Excerpts from Ruki's personal interview for Garish Room #24
~ Talk about GROAN OF VENOMOUS CELL & 13 -THIRTEEN- ~
- The last concert at Budokan 13TH ANNIVERSARY LIVE [13-THIRTEEN-] is a result of 2014 for you personally?
Ruki: No, I cannot call it some kind of result. For us it was just another live, one of many that we give in the framework of the tour. And I would say it is not even the final, but the beginning. The beginning of something new under the slogan: “And now go ahead!”
- During the preparation for the concert you made any changes?
Ruki: When we made the setlist. Two days before the concert, in rehearsal, we just completely changed it.
- Right in such a dangerously short time and have changed?!
Ruki: Yes. For example, in the old setlist Shunsetsu no koro was third song…
- It cannot be! I wasn’t expected to hear this.
Ruki: In truth, it is good that we had removed it from the third place (laughs). We thought to make some surprise, placing Shunsetsu no koro the third in the order, but when the tracklist was approved and we began to rehearse, we suddenly discovered its absence. Immediately we thought that if we missed it, then maybe it’s better not to play it at all? (laughs). Especially when I tried to sing it in rehearsal, then I suddenly realized, even from the perspective of the lyrics that’s not what we need. Although we intended to include in the setlist more old songs we have created over the last 10 years, in fact, suddenly became clear, that our present worldview significantly different from the old creation. So in the end we’ve got such a tracklist. And as far as we know, many fans were satisfied with it. For example, take “Worthless War”. As soon as I hear it - immediately comes to mind: “No, this is not what we need”. For me, 13 STAIRS and INSIDE BEAST, which we played first and second on the live, pull in the listener in my inner world. With Worthless War you won’t come in this world. These two tracks are very similar in its concept to the album DOGMA, though small differences do exist, but we tried not particularly pay attention to it (laughs). I think they can be safely called “pre-history” to DOGMA.
This live at Budokan was played not only in honor of the anniversary of the group, but became the starting point of a new stage, although in principle it wasn’t supposed that it will be a sort of preview of the album DOGMA. But we understood the importance of this live and tried to take seriously the preparation of setlist. And sometimes it is very difficult to take and change something in it, since you already have established own views on the selection of the songs. Maybe that’s why, to everyone could express themselves on stage, during the Encore each of the members played a little bit of their own. On the other hand, it was like some kind of fanservice too. I think that as a result the live was insanely beautiful. Including Encore.
- And in the end, you played a new song.
Ruki: After Miseinen there wasn’t still the feeling of completeness the show. Actually, until the end we were not sure, that the fans really want to hear the new song in the end (laughs).
- This will be the title track of the new album?
Ruki: No, on the contrary, it is the most inconspicuous song of the album.
- What?! Come on … It is so powerful!
Ruki: No no. When you listen to the whole album, you will realize that there are songs more powerful (laughs).
- I look forward to the release. And why for its impersonation were chosen words such as DARKNESS and DOGMA?
Ruki: The concept of the album began to take shape during the tour SCENE 02 ( *tour14 [Redefinition]: SCENE 02 PULSE WRIGGLING TO DIM SCENE). In this case, we wanted to understand how we can repeat what we did a long time ago. How well we can create an atmosphere of gloom and darkness. And I think that slogan “Now the GazettE will be exactly like this” will make our fans to think about a lot of things during this year. I have already mentioned, that this time we will not do, as we always did, ie to represent the album through lives. Our new creation won’t limited to some concerts only. We want to show as much as possible. In a sense, our shows have a religious aspect, so probably all these reflections on the doctrines and dogmas originate because of this. And I am very happy that we were able to at least partly use these images in opening and ending of the live at Budokan. The purpose of the album DOGMA - to knock you off track. In regard to the drive and gloom, we made it excellent, I am sure.
thanks for reading :D

Making RUKI - styling of Ruki’s hair before Tokyo Dome
Everyone sees the beautiful finished work onstage. But not everyone remembers to thank the work of many dedicated, hardworking, and talented staff members like stylists, hair make artists, stage crew, lighting directors, sound engineers and more. So please don’t forget the other side of your favorite band, the people that make that band possible.
Styling credit: Kaolu Asanuma (Deep End) and yes that’s Masato Hishinuma (Deep End) in the background
I’ve never seen these three photos in a set together so I figured I’d go ahead and do that.
