President Biden Knows How Much He Needs Republicans

With the 46th President inaugurated and the 117th Congress officially underway, The Ripon Society held a virtual discussion this past Thursday with three Members of the U.S. House from Michigan, who shared their thoughts on some of the key challenges facing America and the prospect of bipartisan cooperation in the coming year.
The Members were U.S. Rep. Fred Upton (MI-6), U.S. Rep. Lisa McClain (MI-10), and U.S. Rep. Peter Meijer (MI-3). McClain and Meijer are the two newest members of the Michigan state delegation, having been elected this past November, while Upton is beginning his 18th term in office, and — as the longest serving member of the House from the Wolverine State — is the delegation’s dean.
Upton kicked off the discussion by talking about the new President and the role he played in passing the 21st Century Cures Act , the landmark law Upton helped author which was enacted in 2016 and modernized the way vaccines and other lifesaving drugs are developed and brought into use.
“Joe Biden had a lot to do with it,” the veteran lawmaker said of the legislation. “We included the Beau Biden Cancer Moonshot initiative as part of it. I was in the Senate chamber when the bill passed. One of our ideas was to have Biden in the chair at the time. And he literally wept as that bill passed. I’ve got the pen hanging here in my office. It is a remarkable achievement in bipartisanship. And I think that’s sort of my message here.

NY Gov. Cuomo Today Expands Deployment of Vaccine Kits

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo has just announced that New York is expanding its deployment of community vaccination kits to further strengthen fairness and equity in the vaccine distribution process.
Last week, New York successfully piloted the deployment kits to five NYCHA senior housing developments and eight churches and cultural centers where nearly 4,200 seniors and eligible New Yorkers received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. Kits are now being redeployed to four additional NYCHA sites and eight other churches to further build on that progress.
In total, this initiative is expected to provide first doses of the vaccine to an additional 3,000 seniors and eligible New Yorkers by Tuesday. As with the pop-up sites established last weekend, these sites will be re-established in three weeks to administer second doses.
Governor Cuomo said, “If you go to the amazing Shirley Chisholm Park and look at the bay during high tide, it looks beautiful, but if you go at low tide, you can see all the ugliness on the bottom. That’s what we’ve seen over this past year during America’s low tide - the racism, the discrimination, the inequality - and COVID has only exacerbated that problem. The undeniable fact is that COVID has killed the Black and Latino communities at a higher rate than the white community. There is no getting around that and its why New York has made ensuring fairness and equity in the vaccine distribution such a priority.

Ivan Wong Expert Tips on How to Shoot Light Trails

New York and LA-based photographer Ivan Wong shares his expert insights on shooting light trails. Wong is hailed as one of the most popular photographers of 2020, and he starts the new year with grander aspirations. He surged to popularity via Instagram after he moved to New York from LA when he started sharing his photos on Instagram.
He delved into shooting cityscapes and breathtaking architecture and significantly advanced further, exploring different techniques and aesthetics. He went on to mastering conventional and digital photography and also became an ambassador for Sony Alpha. He was also recognized as one of the most prominent Google Pixel ambassadors.

Wong has often shared his thoughts on photography techniques. He fundamentally lays all focus on a single piece of advice—never stop exploring and exposing yourself to challenges. He recalls his aesthetic charms and city skyline works due to consistent exploration, testing of different methods and techniques.
Wong adds that photographers should bet on long exposures to shoot light trails, especially in moving shots. He adds that shooting at a faster shutter speed can virtually stop the time, but it fails to capture the aesthetic quality. So, a photographer should do some takes until they get the right adjustment of shutter speed most appropriate for their subject.

Australia's Climate Change Progress - Biden Critical

New US President Joe Biden puts it on the record that he will not accept half measures when it comes to climate action. The message though not directly targeted at Australia is something the Morrison government should take notice of for trade reasons alone.
More than 70% of Australia’s coal and gas exports go to South Korea, Japan and China. These countries have recently committed to achieving net zero emissions within the next 29 years. President Biden has also promised to set a net zero target though the details of a time frame are yet to be confirmed.
Climate Council’s CEO Amanda McKenzie said, “President Biden will re-sign the Paris Agreement on his first day in the White House because climate is a top priority for the administration. We can expect to see a 180 degree turn in America’s approach.”
She also went on to say, “The election of Joe Biden is very significant for Australia. We no longer have a climate-denying administration in the US to hide behind in international negotiations. The Australian government is now in a shrinking pool of climate wreckers, in the company of Brazil, Russia and Saudi Arabia. Australia’s refusal to adopt a credible climate policy is not only costly to our international reputation, it is looking increasingly risky economically.”
Australia has an enormous amount to gain as the world transitioned to a zero-carbon economy. The economic effects of lagging behind other world leaders could be very damaging politically.

US commemorates National Religious Freedom Day

Today, the United States commemorates National Religious Freedom Day.  On January 16, 1786, Thomas Jefferson created the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom. The landmark legislation that inspired the enshrinement of freedom of religion or belief in the First Amendment of the Constitution and Article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
The United States re-affirms its commitment to advancing religious freedom around the world, including ensuring the right of every person to exercise their freedom of thought, conscience, and religion; change their beliefs; worship alone or in community; and teach their beliefs.
Our framers understood that a nation flourishes when individuals can exercise their freedom of religion or belief.  A government’s role is to protect this right, not to propagate a particular religious ideology.
On National Religious Freedom Day, we renew our resolve to champion religious freedom as America’s first freedom and a universal human right around world.
President Donald Trumps Proclamation…
Faith inspires hope.  Deeply embedded in the heart and soul of our Nation, this transcendent truth has compelled men and women of uncompromising conscience to give glory to God by worshiping both openly and privately, lifting up themselves and others in prayer.  On Religious Freedom Day, we pledge to always protect and cherish this fundamental human right.

