Are You Ready For Sick Building Syndrome?
Summer is over... Fall is here.... and Winter is around the corner. Soon we will all open the windows a little less often in our homes. Couple that with the moisture that comes from the rain. Add onto that the virus & bacteria that tends to increase during that time of year. Pretty soon the air quality inside your home will be less than optimum, and you're going to be primed for Sick Building Syndrome. Allow me to introduce "Fresh Air Everest" and "Fresh Air Surround". The technology inside this 'thunder in a box' is the most effective way to purify the air in your home, and at the same time, to disinfect & sanitize the surfaces you touch all day, every day. You read it right, our 'Fresh Air' units can kill: Influenza, Black Mold, E. Coli, Salmonella, even MRSA! On counter tops, door knobs, light switches, toilet handles, all the surfaces in your home that you & your family touch many, many times, all day, every day. Now think about all the things you touch every day at work, and the people with whom you come into contact. Then think about your teenagers and their activities at school. And what about your toddlers, at day care... the other kids, the toys that they ALL touch... and you know everything ends up in their mouths. You can't possibly protect them from everything outside your home. But you can certainly give them every advantage while they are inside their own home. And isn't that what we all want, a Healthy Home environment!?!? Visit the Environmental Protection Agency website to learn about the problem: http://www.epa.gov/iaq/pubs/sbs.html Then, come back here: http://www.GoGreenHealthyHome.com to learn about the solution: 'Learn About Fresh Air'. And... if you think living healthy is expensive, try living sick!!!

Change??? How's That Working Out For You!!!
$535,000,000! That's a lot of money. It all came from you, and now it's gone! I say that because that is how much Stimulus money was 'loaned' (more like 'given' in return for campaign contributions) to a California "Green Jobs" company to boost economic growth here in the Golden State. That company, Solyndra, just filed bankruptcy. 1,100 employees were told to pack up and head home. No more jobs here folks. So sorry about the 'Change' thing you were promised. We got ours... thanks for the money... gotta go... see ya!!! I talk about personal change in a lot of my posts, scroll back and see for yourself. But as for the social, political and economic change we've all had to endure for the last 2 1/2 years, I for one have had enough. And we're stuck with this for another 1 1/2 years!!! Then, to think that there are people out there who will actively pursue and support 4 more years beyond that?!?! Do they really represent a majority of the voting population?!?! Consider this a wake-up call folks. If we don't 'change', we're going to be 'changed'. Our new identity in the world may soon be, Western American States To End Democracy, or .... W.A.S.T.E.D.

You Make Your Own Decision
Okay, now I may have finally heard it all. As a result, I felt it necessary to give my current, and potential, Green Community fans & followers a fair warning. According to a previous Vice President from the 90's, Albert Arnold Gore, Jr, I am now a racist. To the best of my knowledge, I have never been one before, as I write this post I do not think I am one, and I didn't think I was doing anything that would cause me to become one anytime soon. But, apparently, there is now a 'new barometer' that can measure a persons inside intent, based solely on their position of agreeing, or disagreeing, with Al's position on Global Warming. For the record, I do not believe the 'science' behind Global Warming. But, I do believe that we should all be more personally responsible for the energy we consume and the waste we generate, each of which represent a limited resource capacity. I've said this before, but let me reiterate. I am firmly dedicated with Going Green in our home. We no longer purchase plastic water bottles, we no longer use chemicals to clean our home, we have reduced our water consumption by more than 50% in each of the last 4 years, we have reduced our natural gas usage by 20% in the last year, and we have totally eliminated the pollution generated by detergent from our washing machine, that's a 100% reduction in our home alone!!! Imagine what might happen if Al, and others, would follow our example. For all that, I get branded a racist by this .... person! Honestly, even giving him the respect due to the office he once held, I thought of other words & titles to use in describing him, but I will not allow myself to publish such things on this blog site. So, to all my current, or future, friends who may be African American, Hispanic, Asian, American Indian, Middle Eastern, or of another heritage not mentioned here, I am not sorry for Going Green. I do not apologize for changing my ways and deciding to make a difference in our world. And I have no qualms identifying Al Gore as the South end of a North bound horse. I can only hope that you draw you own conclusions about me. Use the mind that has been given you and judge me based on facts, not on opinions, especially the opinion of someone who doesn't even know me.

