on emoji spells and unspoken desires
it's been a while since I've done one of these, and this one will be a little different - more interactive. you may have seen my posts of emoji spells, or emoji spells of others, floating along in tumblr's void. they're useful for digital witches or those of us who are more drawn to visual than verbal aspects, and they're wonderfully fun to create. you can choose an emoji spell's composition based on aesthetics, meanings, or both, and I tend to like them symmetrical, but as with any spell, they can really be anything you want as long as they're created in a way that means something to you.
and, sometimes, like numerology, oracle cards, runes, or tarot cards, sometimes an emoji spell can be a representation of some unspoken desire or truth. consider those "last emoji" or "last 5 emojis" sort of posts you have floating around on tumblr or facebook. now take that content and see what kind of emoji spell springs from it - what have you been putting into the world without realizing it?
here are the last 5 emojis in my history: šŸ™ƒšŸ›šŸ˜¬šŸ˜šŸ˜‚
says a bit about what I'm feeling most of the time, right? now let me rearrange it into the form of an emoji spell:
šŸ˜šŸ˜¬šŸ›šŸ™ƒšŸ˜‚
following the new arrangement of the emojis you might see an emotional arc of sadness to joy transformed by prayer/spellwork/spirituality. could be turning something "cringe" into something humorous, or learning to take such missteps in stride.
these emojis are just like any other symbol in our lives : if they pop up often enough, they just might be trying to tell us something about ourselves, or we might be putting something into the world subconsciously through our choice in taps or the words we've said that lead predictive text to suggest these symbols.

Skal! Iā€™m slowly beginning the path of the Vƶlva and Iā€™m so lost and confused. I have established a connection with Freyja but Iā€™m still unsure of the path ahead. I feel like Iā€™m walking blind. I donā€™t know how to cast my runes yet and frankly Iā€™m scared of them. My cards only get me so far. I recently had my first trance and Iā€™m not sure how to process. There are few books on this path. Would you happen to have any advice for those walking on the path of SeiĆ°r and are unsure of where to go?
SkƄl, @umbran-muse ! I'm sorry for how long you had to wait for an answer from me; for a lot of reasons, I wish I'd answered sooner. Chief among those reasons being that around the time that you first sent in this ask I was in a similar headspace. Freyja had left me, my runes no longer seemed to respond to me, and I have yet to pick up my tarot cards again. I brushed it off as being too busy, but really, it was more like being adrift in an ocean - quiet, and terribly so, with a vastness of possibilities before me.
Each individual will approach their magic and their journey differently, and I am sure you have already made great leaps in yours, but if you are still struggling know first that you aren't alone. Second, I would give you a piece of advice one of my professors once gave me about writing: start where it burns brightest for you. By which I mean, start looking and practicing what interests you and what feels right, not where you think you have to start. Do you want to look at the historical and cultural significance of the runes, or try studying a god or goddess associated with them like Odin or Freyja, or maybe just dive right in? There's no wrong answer because this is your journey, and no one else's.
To build an energy connection with your runes and ease that fear, maybe just pick one up a day and carry it on you or study it for a few minutes in the morning. That can help you grow more familiar with them, and they'll get used to you too. Seiđr and other forms of divination can sometimes feel frightening because we're afraid of seeing something negative in our future or in the futures of thise we love, but the future is malleable. It responds to the energy you put out and the efforts you expend. When you do a reading, you are looking at a snapshot in time, an example of what could happen if things continue on their current path, not a script or a rail which must be ridden to the end.
Lastly, if you are still looking for resources, here are a few I might recommend:
Wild Soul Runes : Reawakening the Ancestral Feminine by Lara Veleda Vesta
While this one is certainly written with a focus on feminine energy and aspect, that's largely because Freyja is thought to be the originator of the runes and is a deeply feminine goddess. That said, anyone of any sex or gender identity can make use of this book, as it provides a deeply personal guide into the runes, including the outline for a 36 week study on the runes and making your own rune set of interests.
Taking up the Runes by Diana Paxson
I have only recently acquired this one so I can't say much other than it is a hefty book and, insofar as I and my husband (who is closer to the norse tradition than i) can tell, it is accurate. It's a thorough "guide to using runes in spells, rituals, divination, and magic," as well as a dive into the history and etymology of the runes.
