph and was watching every case in aa4, but her parents got her earplugs so she couldn't hear anything after the recess in 4-1

She panics if she can't hear due to the previously mentioned earplugs

She does all her own stunts in the movies and shows she's in

Her best friend is also an actor and they became friends after they kept getting cast in close roles

She's allergic to strawberries due to eating them so much as a kid

She has adhd

She genuinely likes Klaviers music but would never admit that, that being said she still goes to his concerts under the guise of supporting her brother

pose making rigs (set for a flat view for easiness, 2.7+) that has almost all animals, plus sized bases (made by me), and mermaid bases.

textures that are pretty useful such as embroidery patches, fur textures, knitted bralettes, piercings (for the included piercing mesh), pins and rips, badges, and a crochet pattern strip i created from the punk stuff pack