Skin Disorders, Hives and Allergies
Let's start with a question. Do you know which is the largest organ of your body? Think on that a bit... then I'll go ahead and tell you. It's your skin; the epidermis, dermis, and subcutaneous tissue, all 3 layers make up the largest organ of our body. Our skin is responsible for many different processes required to keep us safe & healthy. It is the primary defense mechanism between the inner workings of our marvelous body, and the outer, sometimes harsh, environment we live in every day. Through our pores, and hair follicles, fluids can pass in two directions. We all know that when we exert ourselves physically, we sweat. Conversely, when we come into contact with other airborne, waterborne, or personally applied substances, we absorb whatever is contained in that external material. Studies have shown that the contents of anything that we apply to our skin, i.e. lotion, sunscreen, make-up, etc, gets absorbed into our blood stream within 20 minutes. For people who have allergies to certain foods, a diet regiment can be put in place. The same is true for those people who may be allergic to certain liquids. But what about those of us who have allergies to airborne particulate. Or, those of us who have hypersensitive skin. We take medicine in hopes we can build up a defense. Or maybe we have isolated certain particulars, like pet dander, grasses, maybe a certain type of clothing material. Well, we can avoid some things on our own. But at the end of the day, we must go out to work, shop, play, and generally live. I have been taking a specific medication for about 10 years now. Although it has been predominantly successful, I still have had several trips to the emergency room with massive hives, dangerously low blood pressure, fainting spells, and the occasional bout with breathing difficulties. If you've experienced this, you know the feeling. If you have not, trust me when I tell you, it's not something you want to go through. Over the years I have monitored my locations, exposures, seasons, times of day, activities, all in an effort to learn more, so that I may one day avoid these repetitious & frightful events. One thing I never gave much thought to was soap & detergents. I don't know why exactly, I just didn't, until recently. I started thinking about when I had gotten most of my allergic reactions. For me, it wasn't seasonal. But it was predominantly during hot spells in the weather. Summer, of course, and during the Santa Ana winds of Fall where I live, and sometimes we would get an Indian Summer, a really hot period in the middle of Winter. Either way, I would be outside & very hot. I would begin to sweat, my shirt would get soaked, and then within 1/2 an hour, I'd start with an outbreak of rash & hives the likes of which I had never seen in all my day. Within the next hour I'd be passed out and waiting for an ambulance to take me off to the emergency room. Well, about 6 months ago I was introduced to a new Green Technology for my home, it's called 'Laundry Pure'. It was explained to me that if I connected this device to my washing machine, I would no longer have to use detergent to get my clothes clean. A bold statement, to say the least. I had been using detergent to clean my clothes for over 50 years, and I learned that from my parents, who used it all of their lives, and they learned it from their parents... get the picture. I was a little suspect at the outset, but the more I thought about it, the more I figured I had nothing to lose, and if it worked, I had so much to gain. So I got one. Let me share with you that I have not felt this good in a long, long time. I started putting all the pieces of the allergy puzzle together, and I believe I have come across an actual solution to the problem. A real preventative measure to better health, not just something the doctor gives me to mask the symptoms. My skin does not flake anymore (Eczeme), I don't get hives anymore, and I haven't been to the hospital once since I made the switch away from detergent and over to 'Laundry Pure'. I've also experienced the most unexpected side benefit. Since I don't use detergent anymore, I don't have to buy detergent anymore. I also quit using, and buying, fabric softener. And, after installing the unit, I discovered that I don't have to use hot water anymore either. The savings have been enormous! The unit will pay for itself in the first 9 months. So I'm not only getting healthier, I'm saving money, I'm reducing my "carbon foot print", and I'm doing my part to help clean the environment, all at the same time. I am so thankful that I was introduced to Laundry Pure. Regarding my allergies, it has been a lifesaver. And relating to the Green side of it, well, I think it's definitely the most amazing product to hit the market in my lifetime. Going Green - What's In It For Me?
