MORE mixed media tests on toned paper- ink/marker and colored pencil. Technique-wise, these are a goddamn mess, but diving back into little scenes like this has been such a good start to the year. I think I’m going to hop back to watercolor paper, though.
Both of these are a product of staring at Parrish art for a bit too long

people denounce traditions and rituals like 'prayer is just repeating words' or 'why would I rest on Sunday I have stuff to do' or 'going to church once a week is just mindless'
and then they say 'here's a great morning routine! repeat these affirmations every day! practice gratitude every night before bed! 5 ways to build community! Sunday reset checklist!'
my sister in Christ you're reinventing the wheel. we've been doing all that for centuries.

Matka Boska Gromniczna (Our Lady of Thunder) by Piotr Stachiewicz (1911-1912)
In rural Poland it was believed that during the winter the Blessed Virgin protects people and wolves from each other.
On February 2nd Catholics celebrate the Presentation of Jesus Christ in the Temple - the day when Simeon heralded Christ as "a light for revelation to the Gentiles". As the Light enters the Temple, Catholics bless candles that bring light into darkness. The Christmas season is over.
My grandma used to light her blessed candle (gromnica) during storms and pray, asking the Blessed Virgin for intercession, for her house to be saved from lightning.
People say that on the day of Presentation/Candlemas/Matki Boskiej Gromnicznej the Blessed Virgin wakes up the first lark and we start our journey towards spring.

We are afraid of religion because it interprets rather than just observes. Religion does not confirm that there are hungry people in the world; it interprets the hungry to be our brethren whom we have allowed to starve.
