The amount of effortless trust I put into podficers on ao3. I will download that zip file, yes. I am sure it is safe. Like. I should stop and think, "Is this a virus?" But I don't. Thank you, podficers, for slowly curing my anxiety in unexpected ways.

A beautiful excerpt from the introduction of this fascinating piece, Podfic: Queer structures of sound by Olivia Johnston Riley:
Yawning on the bus ride home from work, you put on your headphones and press play on the 24-megabyte (MB) file labeled "chapter one" that is saved to your phone. A gentle, ambiguously gendered voice begins to tell you a story. It is a story you have read before, but you are too tired to read it now; you just want to listen. The sound is unfiltered, with the low buzz of an air conditioner and occasional mew of a cat in the background of the recording. For these twenty minutes, you are not alone, stuck on public transportation—you are sharing an intimate, sonic space with someone you have never met but who loves this fictional world as much as you do. The voice in your ear shapes the familiar words in ways you could have not predicted; you catch jokes you missed before, and the tragic rising narrative hits even harder as you mirror the emotion in the reader's voice. The story's familiar characters—characters from your favorite television show, reimagined first through fan fiction and now through the sonification of that story—are falling in love, right before your ears, like they were never allowed to on your TV screen. You keep listening as you arrive home, lingering at the door, the kitchen, doing mindless chores until the story comes to a close.

I fucking love audiobooks, podfic, and storytelling podcasts so much. Like yes girl let me experience the written word the way the majority of humans across history have done, no eye strain no hand pain just injecting the books intravenously. Watch a similar spark of life to the one that keeps oral traditions, playground legends and campfire wisdom going pulse through the words. Remind me how fundamentally human it is to tell stories and to be told stories. Let me notice when a voice actor uses a similar voice for two very different characters. Let me wash my dishes and brush my teeth and fold my clothes while learning about far-off worlds that each illustrate a kernel of truth about the human condition, tying the infinitesimal to the infinite until I forget there was ever a distinction. Turn on the nonfiction and let my adhd ass absorb in a few hours a knowledge base that would take days or weeks to read with my eyes. HNNGH

Podficcing with no equipment (just a phone)
The post nobody asked for but some may find helpful?
This is a very, very bare bones guide I made for those who may feel intimidated about making their first podfic. There are a lot of ways to do it, but I thought I would share my way in case it helps someone!
My main issue is I have no real mic and no computer, so the usual tools—like the awesome free computer software Audacity that lots of other podders use—are unavailable to me right now.
If that’s you, or if computers just scare you in general, keep reading!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So here’s my set up:
iPhone
Earbud/mic combo that came with said phone
The default voice recording app on my phone
A handful of editing apps that I may or may not use for any given project
Not pictured: a quiet space. Sometimes a small, carpeted room or closet, or a blanket fort if I’m feeling fancy.
Also not pictured: another device to read fic off of. I use my e-reader. (You can read off a phone and record with it at the same time. I just find it annoying.)
Here’s my recording process:
Get comfy in whatever recording space I choose. Then, position myself so one earbud is in my ear, and the earbud with the mic is in my hand. This prevents the mic from turning or rubbing on my clothes, which can cause annoying sounds. I also hold the mic a few inches and just to the side of my face, so my plosives (“p” and “t” etc sounds) don’t make loud puffs into the mic.
Open voice recording app, press record, and just start reading. Get a feel for the tone of the story. Sometimes I read a bit and start over, just to get confident.
Once I’m done the recording, I save it to my files so I can open it in other apps.
The apps/posting process:
My two main apps are WavePad and EZAudioCut. I prefer the noise reduction features in WavePad and the precise cutting feature in EZAudioCut. (By cutting I mean deleting mistakes, mouth noises etc.) But you might have different preferences. I find both apps pretty intuitive. Play around! And bonus: both apps let you save in any format! mp4, mp3, and wav. This is pretty crucial for a lot of hosting sites.
Sometimes I’ll use GarageBand if I want to overlap my speaking with music, but this is a completely optional thing. I kind of hate it and have to re-teach myself how to do it every time, but sometimes the heart wants what it wants. My first handful of pods had no music whatsoever, so don’t let that stop you!
