Rant about the finale (or the million reasons why I'm disappointed)
Spoilers alert so don't keep reading if you don't wanna see them.
Didn't see a lot of people disappointed with the finale for the same reasons as me so just gonna throw it out there: I am disappointed mainly because of how they portrayed Stede and his relationship with Ed.
First thing, I am NOT an Izzy fan. If anything I'm probably an Ed fan and I came to the show for the brilliant writing, the masterly use of comedy as a genre, and the unprecedented celebration of queerness in season 1. This means that I am not devastated by his death. BUT I am disappointed in their decision to kill him off. I saw David Jenkins' interview and discussion about how narratively it makes sense for him to die as a closure of the redemption arch and final consummation of Ed letting go of the old life. YET this show was never about structurally sound narrative, was it? The charm was always the characters' growth and how they embraced queerness - embraced themselves. And that theme was embodied by Izzy this season. I can see potential in him as a perfectly comic and beautifully queer character after his transformation but that potential died with him. It is abrupt, it is rushed, and it does not make any sense for the spirit of the show even when it makes sense for a symbolic narrative.
Second, the main thing - even though Stede is the lead character of the show, the finale does not treat him as one. From previous episodes we see a new side of him emerging. He was caught up in the rush, the same way Ed probably did so many years ago, and was unawarely soaking up some toxic masculinity even though it was because he pursued piracy as the ultimate means to release his queerness and find community. And there lies his new conflict with Ed: two people who love each other deeply but find themselves on different life paths. There was not really any conflict of interest that couldn't be solved but they needed time to figure things out. Stede needed a reality check, and he needed to understand Ed's "it's everything about fishing" - it's everything about how Ed was setting out to find a new identity, and how he fears that Stede is taking up his old path in misguided glory and will not come with him. And Stede needed to learn to respect Ed's choices even if it means they take different paths for a while, which also means that he needed to confront his own fear of incompetence, abandonment, loneliness, and rejection first (which hasn't really been addressed in this season yet). He needed to find confidence and faith - in his own identity and competence, and in Ed's love for him.
All this to say - he has a long way to go in his character development to justify resolving the conflicts in their relationship. Yet in the finale, he was not given any space or time to achieve the growth. We see him rushing through a plan of rescue with Zheng doing most of the work. We see him coming up with a plan to camouflage and escape the English, the portrayal of which did not show his wit or courage or anything profound about his character. Then we see him getting that happy ending with Ed, and somehow just... accepting giving up piracy, accepting Ed's change, accepting everything happily when he was clearly lost and confused before. And we were not given any explanation or portrayal of his inner conflicts. He, of all people, gets the least emphasis and character growth in the finale.
Again, I just see so much potential to really discuss the character's deeply-rooted psychological issues going to waste for the sake of a narrative structure. A happy ending is great but it's covering up so many unsolved tensions and conflicts - opportunities for character building - which would have been handled much more carefully (albeit in comedic style) in season one. Given that we might not get a season 3, this is worse than leaving me with a cliffhanger or temporary tragedy that makes sense for the character's path to growth.

We're just gonna start numbering these so I can a little bit keep track of them:
2x08 Reaction #1
Ok, they wanted to force end on a "good" note for BlackBonnet in case there is no S3. They kinda fucked it, but that was the goal.
So... why did they do any of that with the Kraken arc at all?
Like my biggest takeaway from the BlackBonnet arc for this season is that they didn't really develop forward. It started with a HUGE backslide for Edward, he sorta got back to the shaky S1 baseline but with way more baggage, then they backslid both of them again... and then the season finale is running across a beach to each other (rose-tinted fantasy style), kissing a few times, "I love you" -> "I know", and then retiring to turn a shack into an inn together.
There's nothing there in terms of, like, growth and progress on their respective issues. No time for it.
...why not?
It's not like S1 actually locked in what Kraken arc needed to be. I was genuinely shocked they went so hard on it for 3 whole episodes - pleasantly shocked, because I thought it was going somewhere interesting, but like. I did not think they would backslide that hard because they didn't have that many episodes and our guys already had a lot of issues to work through.
Like if you wanted a quasi-happy ending just in case maybe Edward didn't need to dig into the absolute darkest recesses of his soul and be haunted by the spectre of his suicidal intent that makes him self-sabotage his relationships for over 3/4 of the season. Maybe that was a bit too big of a lurch backwards to then correct for and sell us on enough growth that his relationship feels at all stable?
Making the season about backsliding and failing to talk about their traumas with each other was a choice, and it doesn't work very well with a happy ending beat here (vs S1 about first attempt at relationship + S2 about backsliding and lessons learned + S3 about genuine growth).
Just... why would you even try happy innkeeper ending and suicidal Kraken era in the same season??? You only had like 4 hours of screen time. And way more than two characters.
You didn't need to go that hard on Edward's whole thing if you didn't have the time to stick the landing. Or even stumble the landing but still get points for trying.
Like now that landing needs medical attention.

