When we first did Maul in The Clone Wars, Dave and I were so worried about this that we had talks 3 months before we recorded anything. And we talked about the whole arc of Maul. […] So I assumed we were gonna have some sort of similar process on Rebels. Not so. […] So finally the day of, and I have so many questions, and at this point I was like “Ok, well listen, man. People are gonna know it’s Maul going in because there’s gonna be a commercial that says “DARTH MAUL”, but I’m gonna disguise his voice anyway. And I’m gonna make him really old and decrepit.” And I was thinking maybe his voice could get stronger as the episode goes on, almost like he’s siphoning off the youth of Ezra. Like gaining strength. […] There was this whole thing where we talked about could his voice be different and could we lead him into the character that we know from Clone Wars later. Like he’s gaining strength. And what was one of the most fun things to see was when I went to Lucasfilm and saw some early animated stuff, that the animators, and Joel Aron, and the lighting team, and everyone was banning behind this idea of gaining strength.