Ditto for cover art. I use Canva because it’s fun, but if it became not fun, I would probably stop doing it.
SoundCloud is there because you can get a free account with 3 hours space to upload whatever you want. It also gives you an embed code that you can copy and paste right into ao3. This was very appealing to me as a newbie with zero knowledge of html. I’ve now maxed out my SoundCloud account so I’ve since moved to archive.org for hosting, which is also pretty easy, and also gives you an embed code.
Dropbox is there for hosting photos/cover art, which I won’t get into here, as the process for uploading images to ao3 is covered extensively in a lot of places.
Additional notes: even if you don’t have any kind of external mic, a lot of podders just use the internal phone mic. It’s more important that you find a quiet space with very little echo potential. I’ve even recorded in my car after driving somewhere rural with no traffic. My podfic of “Beards, Booty Shorts, and Binaries” was recorded entirely in my car.
This is definitely not a comprehensive guide to recording and editing! There are more and better ones out there. Consider this to be, if anything, your permission to just give it a go and see how you like it! I’ll share more in-depth, next-level stuff later.

Help Rescue Podfic History (FTP Client Skills)
The largest podfic archive crashed in 2016  and since then no one has been able to take on the task of finding 5000+ missing audio files. That project is underway, so head over to Squidge and look through the spreadsheet of what is still missing.: https://squidgestatus.dreamwidth.org/89520.html
Right now, though they need help transferring the files over. Message from the Project Lead below. They need people familiar with FTP Clients
“First of all, I’m happy to say that so far we have found (as of this moment) 2,337 of the 5,441 files that are missing (or 43%)!  This is amazing!  Hopefully by the weekend we can get to 50% or more! The ssllllooooowww part of this is the processing of files.  Each one can take as few as 2 minutes, or as many as 15.
So this is definitely slow going - and the reason for my post. If you are interested in helping out/becoming an archivist, great!  But we need a bit more than just an archivist at the moment; We need someone who is knowledgeable with using an FTP client to move files about.
So if you’re interested, please let me know.  You can reach out publicly in response to this post, but it’d be better if you emailed mific and I at: [email protected]

Hello! First of all, I wanted to say that I love your Accidental Warlord Podfics! They’ve become my go to when I’m driving home from work or out running errands or avoiding doing my homework lol. I was curious though, how did you get into Podficcing? What equipment do you use? If someone were interested in podficcing, where should they start? And would you recommend any other good podficced works? Anyways I really like your work and I’m looking forward to the next installment! Good luck!
Wow, thank you! I’m honored that you’re enjoying my work so much. As for everything else…Okay, I’m basically incapable of giving short answers, but I’ve tried to at least organize this so you can skip to topics you care about, and if you don’t want to read any of it, here are a couple of excellent beginner’s guides to podficcing:
Azdaema’s A Newbie's Guide to Podficcing covers a ton of the relevant topics in a very accessible way
@fishandchipsandvinegar's podficcing tutorial covers a lot of basics in slightly more depth, including the specifics of recording and editing in Audacity
HOW I GOT INTO PODFICCING
My path to podficcing spans quite a few years and a lot of my own mental roadblocks. Originally I’d written out a bunch of it, and I’m still happy to share that if anyone’s interested, but I don’t think that’s quite what you’re asking for, so here’s a much abbreviated version:
About 7 or 8 years ago, I finally started listening to podfic and quickly came to love it and want to listen to it anytime I could, so I started looking for more and more things to listen to instead of limiting myself to my current fandom/ship at the time. In this search, I lucked upon Auralphonic, a podcast about podfic, and started learning more about the actual process and the people behind this medium that I appreciated so much. From there I searched out some podficcing communities and started reading advice and tutorials and meta, got a microphone, recorded something, and…well, roadblocks. Five years later I got through a few of those mental barriers and was inspired and started recording again, and over a year after that, all of the planets miraculously aligned and I managed to not only complete With a Conquering Air, but also delurk and post it!