What exactly is 'Going Green'? Sometimes, when we are trying to define what something 'is', we have to start by determining what it 'is not'. This whole concept of Going Green, Being Green, Living Green, Building Green, and many other combinations of this subject, can get so incredibly misdirected by a particular agenda from a specific group, that the original intent is completely lost in the translation. With that in mind, let's start with a different question. What 'Going Green' Is Not? It is not: Saying "let's save the forest", and then printing out your emails to 'keep a record' of a conversation or a transaction. It is not: Riding your bike to work when your commute is 40 miles, one way. It is not: Becoming vegetarian, period! It is not: Planting a tree, driving slower, or buying used clothes. I could go on, and on, and on.... I think you hear me. With the number of words I'm allowed in this article, I cannot list all the notions I've heard about what it means to Be Green, and how to Go Green. Not that these ideas are bad, but really folks, most of this stuff should fall into the category of 'common sense'. Be honest with yourself, wouldn't you agree? How Do We Make REAL Change? What I'm suggesting to you will be much harder than asking you to spend your time, or your money. What I'm asking you to do is... change your habits! That is what it's going to take if we are going to make any sort of measurable difference in our environment. We all, or the vast majority of us anyway, need to change. We need to change the way we live and think. We need to change the way we act and play. We need to change the very fabric of our being. We need to challenge old beliefs, re-evaluate what makes sense, and we need to do something that scares most of us, we need to try new things. Fear of the unknown will stop change 98% of the time. Where Do We Start? Another great question. Let me make a suggestion: Plastic Water Bottles! The number of plastic water bottles we go through in one year in the United States is staggering. Statistics vary from source to source, but a reasonable number would be around 50 billion, that's a 'B' folks, Billion, bottles a year, just in the US, and we recycle only about 20% of those. Which means approximately 40 Billion plastic bottles end up in our landfills every year. And, remember, that's just water bottles. That doesn't count fruit juice, milk, soda (OMG), sport drinks, and dare I mention, detergent bottles. There are many other facts I could go into, but I will only mention one other supporting fact here. Plastic bottles are made with petroleum products, that's oil for us common folks. Q: What is the amount of oil it takes to produce all those bottles every year? Think about it and take a guess? How about 1.5 billion, there's that 'B' word again, barrels of oil, that's a barrel, not a gallon. And that's every year, after every year, after every year. Seriously people, can you imagine how many homes can be heated in the middle of winter with all the oil? Or, how many extra miles of travel we can get, whether by trains, planes, or automobiles? Or, how about we maybe really cut back and leave some of that in our National Reserves? What a novel thought, actually SAVE some. And now, what you've all been waiting for, an answer to my original question: What's in it for me? Well, I want you to think about how much money you're spending on all those plastic bottles. Add it up for yourself, for your family, it's a good exercise. We did it in our home, the numbers were astounding. When you boil it down to dollars & cents (or sense), well, as I said before, money can be a great motivator. $300, $700, I've helped people save over $1,000 per year, simply by eliminating plastic water bottles from their life. Where Do We Go From Here? We could talk about other types of change like; solar & wind powered electrical generating devices, alternative sources to clean your laundry, synthetic turf for a 'greener' lawn (forgive me, I just couldn't help myself), amperage reducing devices that allow your electric motors to run smoother & last longer. But, I will save those topics for other articles, on other days. I am obliged at this point to share one solution with you here & now. Get 'Living Water' in your home today. This technology is available to you, right now. You can have it in place, in your home, within the next 5 days. This is a great way to empower you, to begin that change in your life. Don't wait any longer, start today. Make a decision, perhaps the most difficult decision you've made in a very long time. Decide to Change. Do it for you, do it for your family, do it for the environment, and do it for your savings account. Going Green does not have to be difficult, yet it will not happen without some effort. I believe passion follows commitment, not the other way around. You can be passionate about something, and still things stay the same. A wish changes nothing, a decision changes everything. Make a decision to Go Green, commit yourself, and each day your passion will grow. Can a Non-Traditional Approach To Health Make a Difference?