If Mary and Doug don’t accidentally book a vacation at Stede and Ed’s inn then what’s the point

After a proper night sleep and some conversations with my friend, I've come to the conclusion that the main reason why I felt so disappointed at the finale is the fact that we were not sure if season three is happening or not. If they actually tie all the loose ends in s3 and I watched everything as a whole then I prolly wouldn't be this annoyed.
That along with the episode count I blame only on MAX and no one else. So on my way to unsubscribe it 🙃 (I only started it at the beginning of Oct for ofmd anyway)
Lastly, for those who also think s2 finale wasn't written well and lots of compromises were made, plot holes covered, then I suggest watching imo one of the best written tv in history- Black Sails. It's not a comforting rom-com like ofmd but it's still one hell of a satisfying watch that hopefully will leave you in (good) tears.

I know they clearly set the 'avenging Izzy theme' for season 3. It's too obvious with the grave right next to the inn, Ricky still being alive, and *cough* the ship's name (the revenge) *cough*
But it doesn't mean you get to leave so many things ambiguous and in such odd places like this for season 2🙃
Gonna take a break now and only think about the good bits in this season...

Just to add onto my last post but not enough people are acknowledging how fucked up izzy apologizing to Ed is. And before I get into it I want you to know that I love the show and there are parts of s2 that were just amazing I mean I stayed up till midnight for every single one, I don't hate watch things. But we're here for discussing I'm here to talk it through with the crew ok? Anyway,
You're telling me that Ed cut off multiple of izzys toes till his leg started to rot, proceeded to shoot his leg off and then barely acknowledge or try to apologize after? I mean yeah Izzy shut him down usually when he was trying to talk but it doesn't take long to say I'm sorry it doesn't take long to write a letter even, it doesn't take much to apologize to the dying man. But instead izzy lays there and apologizes to Ed! For what? For fueling blackbeard I guess. Which I understand because in the first season if they had this discussion it would've made 100% sense but really in season 2 it doesn't. Ed is the one pushing himself, abusing the crew and killing and killing and killing. Izzy is breaking down about it, he's trying to get Ed to talk to the crew, which, again, gets him shot! I'm in a haze right now so maybe I don't know his last words word for word but all I know is that they were all about Ed and how izzy somehow could think he wronged Ed after Ed wronged him time and time again. They were toxic to eachother on both sides but at the end of the day they wouldn't have been around eachother by the finale had Izzy lived. Izzy would be on the boat with the crew, hell he might've even been the captain. And Ed would've been with stede at the inn. And so again it really is just death for what feels like the sake of death. Just because they needed some kind of justification for a cute ending and instead of making one they threw izzy away. I understand it's HBO or Max's or whatevers fault, that's why I'm not blaming the writers. I cant imagine how much they must've limited this season, so again, fuck you HBO!

OFMD SPOILERS!!! S2 E08
Please someone explain to me how we ended up with Izzy taking more responsibilty for Eds actions than Ed ever has. Even his "I wanna go" feels like Izzy truly believes in his heart that he is what is holding Ed back from growth. That when he invetibally dies Ed will be happier because he will be free of the person pushing him into the Blackbeard box.
The only person this season who has fueled Eds bullshit is Ed. I truly cannot understand how Izzys death resolved anything but it was clearly an attempt to absolve Ed without any consequences.

And hol up. Did they just call Ed's wish of being a calming and gentle 'regular dude' invalid??? And with the line of "you should go do the one thing that you're good at in your life"??? THAT'S their destination for Ed's self discovery???
If they want us to believe that he has reconciled with his identify of 'blackbeard' or even found some kind of middle ground between darkness and peace, they really should've included that bc it just looks like he straight up went bk to his old self (that he genuinely hates) when he put on his leather so he could go save Stede's life.

Also I really wish they would include the part of Ed asking if Stede would like to run an inn with him. Because I honestly thought they seemed intrigued when Zheng invited them to team up. But then it abruptly cut to them settling down. It's not that I'm not happy for them. I just wish they could include more internal development from Stede's part in the last few episodes. I want to see him change his decision on becoming a proper pirate aside from just getting his ass whooped by Zheng.

Okay so is the dressing up as British soldiers part supposed to be parallel to the fake dead fuckery in season one? Cuz it's one hell of a shit plan this time. The uniform served no purpose but fan service cuz they got caught immediately and someone got killed off. Neither the ambush itself nor the running to their ship need those uniform 🤷