Since then, I’ve finally made some social media accounts (like this one!) and actually started to interact with fandom, including other podficcers, at least a little. So obviously, everyone’s journey is different. I know of someone who discovered fanfic and started recording podfic that same week! And probably most didn’t stay quite so shut off from the rest of fandom as I did in many ways, especially since the podfic community is a really amazing, supportive, friendly network of people. If you’d like to be more involved in the community, I have a bunch of places you can find us down in the resources section towards the bottom of this post.
MY EQUIPMENT (AND ALTERNATIVES)
Mics: My mic is an AudioTechnica AT2005, which was chosen based on a recommendation someone posted in 2013. I’m fairly happy with it, but it records very softly, so I boost the volume after recording. I think the most popular podfic mics are the Blue Yeti or Blue Snowball, but there are a lot of good options at a wide range of price points, plus there are plenty of folks who just record on their phones. The one thing I’d steer away from is using a built-in laptop mic, but I know that there are some who’ve done it very successfully, so your mileage may vary.
Pop filters: These are little screens in front of your mic that help reduce the loud popping sounds you can get with “p”s and other plosives (very tedious to edit out after the fact). I use an Avantone Pro PS1 Pro Shield, but again, you can buy all kinds, or you can jerry-rig one super-cheap by pulling tights or pantyhose over an embroidery hoop or a wire hanger that you bend into shape.
Sound Proofing: TBH, I don’t use it. One of the reasons this works for me might be that my mic records so softly, so it doesn’t pick up as much background noise, because goodness knows my recording space isn’t naturally conducive to sound muffling. Regardless, it is recommended, and many podficcers make blanket or pillow forts, some line boxes with padding/foam/egg-crating and put their mics in the box, some record in their closets, and a few lucky and devoted people have created full-on mostly soundproofed recording rooms. In addition, everyone obviously tries to minimize the likelihood of other sounds, so I turn off my AC or heater, don’t record when the neighbors are mowing their lawn, pause when big trucks drive by, etc. Some people go so far as to turn off their refrigerators. But life happens, and I’m occasionally delighted to hear things like someone’s pet in the background and be reminded that a real person spent their free time to record this just because they loved it so much that they wanted to share it with our community.
Other Equipment: I have a boom arm (a Heil PL-2T), which just helps me position my mic where I want it to be in the space that I have (a stand would make for more awkward positioning for me). I also have V-Moda crossfade headphones that I use for my final editing pass. I’m sure it’s overkill, but it ensures that I can pick up differences in ambient noise, background sounds, mouth clicks, and anything else I prefer to try to edit out. Obviously, few listeners will actually be listening that closely.
Software: I use Audacity, which is free to download, and I’ve found it relatively easy and intuitive. If you have a Mac, my understanding is that Garageband comes free. There are also a wide variety of paid applications with various pros and cons. I haven’t used any others, so I can’t speak to them, but one thing I don’t have with Audacity that I’d like is non-destructive editing (among other things, if I apply a filter to a section, I’d like to be able to remove or adjust the filter later without having to undo everything back to that point).
HOW TO GET STARTED PODFICCING
Again, I highly recommend both of the beginner’s guides I linked at the top. I took a more hodgepodge approach of soaking up lots of information from lots of sources over a number of years, and then searching for specific topics as they became relevant to me. I couldn’t possibly remember all of them, much less find them again, but a lot of really good ones are listed below. Outside of that, here are some suggestions from my own experience:
Pick stories you love, because you’ll be spending a lot of time with them.
Consider if anything about the story itself will be difficult for you to narrate, and if you’re willing to deal with them anyway. Does it have lines in languages you don’t know? Names you’ll have to look up pronunciation for? Singing? Does it contain images, text messages, crossed out words, telepathic communication, or other elements that are visually clear, but which you’ll have to find a way to communicate with sound? How comfortable are you narrating sex scenes?