What's on our minds today? What is our #1 biggest concern, on average mind you, for being fulfilled or content in life? Is it making more money? Getting a bigger house? Finding a better job? Making sure our children can get into college? All these are valid and admirable goals. But I believe we have a more rudimentary desire. One rooted deep in our minds, hearts, bodies & souls. One that we are born with, yet when attempting to come to terms with it, we struggle. I'm talking about our health! In our youth we run, and jump, and play, most of it outside in the sun and fresh air. Then, school brings our first introduction to the dangers of Indoor Air Quality (IAQ). No one tells us about it, yet there we are in the midst of it, day after day, for 12 years. Next comes college for a lot of people. More rooms, and different types of buildings. Larger gathering places with mechanical ventilation systems. People who have to be there an can't afford to miss a day. So they come no matter how they feel, coughing & sneezing & hacking their way through class just to make a grade. For many others it is the workplace, and Sick Building Syndrome (SBS). Unless you're in the trades that allow you to work outdoor, many professional careers keep us tightly knit inside a building for 9 hours a day, 335 days a year, for what may turn out to be the next 40 years. The driving, the stress of performance, acceptance, advancement, it all adds up to, in many cases, more than our bodies can handle. We study more, work more, and play less. We gather 'things' along the way, and the responsibility of maintenance becomes a burden to us all. We drink, we smoke, we eat... oh how we eat. Even if we don't smoke, or if we don't drink (alcohol), we consume so many other things that our bodies don't need; fats, sugars, caffeine, carbohydrates, manufactured fillers & dyes that we can't process, or simply just can't handle in the volumes by which we ingest them. We are quite literally polluting our system with toxins. Our body then goes into a self-preservation mode, and it begins to store this excess in various ways to protect us from our self-destructive lifestyle. Fat becomes an insulation between life & death. In some people, that is the only reason they are still alive. The body actually stores the toxins in the fat cells so that they do not kill us when we're unable to excrete them from our body in the normal course of bodily functions. Which brings me to diseases. Given the environment I've just described, is it any surprise that we have such epidemic proportions of diabetes, gout, arthritis, acid reflux, osteoporosis, erectile dysfunction, attention deficit, autism, Alzheimer's, and numerous forms of cancer, that all spread havoc throughout our society today? Perhaps you formed good habits that began at a very young age, continued through adulthood, and on into your senior years. Good eating, drinking, and exercise routines that didn't end when life's transitions occurred. But when you did not get the good direction in your younger days, and now you're suffering from such ailments as have been mentioned, what does one do? Resveratrol, alkaline, antioxidants, immune system boosters, to name just a few, can be found in natural forms when a person observes proper dietary habits. But when you're so far into the game that you may never offset the damage done, simply by normalizing your eating habits alone, must we automatically turn to Big Pharma for the all-to-often sought after 'quick fix'? The pH in your body can be altered by drinking Alkaline water. Antioxidants as well, can be found in alkaline water. Resveratrol can be found in a glass of red wine, and if you're like me and don't drink alcohol, then you can find it in highly concentrated forms of consumable juice products Resveratrol has also been show in studies to actually enhance some cancer treatment medications. Lastly, let me add, it has been proven by Otto Warburg, winner of the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1931, that cancer cannot survive in an alkaline environment, and his thesis went on to show that cancer thrives in an acidic environment. http://www.nndb.com/people/682/000127301/ So, after all that, my questions are these: Why do we continue to focus so much on "treatment"? And, in this world of knowledge, technology, advancement, and higher learning of which we live, when are we going to shift our attention to 'PREVENTION'? There have to be close to $700 billion reasons every year that the pharmaceutical industry doesn't want us to change. And don't expect any doctors to get off that wagon train anytime soon either. The fastest hands I've ever seen are those of a doctor reaching for the prescription pad. Please don't misunderstand me here, I accept that modern medicine has a place in our society. The vast majority of us, at one time or another, have been aided in our recovery efforts by a pill or potion. I just think it's time for us to take a good hard look at ourselves, at our personal responsibility, and the simple approach to health by taking matters into our own hands. Then we have to decide to make a change in our habits, our choices, and our lifestyles. If you keep doing what you've always done, you'll continue to get what you've always gotten. A wish changes nothing, a decision changes everything. Decide today, please. Personal experience, coupled with substantiated testimonials, are evidence enough for me to support the premise that alternative, natural, herbal supplements, coupled with consistent activity, a lower stress working environment, minimizing your exposure to absorbed pollutants, a simple diet of balanced food groups, and staying fully hydrated, will greatly contribute to your effort toward living longer and enjoying a healthy & happy life. Inoor Air Pollution - How Clean Is Your Home?
