Bird Shaped Ewer with Daoist Priest

Korea, Goryeo dynasty (918–1392), 12th century CE

One of the notable artistic accomplishments of the Goryeo period was the production of sculptural celadon ceramics, such as this ingenious duck-shaped vessel. The duck’s extended tail is swept upwards to form a handle, which supports a human figure holding a bowl that wine would have been poured into, and its beak is fashioned into a spout. The human figure wears a headdress and a flowing robe, indicating that he is a Daoist immortal and suggesting that this ewer was used for ritual or ceremonial purposes.

Please daven for Amina al-Hassouni, seven years old, who lives in the Bedouin village al-Fura near Arad and had shrapnel from an Iranian missile fall on her head while she was sleeping on motzei shabbos.

She is currently in critical condition at Soroka Hospital in Be'er Sheva, and has already been through two surgeries. Her brother was injured as well, and is recovering at home.

She was hit by shrapnel because her family does not have a bomb shelter, because al-Fura is an unrecognized town. I'm guessing this is also why her family had to drive her to Arad in order for MADA to pick her up.

Living in towns that the Israeli government refuses to legitimize, but still harmed by attacks on Israel (and with far less protection), Bedouins get the short end of the stick in both directions. As Amina's father says, "Nobody really cares for us, not Iran and not Hamas and not our country."

Hoping for a refuah shleima for Amina, and the swift return of Bedouin hostages Hisham, Yosef, Hamza, Muhammad, and Farhan. And hoping that organizing efforts to recognize Bedouin villages and provide essential services, including bomb shelters and MADA service, will be successful.

Philippine Eagle aka Monkey-eating Eagle (Pithecophaga jefferyi), family Accipitridae, order Accipitriformes, endemic to the forests of the Philppines

CRITICALLY ENDANGERED.

While not the largest eagle in terms of weight, they are considered the largest eagle in the world in terms of length and wing surface area.

They are endangered due to loss of habitat (deforestation).

Once considered to be closely related to the Harpy Eagle, DNA analysis concludes that they are actually much more closely related to the Snake Eagles (like the Bataleur).

Despite the nickname, they feed on a wide variety of mid sized animals, like monitor lizards, flying lemurs, small deer, etc, as well as monkeys.

about the "you guys realise grammatical gender is not that big of a deal culturally-wise, right?" thing: i had an english teacher in university (who was canadian and a native (monolingual) anglophone) and she once went on a 20 minutes angry rant (exactly like these angry conspiracy theory youtubers yelling in their car) about "you french people are intrinsically misogynistic because you assign genders to inanimate objects, like tomatoes! you say tomatoes are women! is it because tomatoes are red like a woman's period blood?? IS IT???? you fucking PERVERTS!!". she was also an antivaxxer (something which i had never heard of at the time) which was extremely confusing. our final grade was a "scientific paper" (100% antivax bullshit) that we had to "analyze" and when i asked if we were supposed to identify the misinformation processes used in the article she yelled at me that she would fail anyone who "failed to understand the truth exposed in the article".

also she had an alarm on her phone that would go off 10 minutes before class was supposed to end (not uncommon, some teachers can forget about schedules) except that her alarm was a kind of banshee scream like. some kind of bloodcurdling horror movie shriek. a fascinating specimen for sure

There was a stats teacher in my high school who started a philosophy club that quickly petered out attendance-wise when people realized that it was a very obvious front for him to peddle his bizarre Christian conspiracy theories and he made us watch this documentary about how Obama was a secret communist (evidence: picture of him in college holding a book of communist writing) who was signaling to other communists all the time and planning to destroy American democracy and replace it with a dictatorship.

Which made it EXTREMELY funny when years later Obama released a memoir that was basically like "Yeah I pretended to read a lot of Marx to try and date leftist girls at school"
