Sadly, this made me fangirl.
imagine frantically looking around the room for something and a chuckling Loki behind you says “looking for this?” with a smile. “Yes!” you say lunging towards the item as Loki holds it out of your reach. you quickly give Loki a kiss on the lips and he hands you the item with a satisfyed look on his face. :3

Today’s theme? LOKI!! My favorite Marvel villain. Unlike a lot of people who turn him into a stuttering, neglected child, woobified mess, I don’t like him despite all the things he does. I love him because of them. He’s smart, handsome, manipulative, does what he wants, has magic powers and can still hold his own in a fight, and by the end of the Dark World, he wins. Basically it’s the dream of every middle child like me.

I LOVE eggs. My first order of business when moving out of the city was to get some chickens. I became friends with a local man, who was a highly decorated veteran of the Korean War. He had hundreds of high end roosters, (um, by that, I mean, fighting cocks) this was the first notion that he was a little strange. He said he took them to places all over Mexico and South America. I never saw his farm, a fighting cock, or a cock fight, but he brought a dozen eggs to me on many occasion. We would sit on the porch and he would talk about the war, chickens, gardens and general southern indiana life. I suppose loneliness was a large ingredient of having a hobby like raising fighting cocks.
Now, If you have only ever had eggs from the grocery, you have no idea what you’re missing. Grocery chickens are raised in small cages, stacks high, usually 6 to a cage. Even cartons marked “free-range” lead lives of captivity. They never see the light of day, or a blade of grass. They have a regulated diet to provide exactly what they need to output a certain amount of vitamins into their egg. Store eggs are bland, because of the chickens pointless and bland life.
A farm fresh egg though, has a rich orange yolk color, eggs come in all shapes and sizes, sometimes there are even two yolks. The shells range from white to dark brown, and every shade in between. There are a handful of breeds that even lay blue and green eggs. Some have speckles, some are sandpaper rough, and some are silky smooth. Rarely do they look exactly the same, like a store bought dozen.
Chickens are very people oriented birds, they are curious, they have personalities. They make funny noises when they lay an egg. Ours love to be held and petted, we even have one hen that loves going down our plastic play slide. They love kitchen scraps, they dig holes in the ground to take a dirt bath, and amazingly this technique keeps them clean and shiny. They love chasing down bugs, worms and frogs. Their feathers keep them warm in the winter and cool in the summers.
You don’t need a rooster to have eggs, just to hatch chicks. Hens make noises but are relatively quiet compared to roosters.
They start laying eggs at 20 weeks old, and peak egg production around 2 years old with an egg most days. Their production wanes a little as the days get shorter (but we trick them by having a light on in their coop).
They go to roost as the sun is starting to set, and rarely will venture further then 200 feet from where they roost.
A hen can live up to 10 years, and takes very little effort to care for. They have a few different varieties of food depending on the life cycle they are in; grower, layer, etc. They require water and food, a place to roost, a place to lay their eggs, and an occasional cleaning of their coop. Other then that they are a low maintenance/ low cost animal that produce a wonderful edible, usable product. And of course if you get tired of caring for them you can have them for dinner!
Recently many urban communities are changing zoning laws and allowing any sized backyard to have chickens. A common rule I have read is you’re allow up to 3 hens, but no roosters. Which, honestly roosters don’t do anything but make a lot of noise from before dawn till dusk, and savagely attack the hens all day.
I highly recommend thinking about your own flock!