Indoor pollution is a growing national problem here in the United States. There are so many sources of pollution that we bring into our buildings every day, it's difficult to even pick a place to start. Then, once the germs, bacteria, fungus, and particulate get inside, our homes are required to be built so air tight that we can't seem to find a way to get this stuff back outside. I should know, I am an architect in California, and we have perhaps the most stringent design standards in the entire country. Once upon a time... oh my goodness, I didn't mean to say that. But it does seem fitting, because I can remember when we used to say that our house could "breathe." Literally, you could hear the house as a breeze might whistle through a window or door that didn't seal up perfectly. Or, in the Winter, you could tell that we didn't have 10" of fiberglass insulation in the attic, or in the walls for that matter. The heat came from a gravity source on a wall somewhere, not forced through a metal shaft. And air conditioning, well we would just open a few more windows. Somewhere along the way we decided that air-tight was going to make things all better. What we ended up doing was locking ourselves into a prison where dust collects on a massive scale, mold grows in all the wrong places, and germs & bacteria thrive in the climate controlled laboratory we call our home! Along with that came one more thing, Sick Building Syndrome, or what we call SBS. The Environmental Protection Agency, EPA, has identified 3 of the top 4 causes of SBS; 1) Inadequate ventilation, 2) Chemical contaminants from indoor sources, and 3) Biological contaminants. When we lowered the requirement of the percentage of outdoor air supply to ventilate our buildings, we began the slow process of carbon dioxide poisoning. Then with the advent of 'wall-to-wall' carpet, and the padding, and the adhesive to hold in all in place, therein started the generation of 'off gassing'. Formaldehyde was everywhere. We were breathing it, and our children were playing on it every day for years. Then, as the dirt came inside, we couldn't just sweep it up, we had to clean it. Chemicals everywhere, the odors in our nostrils, the moisture in our lungs, and the fluids absorbed through the pores in our skin. We have mold growing inside our walls and behind the bathtub or shower pan. Now we have wonderful little bugs like MRSA, CRKP, H1N1, the hits just keep on coming. I know, this is a gloomy picture I paint, but check with other infectious disease experts, they will confirm that one of the worst places to spend too much time, is to be stuck indoors for too long. However, there is a solution. It comes in the form of 21st Century Green Technology, and it's called 'Fresh Air Surround'. This is not a filter, in fact there are no filters to change, none to buy, or clean, or replace. It takes what nature does outside and brings it inside. Through UV, oxygen & hydrogen, and patented 'Active Pure' technology, your home can be as fresh as your front porch on a clear Spring day. It removes particulate from the air down to 0.5 microns. For reference, an average human hair is between 40-120 microns in diameter. And, it does one other thing that makes it unique & the most amazing Air Purifier available today, it kills germs and it will sanitize the surfaces inside your home. It will disinfect counter tops, furniture, door knobs, light switches, baby toys, and floors, up to 99.8% pure! University level, peer-reviewed studies have proven this to be true. In less that 24 hours the technology in 'Fresh Air Surround' killed MRSA, salmonella, E.coli, black mold, and others. Many of the Green technologies available to us today are astounding. Progress is marching forward at amazing rates, year after year. And to date, I have not seen anything that even remotely comes close to what this product can do for us in our home. In a time when we want to live longer, live healthier, and enjoy the later years of life more than any generation before, don't you think it's time we stop looking for an 'outside' fix? I suggest we start looking indoors, at our homes, at our families, and at ourselves. I can say with confidence, I have the cleanest house I know of, and I plan on keeping it that way. Germs may still come into my home, but I can assure you, they don't live long. And although I can't guarantee that I'll never get sick again, I can guarantee you this much, it won't happen inside my house. Acid Reflux and Alkaline Water: Is There A Connection?
