Oh hey, I figured out why I like BNHA’s system of quirks so much

Unlike most media that have a magical component, BNHA isn’t just vague about how quirks work and what their capabilities are. And that’s a huge part of what makes them so fresh and unique.

A large part of magic systems rely on aspects of ‘you simply have to feel it and you will understand’ or the ability to do really vague things with no explanation and no one going back to it later. See: a lot of the actions taken in the later H//ry P//ter movies, any of the soul stuff in So//l E//ter. You know, thet type of stuff where the characters close their eyes and focus and suddenly it all works and no one wonders afterwards why that worked or what exactly they did?

But no, BNHA doesn’t do that. It starts off with a solid rule on how you obtain quirks and when they manifest, it names them and writes down its exact specifics (see: the water quirk used to explain why sometimes people change their registered quirk), and the second they discover a new use for it, teachers encourage students to write it down and help them dissect every aspect of this new trick to find a way to use this in combat.

It sets hard limits on what can be done with quirks and usually also defines its limits and conditions. Characters question what they can do with their quirks and why what just happened, just happened. There’s a reason people question how Aizawa can move his scarf; in a series with much looser limits and definitions it would be passed off as a side effect of his quirk, but because of how defined every quirk is we have the space to question this strange side effect.

And as a worldbuilder, these hard limits make me absolutely happy, because wishy-washy magical rules confuse the hell out of me lD
