Following along with @freifraufischer as she does gymnastics research, has made me wonder about several other gymnasts I’ve watched in the past, in a “where are they now?” kind of way. One of those is Vanessa Atler. 

I always enjoyed watching Vanessa. She was one of the most powerful tumblers that I’d ever watched, up to that point, and I felt sure she would be on the 2000 Olympic team.  

And then… she wasn’t. She competed badly at the 2000 Olympic Trials, and the selection committee didn’t choose her for the team in spite of her incredible physical talent. Looking back, I realize that her decline started before the Trials, but I think it was her mistakes there that sealed her Olympic fate. 

A quick Google search tells me that Vanessa is now a gymnastics coach in California. She’s married and has two kids, and I really hope she’s happy. 

During my search I found this article, which details how Vanessa and two other gymnasts were (in the author’s opinion) the victims of terrible timing. (And in one instance, a horrific injury.)  Too young for the Olympics when they would have been at their peak, and too tired or injured by the time the next Olympics happened, to make the team. 

Sometimes, talent and hard work aren’t enough. You also need luck and good timing.

Seriously though, modern fandom, y’all need to remember that you can, like, ship multiple ships. 

Like I can ship two ships that are diametrically opposed, at the same time, because I like both ideas. You don’t have to choose one or the other. 

Like I can ship, for example, Sam/Frodo, and also Sam/Rosie, both AT THE SAME TIME. I don’t have to pick ONE couple and denounce all others, and tell everyone else that their ships are WRONG and BAD and mine is the only TRUE AND CORRECT ship.

I know it’s been a minute, school kind of has me in a strangle hold, but here’s some more little merman shouto/ little mermaid redraws! to hopefully TIDE you guys over till I get more time for myself. Sometimes genderbends are about how gender and sex influences experience and identity, serving as the basis of an AU where it is the major factor that changes and butterflies outward.

Sometimes it is for exploring the relationship between gender and sex, the disorientation when the body is suddenly changed on you for good or ill.

Sometimes it is about making characters empathize with those who have different bodies and experiences than them on the basis of sex.

Sometimes it's humour, the inherent absurdity of a spell or accident making a guy a girl or a girl a guy and everyone reacting to it being gender is fucking weird and everyone is so sensitive about it.

Sometimes it's for the hot and sexy.

Sometimes it's for exploring major themes of gender and personal experience, or even gender and other aspects like race and sexuality and often expands upon the text's original themes.

Sometimes it's because you want a character to become a thinly-veiled SI or vehicle for wish-fulfillment but your gender doesn't match up so you change it.

Maybe you are trans and it's wish fulfillment. Maybe you are trans and it is an exploration of your identity. Maybe you are cis but also have gender stuff going on and are fucking around with it. Maybe you are cis with no gender stuff going on but gender is just a fun concept to play with.

Sometimes you think there just needs to be more characters of X gender (usually girls, but other genders as well) but don't want to make OCs so you use your gender ray on everyone.

Sometimes it's for shipping purposes, when you like the characters dynamic but prefer f/f or m/m or f/m.

Sometimes you like describing and designing dresses but feel uncomfortable dressing the mostly-male cast in them. Sometimes you want to make a bunch of gender-related jokes. Sometimes there's old concept art where the gender was different and you think it's cool. Sometimes you just think X gender has more room for cool character designs and arcs. Sometimes it's a crackfic. Maybe canon set a precedent for it and you want to take it expand on that. Maybe it's world-building. Maybe it's character building.

Often, it's a combination with some unique-to-the-author reasons as well. The possibilities are infinite. Especially since gender is just such a big part of our lives. Even men, the "unmarked" default tend to have lots of feelings about gender.