Yoga for Witches by Sarah Robinson
Surprise! Didn't think you'd see yoga mixed with runes and seiđr, did you? While Robinson does not mention the runes explicitly or in any detailed context, what she does is craft a gentle, comforting book ok the way in which yoga and witchcraft can be combined, specifically in that yoga was a technique developed to prepare the body and mind for meditation. Meditation and trance are often found in seiđr, and the process of quieting your mind can help ease that fear of reaching out to the runes. Plus, this one's just a good book to read!
Hopefully all of that was worth the wait and helps somewhat ā™”.
fair winds and following seas,

hey lovelies ā™”. I have a few asks in my inbox that are probably years old by this point, but I promise I'll get to them. if you're still waiting on a reply for me about seiđr or a rune reading, thank you so much for your patience.
in the mean time, I've been playing around with watercolor botanicals and I'm absolutely in love with drawing in ink over watercolor.

what is a name that traumatizes you to this day?
hello! I have no idea when I received this, as I so rarely open my inbox anymore, but this was such an unusual ask I had to answer. there are two names that come to mind.
first, jessica.
I know many good jessicas, but one of the worst periods of my life was thanks to a someone with this name. im moving past it now.
second, legion.
hardly as ominous as it sounds. i'm equally terrified and delighted at this name for reasons related to personal writing I do (you can check @wolf-kissed-words for more on that). it's a bit like the way shenzhi shivers at the name "mufasa" in the lion king.
thank you for the interesting ask and the opportunity to delve a bit deeper into my thoughts with this one!

Just be you, lovelies šŸ’–
ā€œto be a witchā€ falsehoods
there are a lot of misconceptions going around lately on what someone needs to be a witch, i just want to clear some up.Ā
Tumblr media
you do not need:
fancy tools - or any tools at all, really. all you need is yourself and your intent. sure, tools that fit your aesthetic are nice, but you donā€™t need them. if you have the ability to buy and you want to, thereā€™s no stopping you, but please donā€™t feel like you have to go out and buy yourself an etsy broom or a cauldron. and donā€™t stress yourself out over making one either! they are but trappings.
appearanceĀ - in witchy aesthetic photos, itā€™s usually a slim, white girl with long hair. and that lack of a more diverse representation can give the impression that you need to look and be a certain way, but please know it is untrue. it does not matter what your race, weight, hair, or anything looks like.Ā
aesthetic - you donā€™t need to dressĀ ā€œlike a witchā€. a witch can look like anything. if you want to indulge in the black cat, black clothes look, fine, but you donā€™t need to confine yourself to it if itā€™s not your thing, you can look like whatever you want to.Ā
gender - there are some in the community that will fight tooth and nail to make it seem you have to be a cis female to call yourself a witch. donā€™t listen to those terfs. anyone can be a witch, regardless of gender. male, non-binary, agender, trans, demi, etc.Ā
black cat - you donā€™t need a black cat. you donā€™t need to have a familiar either. those are unique relations that should not be forced to happen
dark, mystical attitude - you donā€™t need to suddenly start talking like chaucer or put effort into having an air of mystery. you donā€™t need to be holier than thou, or act like you know it all. witchcraft is a journey that takes time to learn.Ā
cursing - no, you donā€™t need to curse. but you donā€™t need to shame someone for cursing either.
on a spiritual path - witchcraft does not have to be spiritual! you can practice magic without having to worry about being ā€œspiritual enoughā€, because each craft is unique and deeply personal, you donā€™t need to force it to be something that youā€™re not invested in.
religious - Ā there are many witches that wonder where the power comes from if they donā€™t call upon a god. the power can come from you. you do not need to devote yourself to a godĀ
wiccan - wicca is not the only way to do witchcraft, it is only one way of practicing magic. there are many people who think the only way to do witchcraft is to be wiccan, but they are misinformed. if you do not want to work with wiccan influences or traditions, you do not have to.Ā
initiated - some practices, some traditions, initiation is needed. however, to be a witch in general, you donā€™t need to go through any ritual to prove yourself one. be wary of those who insist you do, they are often trying to take advantage of new witches.Ā
straight/cis - some traditions youā€™ll encounter have homophobic roots/influences. while it is discouraging, you dont have to listen to those, or you can work with others to rework phobic traditions
aĀ ā€œnaturalā€ witch - Ā some people will claim to haveĀ ā€œwitchā€™s bloodā€ orĀ ā€œthe flameā€, meaning witchcraft has been in their families for generations. this does not make them superior or more of a witch than you. anyone who wants to be a witch can, no matter their birth circumstances.Ā
labelled - a lot of witches label their craft,Ā ā€œherb witchā€,Ā ā€œspace witchā€,Ā ā€œstorm witchā€ etc. you can be as many as you want, or none if it pleases you. you do not need to label your craft however. some people canā€™t put their craft in a box.
td;lr,Ā you do need:
to want to be a witch
your intent
thatā€™s it! happy casting!