Consider your comfort with asking author permission. My various personal brain weasels mean that I basically can’t ask permission until I’ve already nearly completed a podfic, so if the author hasn’t given blanket permission, I have to accept that even after I put in all the time and effort to make it, I may not be able to share it if the author turns me down. (So far I have one person who never responded to my request, though there are multiple others in older fandoms who I haven’t asked yet and have serious concerns about.)
Consider starting with something short. I didn’t, so y’know. Do what you gotta do. But for all of the obvious reasons, it can be less intimidating to start small while you’re learning the ropes.
Always test your mic to make sure that you’re plugged in, recording, sounding the way you expect, etc. On my very first podfic which will probably never see the light of day, there was one chapter that I didn’t have the right mic selected, and I didn’t realize it until I finished the whole chapter, and it was really noticeably worse, so I re-recorded the whole thing…only to find that I still had the wrong mic. Now, I typically record all of the opening metadata, then check.
Figure out what works for you. It’s different for everyone. For example, with editing, one of my big roadblocks was that if I record straight through and edit afterwards, I find editing so tedious that I just put it off forever (I flub a lot). So switching to doing the majority of my editing as I record was game-changing, whereas for others, the stop/start of editing as you record breaks their flow. It really depends on the person.
RESOURCES
Communities:
The most active currently that I’m aware of is the podfichat Discord server, and I’d be happy to DM you an invite if you’re interested! It’s chock full of helpful information and amazing people.
Amplificathon was the biggest podfic comm for a long time, though it's not very active now.
The Podfic-Tips comm hasn’t posted anything new for quite a while, but it’s still full of valuable stuff.
Also, several years ago there was a conscious effort for podficcers to connect on Twitter, and a huge number of podficcers are there. So far, I can’t quite bring myself to make a Twitter account, but my understanding is that it’s still a thriving and super-supportive community if that’s your jam.
Other things:
There are a lot of cool posts about podficcing on AO3 that you might find though the Podfic Meta tag or the Podfic Fandom fandom among other ways
@godoflaundrybaskets has written some great stuff; try their #podfic meta and #podfic
@greedydancer has also made some helpful tutorials and meta on her LJ, with a masterlist here
@reena-jenkins is a podficcing wonder, and in addition to over 1500 podfics in the last decade, she has a ton of podfic-related posts and reblogs; try her #podfic resources tag
Podcasts about Podfic:
Auralphonic has been off the air for a few years now, but still lots of great stuff
Behind the Pod is the current podfic podcast that I’m aware of
Finding Creators/Works with Podfic Permission:
Fanlore’s Blanket Permission Statements page
Fanwork Permission Statements site (FPS)
@brickgrass’s awesome Blanket Permission Highlighter script, which changes author’s names to green on AO3 if they have a blanket permission statement listed on FPS
AO3 works tagged Podfic Welcome
PODFIC RECOMMENDATIONS
This obviously depends a lot on what fandoms, ships, content, etc., that you like! I’m an OTP kinda gal and I’ve been been in and out of over 60 fandoms and counting over the years, plus listened to podfic in dozens more, so I could spend days putting together recs that might not match your interests. For now I’ve stuck with The Witcher since I think I can safely assume you’re into that, and Geralt/Jaskier because they’re my OTP in this fandom, but feel free to ask about other specifics you might be interested in and I’ll be happy to share any of my faves that align. I won’t rec my own stuff here since you obviously know where to find it, but of course, I wouldn’t have recorded those stories if I didn’t love them.

Keeping Crows by Castillon02, podficced by @greedydancer. Adorable and I love the sound effects. https://archiveofourown.org/works/2480459
home is nowhere, therefore you by Ark, podficced by hsu. Very NSFW. I think all of hsu's stuff is archive-locked, but I really love their work, and particularly their Jaskier voice https://archiveofourown.org/works/23872717
and how we come to be here by pes, also podficced by hsu, and also NSFW. https://archiveofourown.org/works/24035746
The Witcher Wolf by Im_fairly_witty podficced by @annapods, who’s always delightful. In which Geralt is turned into a wolf. https://archiveofourown.org/works/24426019
I’m delighted that you’re interested in podfic, and I hope all of this helps some, but feel free to hit me up if you have more questions!
