some things i like
i like when you make someone laugh when they’re drinking something and they try so hard not to spit their drink out. i like seeing someone’s favorite song come on the radio and watching them get so excited. i like when people tell me that something reminded them of me. i like when it’s cold outside and parents hold their hot drinks so cute. i like when you’re at a beach and people see how far they can run into the water without falling. i like when people try not to say bad words especially when kids are around, and so they yell random words instead. i like when people buy new clothes and they want to show you. i like when people snort when they laugh and they cover their face embarrassed. i like watching people try to park perfectly. i like when you find out a mind-blowing fact and then you tell someone else and it blows their mind. i like when people slow down to let an animal cross the road. i like when someone tells you to look because their pet is being super cute, even though the pet looks the same as it always does. i like when you see a family walking with little kids, and the little kids are basically running trying to keep up with their parents. i like getting my foot size measured when i go to get new shoes. i like how when people get out of the car after a long car ride they do that full body stretch. i like watching kids get all excited to meet santa. i like getting a dry sponge wet. i like speeding up to get on the highway, i feel like i’m taking off in a plane. i like the faces babies make when they try lemons. i like seeing pictures of people trying to photograph a mirror. i like seeing people do things by themselves. i like watching someone put stickers somewhere only to immediately decide they belong somewhere else. i like being stuck in traffic with people i love. i like when people tug my clothing to get my attention. i like when people try out word pronunciations out loud and have to stumble through it. i like when i see someone listening to a song or reading a book and mouthing the words to themselves. i like when someone’s listening to music and they offer you an earbud to listen with them. i like when people pick up facetime calls even when they’re about to do something. i like when people laugh at their own jokes. i like when people open up gifts they already own and they act surprised. i like the sound of tires on a gravel road. i like when two strangers find out they have something in common. i like when someone yawns and then a yawn chain starts. i like when people hold the door open for someone and they get stuck holding it for way more people and they don’t care. i like when people put their hood up and then tighten the strings when they’re embarrassed. i like when couples go ice skating and they’re holding hands and one starts to fall and the other person catches them or they both fall and start laughing. i like when people get all bundled up for winter and all you can see is their eyes. i like people look up to the sky when it’s snowing and close their eyes. i like when babies yawn or sneeze. i like when dogs uncontrollably sneeze and they have like ten sneezes in a row and they can’t figure out what’s going on. i like when people hit PRs in the gym and you can see the excitement on their face. i like when someone has the hiccups and another person waits a minute before trying to scare them to get them to go away even though it never works. i like when people purposely drive through puddles on the side of the road. i like when people play music and they close their eyes. i like watching kids jump in leaf piles. i like watching old couples walk together because they’re always so close together. i like watching when dogs have dreams. i like watching dogs do donuts in parking lots in the snow. i like when people get really excited to tell me something simple like their favorite shampoo is back in stock at the store. i like seeing parents go sledding with their kids. i like seeing babies get tickled. i like when people are in line at a grocery store or stores and they haven a bunch of things but they notice the person behind them only has a few and they let them go in front of them. i like when people don’t know how to wrap gifts but they try their hardest anyway. i like when sports teams jump around in a giant huddle to celebrate after a win of a big game. i like when people pull over to pick wildflowers. i like watching squirrels clean themselves. i like seeing a dog with its head out the car window and its tongue hanging out, flapping in the wind up and down all crazy.

If women are unsupervised, then what might they be doing? What might they be wearing? What could they become? What if, instead of being powerless and pliable, they learned that they could fight back? What if the woman who lies next to you at night, folds your laundry, cooks your meals, is merely hiding her claws and scales and razor-teeth and licking her lips with her forked tongue, counting the wrongs you committed against her – against all women – biding her time.

As opposed to that quote about “the horrifying ordeal of being known,” do y’all ever feel so positively UNKNOWN and UNSEEN that it frightens you? Like there’s a self that you feel on the inside, and you believe to be “you,” but it seems like nobody else sees that version of you? And they’re interacting with someone that isn’t you but a projection of their experience of you? What’s more, perhaps nobody will ever know your true essence and you will die without ever being fully realized????? I’m only two beers in honestly