Hello lovelies ! I know it's been a while since I posted on this account outside of the occasional ghost reblog. I lost myself somewhere in the past two years, and I'm trying to find her again. Finding her has taken me down some different paths than I thought it would, and I'm still learning the weave and weft of my own energies to know how best to direct them and make use of them.
Right now, I know I no longer have the capacity to keep up my daily witch tips, but you've all known this, haven't you? And yet, you still stayed, and it warms my heart ā¤ļø. Some of you have even joined me on my discord server (linked below), and though it's quiet, having that little piece of magic available any time has not only encouraged me but help me find my way back.
I'm still in the woods, and I may never leave them again. The path I took to get here has changed, and the trees and shadows are different every day. You may not find the same sort of content on this blog as you once did - and all the same, you might.
All of which is to say I'm still here, still learning and growing as a witch, a writer, and as a person. Care to join me in the holy wilds?

šŸŽ„šŸ”„Nordic HolidaysšŸ”„šŸŽ„
Let me start off by clarifying that these are the Norse holidays I personally celebrate. I have it split up into major holidays(holidays I try not to miss aka major holidays) and minor holidays(Smaller celebrations, I might not even celebrate these, etc.). This information will vary from person to person, you can celebrate whichever holidays however you want! Enjoy ~Ā
āœØMajorāœØ
JĆ³l
JĆ³l otherwise known as Yule/Yuletide is a Nordic holiday celebrated between sundown on the Winterā€™s Solstice for a following twelve days(now you know where the Christians got it). It is also duringĀ JĆ³l that the Wild Hunt takes place, Ɠưinn rides out with his dead, elves, or the dwarves may ride out across Midgard. Seeing the Hunt was thought to bring famine, plagues, and war but offerings of food and gifts could be left out for blessings and prosperity.Ā  JĆ³l was said to mark the return of Baldr from Helheim and the loosening of grip of winter of the Earth.
There numerous references to JĆ³l in the sagas including SkĆ”ldskaparmĆ”l, Heimskringla, and poetry written by the skald Eyvindr SkĆ”ldaspilli which when translated reads:
ā€œagain we have produced Yule-beingā€™s feast [mead of poetry], our rulersā€™ eulogy, like a bridge of masonryā€. Most of these references testify to JĆ³l being celebrated with blĆ³ts, feasting with family, drinking, gift giving, and dancing.
To be more specific, you can celebrate the twelve days of JĆ³l by being hands on in your devotion! This was traditionally a time of year that was largely devoted to baking, finishing the mead making process, and hand making decorations and offerings to the heathen home and gods!! There was typically at least one julbord(feast) and an animal sacrafice.Ā
For example, straw animals in the shape of goats(ĆžĆ³rr), stars, boars(Freyr), horses, and ravens(Ɠưinn) were made and hung up around the house or a JĆ³l tree! Yessss, that was something that German immigrants brought over to the U.S. The JĆ³l tree was traditionally a tree outside that was decorated and offerings were left at in honor of Yggdrasil! You can also make wreaths, garlands, and woven rugs or wall hangings!Ā
The first night of JĆ³l is typically called the Mothernight, this was in honor of the All Mother Frigg and the Disir. The first night(the longest night) is supposed to be symbolic to the rebirth of the world from winter. This is the perfect night to start on some weaving or crafts! Frigg is known for her weaving.
DisablĆ³t
DisablĆ³t was a sacrificial holiday(blĆ³t) in honor of the female deities, women, disir and valkyries. Itā€™s purpose was to enhance the upcoming harvest and prepare the grounds for sowing.Ā
Ā It is mentioned in Hervarar saga, VĆga-GlĆŗms saga, Egils saga and the Heimskringla. ThisĀ  celebration still lives on in the form of an annual fair called the Disting in Uppsala, Sweden(I really want to go to this). Thereā€™s a lot of debate to when the holiday was originally celebrated because the sagas all are slightly different. However, it is currently celebrated at the end of February by Sweden!
