She laughed softly, shaking her head, but soon affected a somewhat puzzled look, complete with a feigned pout. “Oh, you were? Does that mean we have to be enemies now? Fight to the death? I must warn you, I’m stronger than I look.” All teasing aside though, with another little laugh, she gestured to the bottles now in her basket. “Please. Take the red. I’ll go with my second choice. It makes no difference to me.”
Hadn’t she seen him somewhere before? Mara took a second to really study his face, freeing her right hand to take his in a firm handshake. A doctor, huh? “Mara Foster. …Didn’t I see you a little bit ago, salivating over pastries and cakes, or was that some other tall, good-looking fellow?”
He laughs softly. “To the death? Surely not. No, you clearly spotted it first, and how ungentlemanly would it be if I offered to help you only to take the very thing I helped you reach.” But he looks unsure at her next words. “Are you sure? I’m more of a whiskey drinker myself, and I’ve already got that.” He gestures to his basket.
Her compliment makes his smile brighten. “That I couldn’t say, but I was very excited to find these guava pastries, they are harder to find than the usual cherry or apple.” He points absently to his basket again. “I must admit to noticing the gorgeous redhead. I suppose you have a sweet tooth as well?” He gives her a crooked grin.

“For you to not go on that trip. I have a bad feeling about it” Ruby admits, avoiding his gaze, feeling guilty for even asking him not to go on a trip that was a once in a life time kind of opportunity.
Malcolm sighs wishing he never told her the truth about the park. He sits down next to her and meets her gaze steadily as he speaks. “You’re right. It is dangerous, very dangerous. But I’m the only expert going who is against this. If I don’t go then they will open it up to the public. People will be lead to believe it’s safe, when it never can be.” He takes one of her hands in his, his eyes now pleading for her to understand.

When he admitted not knowing if he wanted to live forever, Elle couldn’t hide the way the sides of her lips fell. A full frown was prevented though as she closed her eyes to concentrate, trying not to think about the past and how she probably couldn’t handle going through that heartache again. Mouth opened to speak, but she didn’t have the fancy words to explain what she wanted to say. Feelings didn’t overwrite facts, when it came down to it, and all she could offer was feelings on why she wanted this. It wasn’t a perfected plan anyway, as research would be needed to turn the blood into a permanent anti-aging solution.
Wide blue eyes followed the syringe as he took it to place on his desk. “But…” Giving up for the moment, she allowed herself to get comfortable in his arms. “No, I’m not sick… But, we are dying. Like right this instant, dying is occurring.” In her nervousness, sentences weren’t coming out the way she wanted them to, it seemed. “I was reminded of it today, a news show had a special on those who recently passed away. And it… it showed some actors I recognized from the movies and sitcoms daddy used to make me watch. They’re gone now. All that’s left are the shows they were in. It really got me to thinking.” A sigh left her lips as eyes caught his. “I don’t want that to happen to us. I can’t lose another person in my life again. I can’t lose you.”
Her disappointment was palpable. He couldn’t remember ever seeing her like this. What was worse, he could tell she was holding back the full force of it. His heart ached to know how to help her. To make her smile again. But he couldn’t just say something silly or trite. She had gotten the courage to talk to him about something important to her and he wouldn’t miss the opportunity to be there for her.
“I’m not saying no. If this is important to you then it’s important to me. But this is something we have to think through and talk about, we can’t just do. Or, I can’t just do. You’ve got to remember this is the first I’m hearing about this. I mean, yes, you told me about your friend, but I didn’t even know you had some of her blood. Has there been any research on this? It’s one thing to give an actively dying person this to save their life. But we are healthy.” He moves her hair over one shoulder and runs a comforting hand down her back. “I know I’m getting older. I can’t imagine how scary that must be for you. But I just had a physical a few months ago. And you’ve made sure I eat better. I exercise more now than ever before. There is time to figure this out, and we will do it together.”