Acid Reflux: What is it? Acid Reflux is a voluntary response from our body when it is suffering from acidosis. With the stomach full of excess acid, after digesting as best it could the food passing through, a regurgitation occurs and the excess acids erupts upward into the esophagus. This acid is caustic, it 'burns' the tissue, and we suffer heart burn, indigestion, sour stomach, or any other word we may come up with to describe this unruly condition. Why do we get Acid Reflux? Excess acid production in our stomach due to massive amounts of processed food types, not enough proper food types, too much coffee and/or soft drinks, all these and more creates in our bodies a predominately acidic environment. After years of this activity, the valve, which is designed as a one way valve, can weaken and erode to a point where it doesn't fully close. At that point in time, your stomach remains open to the esophagus, and the condition becomes continuous, regardless of what one eats, how much or how little one eats, or what time of day or night it may be when one eats. How do we treat it? OR, How do we get rid of it? The pharmaceutical industry has developed numerous pills that attempt to 'treat' Acid Reflux. However, the truth of the matter is, they simply mask the symptoms, and never truly address the problem. Weather they be prescription, or over the counter, the results are all just about the same. Then there are liquids that attempt to soothe the burn. These can provide temporary relief from the symptoms, but if the behavior continues, you can be assured that the symptoms will return. Alkaline water: Can it help? When we're born, our bodies are approximately 70% -80% water by weight, and about 7.0 pH neutral. As we age, for a vast majority of us, our bodies tend to become dehydrated, and our body fluid becomes more acidic. This is known as acidosis. Unfortunately, our body needs to have a 7.365 pH to function at an optimum level. We can reach and maintain this level through proper diet. However most of us either cannot, or will not, do what it takes to obtain these levels through diet alone. Enter Alkaline Antioxidant drinking water. Since we have to drink water for hydration anyway, why not address the acid problem at the same time? Drinking 8.5 to 9.5 pH Alkaline water on a daily basis can return your body fluid to a level on the alkaline side of the pH scale. In so doing, it can reduce the acid levels in your stomach, which can greatly reduce your symptoms of Acid Reflux. In many cases, such as my own, the Acid Reflux can disappear completely. No more pills, no more fluids, no more sitting up and sleeping in your recliner, just to keep the acid from rising back up into your throat. Is there a connection? If we look at professionals who evaluate the myriad problems in our bodies that can be directly, or indirectly, associated with acidosis, the connection is obvious. When we listen to personal testimonials of people who have decided to make the change, the results are telling. Weight loss, detoxification, regularity, and of course Acid Reflux, can be dramatically improved, and very well may be eliminated, by introducing Alkaline water into your daily lifestyle. Personal experience, coupled with substantiated testimonials, are evidence enough for me to support the premise that Alkaline Antioxidant water is the solution to the Acid Reflux problem.