It was around this holiday that the first furrows were plowed in the fields and that there was a feast of new beginnings.
Nordic folk customs would include getting ready for the gardening season, preparing for the gardening/farming season ahead, and making a feast for your loved ones and female deities you work with.
SigrblĆ³t
SigrblĆ³t also known as Summer Finding or Ostara is the celebration of the spring equinox and welcoming good weather. It is a celebration of the rejuvenation of the earth, fertility, and growth.
This is a holiday often used to celebrate the Germanic god Ēostre, the embodiment of springtime and life, IĆ°unn, god of youth and renewal, and Frigg/Freyja, for their key elements in fertility magic. Is more commonly seen in modern days as a celebration of theĀ renewal/awakening of the Earth(JƶrĆ°), the deities, and life. It is also a celebration to welcome joy and light into oneā€™s life.
Nordic folk custom would include a large bonfire, smorgasbord(as always), baking sweets, and honoring the gods mentioned above or ones important to you this holiday.
Midsummer
Midsummer is probably the second biggest celebration next to JĆ³l. It is pretty much just the celebration of the summer solstice and can also be celebrated in hopes of a good harvest at the end of fall.Ā
This holiday is attested to in the Ynglinga sagas and has long been a passed down celebration. Folk custom for celebrating would be large bonfires, speeches, smorgasbord, dancing around aĀ majstĆ„ng(traditionally for fertility), lots of drinking, and galdr. This is another holiday with a lot of hands on folk tradition; wreath making, kindling fires, making toy viking ships of wood and filling them with offerings to be burned, burning corn figures, adorning homes, halls, and the fields with fresh flowers and greenery.
A lot of of historians believe this is a particularly good time of year to make blessings to Baldr. This was also the time of year for sailing and war. With crops planted at home, vikings would set off to go to other lands.Ā
Freyrfeast
My favorite holiday!! There is no actual surviving name for this beast but itā€™s believed to be held around the star of August and most modern Norse pagans celebrate it on August 1st. TheĀ  ƓlĆ”fs saga Tryggvasonar en mesta has an account of a priestess of Freyr traveling across Sweden at the start of winter with a picture of his god as a sacrifice for fertility and to honor him. Traditionally itā€™s a celebration of the first harvest where the primary god honored is Freyr with Sif and ĆžĆ³rr also celebrated as gods of harvest.
Traditionally the very first sheaf of grain harvested(I use my first bundle of lavender) is bound and blessed as an offering to the aforementioned deities and spirits of the field.
Folk customs include decorating the village well and springs, holding a grand feast of the gathered harvest, and baking a bread in honor of Freyr to give him at the end of and then plit among family. Preserving meats and vegetables was also done along this time of year and is a great time to start new batches of mead for upcomingĀ  blĆ³ts.
HaustblĆ³tĀ
This is the celebration of the Autumn Equinox, the second harvest of the season, and when Norse folk would start preparing for winter by bringing livestock + stored food inside. It is referenced to in the Ynglinga sagas as well as the Eddas. Itā€™s not as celebrated in modern times but farmers and agriculturalists still celebrate it and you can too!!
It is another joyous holiday celebrated with grand bonfires, large feasts, drinking, and dancing. It is believed that villagers would cast the bones of their slaughtered cattle on the flames to help them survive the winter.
There is a belief that once the village fire and all other fires were extinguished the families would go back their homes and light their hearth from the common village flame, bonding the community! I donā€™t know if this true but Iā€™ve heard the story a few times and I honestly love the idea of it.
VetrnƦtr/ƁlfablĆ³t
Otherwise known as Winters Night(or Samhain). This is the celebration of the last harvest, honoring of the landvƦttir, ancestors that protected the land through harvest, the vanir, paying respects to Death, and the welcoming of winter.Ā VetrnƦtr andĀ ĆlfablĆ³t are celebrations of the same holiday but ƁlfablĆ³t is a blĆ³t thatā€™s held privately in the home on the day of VetrnƦtr.Ā Ā
Similar to Freyrfeast, for VetrnƦtr the last sheaf of wheat/grain was bundled up and blessed and often given as an offering to Ɠưinn and his dead setting out for the Wild Hunt. It was believed with the start of the Wild Hunt the dead could return to the places where they had lived and a large feast, celebration, and fire were commonly used in their honor.Ā
This was also a time for serious contemplation of death. To the Norse people, death was always around the corner and was viewed as a natural part of life. Death wasnā€™t viewed as negatively as it is in modern times but rather the Norse lived their lives in a way to live & die with honor, so their future ancestors would have something to celebrate on this day.
