I am permanently midly furious that when I realised my various health issues meant I couldn't go to movie theatres anymore, it meant my last big screen movie ever was avatar the blue people.
And worse: I like not being in pain, so I'm never going to change that either.

there’s avatar and then there’s the blue people movie

particular distaste lately for how, whenever i bring up hatred of fat and hairy people in primarily wlw spaces, there’s a running undercurrent that spans from just gently assuming i’m talking about butches, to saying shit like “just say butch, this is what butch used to mean before the Skinny White Androgynous Girls ruined it in 20whatever”
on many layers; the surface layer just being, no the fuck it did not, butch didn’t “used to” mean anything different than what it means now, and if you think it did, you’re buying into radfem revisionism that paints specifically the 1950s-60s white working class lesbian bars as the universally beloved halcyon days of yore that defined lesbianism for all communities forever. quit it with that shit.
but on a deeper level, i truly think that shunting all fat and hairy people off into needing to queer masculinity forever is… shitty? that’s just shitty? fat and hairy people can be femme. i know many fat and hairy femmes. fat and hairy people can be androgynous, can not relate to the butch-femme spectrum or social roles at all. the idea that if you’re fat and/or hairy you are uninterested in queering femininity or performing femininity to any degree is bigoted.
also, butch is not a body type. i’m sorry that you think skinny girls with side mullets aren’t queering masculinity enough for you, but the skinny butch who can’t lift an air conditioner is still a butch. butch has never been a description of a body type, get out of my house.

My wish goes out to everyone who isn't even hoping for a particularly happy new year—just a quiet one, a peaceful and even boring one, where nothing terrible happens:
This year, may we all be surprised by joy.

It was not completely dark in the Library, because the serried rows of magical books gave off a faint octarine glow, caused by thaumaturgical leakage into a strong occult field. It was just bright enough to illuminate the pile of shelves wedged against the door. The former Patrician had been carefully decanted into a jar on the Librarian's desk. The Librarian himself sat under it, wrapped in his blanket and holding Wuffles on his lap. Occasionally he would eat a banana.
Sourcery, Terry Pratchett

A digital drawing of an orangutan sitting cross-legged in front of a bookcase. The room is dark and bathed in a purple glow. The ape is wrapped in a blanket, holding a scruffy terrier. There are bananas scattered about the floor. The orangutan is holding a banana and has a small lizard on his head.

Heads up pet keepers: zebra mussels have been spotted in Petco Betta Buddy brand moss balls.
If you don't know what zebra mussels are, they're an invasive aquatic species that reproduces incredibly quickly, to the point where it can damage power plant equipment and pipes, and also is a major threat to native mussels as it rapidly outcompetes them. They are a scourge on lakes across the midwest and spread easily on boats or other watercraft thats been exposed to them.
Finding one in a chain pet store item is BAD NEWS. These items are sold across the entire country and this has the potential to be a major spreader event. If you spot a zebra mussel on marimo or on any other aquarium plant please make a report to the relevant wildlife officials so they can be controlled. Do not dispose of any aquarium animal or plant in a waterway.
If we are vigilant, we can help keep our native mussels safe.

“It is a well-documented fact that by the age of 5 monolingual White children will have heard 30 million fewer words in languages other than English than bilingual children of color. In addition, they will have had a complete lack of exposure to the richness of non-standardized varieties of English that characterize the homes of many children of color. This language gap increases the longer these children are in school. The question is what causes this language gap and what can be done to address it? The major cause of this language gap is the failure of monolingual White communities to successfully assimilate into the multilingual and multidialectal mainstream. The continued existence of White ethnic enclaves persists despite concerted efforts to integrate White communities into the multiracial mainstream since the 1960s. In these linguistically isolated enclaves it is possible to go for days without interacting with anybody who does not speak Standardized American English providing little incentive for their inhabitants to adapt to the multilingual and multidialectal nature of US society. This linguistic isolation has a detrimental effect on the cognitive development of monolingual White children. This is because linguistically isolated households lack the rich translanguaging practices that are found in bilingual households and the elaborate style-shifting that occurs in bidialectal households. This leaves monolingual White children without a strong metalinguistic basis for language learning. As a result, many of these monolingual White children lack the school-readiness skills needed for foreign language learning and graduate from school having mastered nothing but Standardized American English leaving them ill-equipped to engage in intercultural communication.”
What if we talked about monolingual White children the way we talk about low-income children of color?
Excerpt from a satirical blog post from The Educational Linguist that makes a good point about which language skills we value as a society and the problems with talking about a “language gap”.

And while we are on the subject of bad GtN takes, a recent one I ran across was someone in confusion as to why the lesbian element was so emphasized in the branding, because 'it's not relevant to the plot at all.' 1) Fantastic way to say you didn't understand what was happening in the pool scene, or with the conflict over 'Dulcinea', or Harrow vs Gideon's perceptions of the Tridentarii twins, etc, etc and 2) Fantastic way to say you are straight and used to having virtually every protagonist represent your experience.

Researchers have confirmed the presence of an exoplanet, a planet that orbits another star, using the NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope for the first time. Formally classified as LHS 475 b, the planet is almost exactly the same size as our own, clocking in at 99% of Earth’s diameter.
The research team is led by Kevin Stevenson and Jacob Lustig-Yaeger, both of the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, Maryland. The team chose to observe this target with Webb after carefully reviewing data from NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) which hinted at the planet’s existence.
Webb’s Near-Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) captured the planet easily and clearly with only two transit observations. “There is no question that the planet is there. Webb’s pristine data validate it,” said Lustig-Yaeger. “The fact that it is also a small, rocky planet is impressive for the observatory,” Stevenson added.
“These first observational results from an Earth-sized, rocky planet open the door to many future possibilities for studying rocky planet atmospheres with Webb,” agreed Mark Clampin, Astrophysics Division director at NASA Headquarters in Washington. “Webb is bringing us closer and closer to a new understanding of Earth-like worlds outside the solar system, and the mission is only just getting started.”

Black character's afro hair goes unprotected for a night or two
@dedevilish asked:
Here’s a question that’s too specific for google: i often find im writing a character that, at some point or another, has to sleep in a location that isn’t their home. but when that character is Black, that means their hair care necessities aren’t with them. what are the consequences of going without hair necessities for a night/a short amount of time? i can’t imagine it’s like “my hair is ruined forever”, but can anything more be done than “just gotta suffer through the night, i guess”
This may vary a lot by afro hair type, but it wouldn’t be too big a deal. First of all, I imagine if this character knows they’re often not sleeping at home, and are a prepared type of person, they may keep a silk scarf on their person to protect their hair at night. Scarf, bonnet or no, there’s protective styles one can do before bed, such as quick twisting and braiding (those take a bit more time) wrapping (a little less time needed) and the “pineapple” method (very quick). I suggest taking a look into those. You could search “Black bedtime hair styles” or similar keywords and note if anything you see suits your character.
Without any hair prep at night, they may find their hair is dryer, frizzier (especially a braided style) and more tangled than usual in the morning. The consequences could build up overtime and lead to breakage overall, especially if there isn’t proper care being taken on the regular or their hair is not in a protect style. But I can’t imagine they’ll experience much damage from one night here and there…lest they’re sleeping on rocks and are a wild sleeper!
