I need to put my thoughts in order before I can post something coherent about Haikyū ending but just for now I need to say this. Pro volleyball player my ass, Yaku has clearly joined the Russian mafia

If I never read the last chapter Haikyū will never end right. I am not emotionally prepared for it to end.

Every game played in Haikyū is unique and offers something new to the reader. While readying the MSBY vs Alders game there’s been something about it that really sets it apart from all the other games we’ve read leading up to this point. I’ve realised what that is over the last couple of chapters and that’s that it’s extreamly cathartic to read. We’re watching characters that we love, that we’ve seen struggle and grow to get to where they are and we’re now having all that laid bare for us to witness in the most exciting way possible. God I love this manga.

I bet Tendo himself set that as his caller image in Ushijima’s phone.

I really don’t mind a long reply, your reply was interesting and I’m definitely going to check out Angela Duckworth talk (I love a TED talk). I definitely don’t disagree with you, there is so much more to Haikyuu than just winning and losing.
I suppose what I was trying to say was, in a sense if winning is the destination then the training, friendships formed, obstacles faced, and even losing are the journey. Take the saying, it’s not about the destination it’s about the journey, which I think applies to many pieces of fiction, but without a destination there may have never been a journey. Which is what I was trying to say, not that winning is the most important part of Haikyuu but that it does matter. It’s where much of the series momentum comes from because it’s what drives our characters forward.
The final tweet I saw that lead me to writing the post went along the lines of “well Furudate never made the story about winning anyway” (I am paraphrasing, I can’t fully remember the tweet and I can’t refind it. ) and I just didn’t agree with this sentiment. I could say agree had the sentiment been that the outcome of nationals didn’t matter, but it was the implication that winning didn’t matter at all. I’m not saying this persons or any other persons opinion on this matter is wrong or misinformed, I wholly agree that people read and interpret fiction in many different ways. I think that’s what I really love about Haikyuu, there’s so much to read into and unpack about what is essentially Furudate’s love letter to volleyball.
Anyway thank you for your reply. I really do appreciate it.
So I’ve seen a few posts on twitter where people have stated that winning is not really important in Haikyuu, which is why a team unknown to us readers won nationals. But I don’t really agree with this sentiment. I think winning is incredibly important to the plot of Haikyuu which is why there’s such an emphasise on losing, you cannot have one without the other.
I’ve said it before but no other match ending hits as hard for me as the second Aoba Johsei match. As elated as I was for Karasuno’s win I was equally as heartbroken at Aoba Johsei’s loss. Without the emphasis on how important winning isto both teams here, this climax would not have been so powerful.
But after all the entire driving force of the story is Hinata’s want to beat Kageyama as his equal, to face him on a court and end the victor. That has always been the driving momentum of Haikyuu, and Hinata’s time at Karasuno and in Brazil were paths taken on his journey to be on the stage he’s playing on now. Both Hinata and Kageyama are not willing to lose to one another and are both giving it every thing they’ve got.
So don’t tell me that Haikyuu is not about winning because I simply don’t see it. Losing is absolutely an important aspect of the series and without losing our characters wouldn’t grow, wouldn’t get stronger. But it’s the hunger to win that keeps them fighting.