ƁlfablĆ³t in particular was typically run by a woman but weā€™re past gender norms now so whoever is comfortable running a ritual do it. It is a sacrifice to Freyr and the elves of Alfheim, in honor of the families ancestors, the life force of the family and the hearth, and is believed to also be a ritual for fertility. It is done the night of VetrnƦtr.Ā Ā
Minor
These are not necessarily minor, they are just not holidays that I always keep up on, donā€™t celebrate, days of remembrance, etc. There are definitely more Scandinavian holidays Iā€™m not including because Iā€™m not knowledgeable on them all and theyā€™re not as widely celebrated(like celebrating Flag Day in America).
January 19 - ƞorrablĆ³t is an Icelandic midwinter feast in honor of winter and ƞorr which contains song, story telling, and traditional Icelandic foods like blĆ³Ć°mƶr and Brennivin. It is typically celebrated during ƞorri February 2 - Barri is the celebration of the union between Freyr and Gerd and a celebration of fertility and the earth. February 9 - Remembrance for Eyvind Kinnrifi, he refused to convert to Christianity soĀ Olaf Tryggvason tortured him to death. March 28 - Ragnar Lodbrok Day! Cheers to one the most legendary Vikings in history, King of Denmark and Sweden, and raider of Paris. April 31st-May 1stĀ - Waluburgis Night, a celebration of the saint Valborg a nun who was the niece of Saint Boniface.Ā  May 9 - Remembrance for Gudrod of Gudbrandsdal, whose tongue was cut out by the Norwegian king ā€˜St. Olafā€™ for speaking out against the tyranny of the Christian Tryggvason, and urged others to resist him and continue worshiping the old gods.Ā  May 20 - Frigg BlĆ³t! This actually a fave but itā€™s not really major so Iā€™m keeping it down here. Itā€™s a celebration of warmth and spring. Traditionally the time of year to go camping, hold a bonfire, and perform a blĆ³t for Frigg and honor her as the All Mother, pray for good blessings and health to those of your hearth. June 8 - Lindisfarne Day: Itā€™s believe that on this day in 793 CE three Viking ships raided the Isle of Lindisfarne which is marked as the start of the Viking age. July 9 - From the Laxdaela Saga, it is a day of Remembrance for Unn the Deep Minded, she was well-known and respected cheiftan in Iceland. October 8 - Day of Remembrance for Erik the Red, founder of Greenland. October 14 - VetrablĆ³t is a celebration of the harvest and honors Freyja as the god of fertility and honors the disir as well. November 11 - Feast of the Einherjar, a holiday where the fallen heroes of all the halls(Valhalla, Fensalir, etc.) are remembered. November 27 - Feast of the winter and hunt godsĀ  Ullr and Skadi, also a day to celebrate Weyland one of the greatest Germanic craftsmen.

Properties of Norse Paganism
Tumblr media
Decentralized - Norse Paganism is practiced in many different ways, with no way being more correct than another. ItĀ doesnā€™t have holy books, scriptures, or key religious figures that guide practices and beliefs, nor does it have doctrines, creeds, or dogmas. This spirituality is dynamic and can be made to suit a practitionerā€™s needs.
Animistic - In Norse Paganism, all things are thought to have a unique spiritual essence to them, without separation between the sacred and the mundane. The divine is viewed as a property of existence, rather than a condition to achieve or a presence to earn.Ā Because of this, thereā€™s no such thing as ā€œsinā€ in Norse Paganism.
Pluralist - Norse Paganism acknowledges that things can hold many truths and that there are many dynamic forces in nature. This is different from a dualist approach (the view that things are either a product of good or evil / one thing or another) or a monist approach (the belief that all things are an expression of one thing).
Polytheistic - Norse pagans acknowledge multiple deities and regularly interact with these deities in many ways, without a need for a mediator.
Orthopraxic - The focus of Norse Paganism centers upon the cultivation of practice and spiritual experience, as opposed toĀ orthodoxy, or rules about what to believe and the intensity of oneā€™s faith.
Life-Affirming - Norse pagans live their lives to feel fulfilled in this lifetime. Their practices are done to feel as home in the world, rather than reasons concerning the afterlife. While Norse pagans have many different views about the afterlife, good ones are already guaranteed.