$405K of Fake Handbags/Wallets Seized by US Customs

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers in Minneapolis intercepted a shipment containing more than 170 designer handbags and wallets worth more than $400,000.
On January 12, CBP officers in Minneapolis seized a shipment manifested as clothes. The parcel was inspected to determine if the goods were admissible in accordance with CBP regulations. Officers found 173 various handbags and wallets with logos from designers like Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Chanel and others.
Due to various inconsistencies, poor quality, and the incorrect packaging, further inspection by CBP import specialists determined the items were counterfeit. If they were authentic, the retail value would have been $405,975. The items came from Laos and were addressed to a residence in St. Paul.
Augustine Moore, Area Port Director-Minneapolis said, “Our officers and import specialists have done an excellent job targeting shipments and identifying counterfeit items. These types of violations negatively impact trademark holders and is dangerous to consumers, as well.”
Counterfeit merchandise is often made of inferior materials, manufactured under uncontrolled and unsanitary conditions and labeled with false information, potentially threatening the health and safety of buyers and users.
Every year, CBP seizes millions of counterfeit goods from countries around the world as part of its mission to protect U.S. businesses and consumers.

Extreme Drought Risk to Double Due to Climate Change

If the current levels of global warming continue to rise then up to 8 percent of the world’s population could be threatened by extreme droughts by the end of the 21st century. That is double the amount amount of people who were originally estimated to experience severe drought.
This is the key finding of a comprehensive study by an international team of scientists, including Jacob Schewe, Anne Gädecke, and Dieter Gerten from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK). Without effective climate change mitigation and resource maintenance, the authors argue, global water shortages could have disastrous ramifications.

Co-author Jacob Schewe, leader of the research group said, “If we continue to destabilize our climate, the amount of freshwater accumulated in snow, ice, rivers, lakes as well as reservoirs, wetlands, soil and groundwater, will reduce dramatically  – particularly in regions like the Mediterranean, South America, or eastern North America.”
He also said “Climate change impacts on human population dynamics” at PIK. “This means much more frequent, severe and extreme droughts, with all the consequences for human livelihoods, food security, and development at large.”

State Lawmakers Ask Pence for More Time

Lawmakers from key battleground states wish to review irregularities and legal violations. Election integrity watchdog Got Freedom? releases new summary of election irregularities and lawlessness.
Scores of state lawmakers from the pivotal presidential battleground states of Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin have signed a letter asking Vice President Mike Pence to delay the congressional acceptance of Electoral College votes for at least 10 days after January 6.
The legislators assert that they need the extra time to review “an unprecedented and admitted defiance of state law and procedural irregularities raising questions about the validity of hundreds of thousands of ballots,” which could necessitate that they decertify their states’ current slates of presidential electors.
A new summary of election irregularities, titled “Bought and Sold for Big Tech Gold: How an Unprecedented Private-Public Partnership Subverted the 2020 Election,” is being sent separately to Members of Congress by Phill Kline, director of Got Freedom?, a 501©4 nonprofit focused on election integrity.
“These elected officials are not asking Mike Pence to overturn the election results, and they’re certainly not trying to subvert our democracy,” said Kline. “Rather, they’re simply requesting that they be allowed to perform the role required of them by the Constitution — an opportunity that in some cases has been actively denied by their own governors.”

Australians are addicted to their mobile phones and that is official. Following a new study by Monash University their inability to disconnect could literally be endangering their health. In the first Australian study to measuring nomophobia (no mobile phone phobia) and its consequences.
The results clearly show 99.2 % of users have some fear of being without their phone on a daily basis. The study also found that for 13.2 % of the population, their level of nomophobia is severe which is leading to an increased risk of dependence and dangerous over use.
The study, Nomophobia: Is the Fear of Being without a Smartphone Associated with Problematic Use, was published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health.
Researchers from BehaviourWorks Australia, part of the Monash Sustainable Development Institute surveyed 2838 Australians on their psychological attachment to their phone and usage habits. The results showed that 43.3 % spent upwards of three hours a day on their phones. The more they used their phone, the higher their level of nomophobia and the greater their risk of problematic dependent, prohibited or dangerous usage.
Young people aged 18 to 25 had the highest level of nomophobia and males were almost twice as likely to engage in dangerous use than females. In Australia, 84 % of the population has mobile phone internet access, and there are more mobile phone subscriptions than people (109.6 per 100 inhabitants).

Red Cross Warns of Bushfire Psychological Impact

Australian Red Cross is urging communities to be aware of the longer term psychological and emotional impacts of last summer’s bushfires as many approach their 12 month anniversary of the disaster.
Dr Kate Brady, National Recovery Adviser, said, “Everyone copes differently, but we know that a year on, it’s very common for people to still be struggling in their personal recovery. For others, new emotions may surface during the anniversary, which is very normal.”
“Disasters can have really profound impacts on people’s lives, and the effects are often felt for many years. There are lots of emotions people can feel after a major crisis, such as shock, numbness, fear, helplessness, anger and frustration.“
“For people affected, this is the time to take good care of yourself and we encourage community members to look after each other. Check in with each other, so you’re not braving it alone and seek help if you need extra support.”
“Dealing with events like this over the longer term can be stressful, and emotionally and physical exhausting. Red Cross will continue to work with recovering communities, working with other agencies to support bushfire affected communities.”
Dr Rob Gordon, psychologist and Australian Red Cross consultant in disaster recovery, says those in bushfire-impacted communities can prepare themselves and take control during an anniversary.
He said, “Anniversaries are a very important part of creating a sense of history. Putting things into the past helps us
